Here Today Gone Tomorrow

If you have seen the recently released movie "Ray" about Ray Charles' early years with Atlantic Records and ABC/Paramount, there is one scene in particular that really puts the time into perspective as to how recordings used to occur. In this scene they show Ray Charles (played by Jamie Foxx, who won an Oscar for his performance) in the studio recording his classic LP "Country & Western Hits," and the incredible song on that LP "Georgia On My Mind." During this recording session he is accompanied by an orchestra, the Rayettes, choir singers and his band, all of which were present in one studio and ready to cut the track when they said those magical words, "1, 2, 3." However, much of today's recording process is conducted in a less personal way.

An example of this is Rod Stewart's recent Grammy award winning effort for "Great Love Songs Sessions." On this record Rod Stewart never saw his duet artists or was even in the same studio with the band. Although technology can produce a great sound, there is a feeling that is missing, a chemistry between the musicians that comes through so true in the recordings of artists such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and more. Their recording sessions were live with up to 100 artists at a time playing together in one studio, playing off one another, creating the music together. It is simply a different listening experience, the sound is unmistakeable and truly gives the listener the feeling of being in the studio with the artist.

This newsletter Mymusicfix is featuring albums by artsts that recorded in this very way. Listed here are three of Ray Charles' ABC/Paramount DCC Masterpieces, which are extremely rare and limited edition pressings mastered using the original master recording session tapes, and several other masterpieces that were all recorded in live studio sessions.
