Top 100 Artists Of All Time. Everyone has an opinion about who are the real rock royalty are, but see what VHI's poll of musicians and Associated press concluded were the greatest of all time with mymusicfix's weekly newsletter.

#41 Nirvana

Nirvana is credited for bringing the sound and spirit of late 1970ís punk rock to the mainstream pop audience. The result of this hybrid of rock, punk and also classic rock, became known as the Seattle sound, or Grunge (something that bands such as Soundgarden and Pearl Jam also played huge parts in). But more so than those previously mentioned, Nirvana seemed to capture the frustration and rebelliousness of teen youth, a frustration that was widely felt across all levels of the music industry and fans world-wide alike when Cobain tragically took his own life at the young age of 27 in 1994. In the Top 100 Rock & Roll Albums of All Time, Nirvana was recognized at #2 with ìNevermind."

Queen can be traced back to 1967 when Brian May, one of the greatest guitarists of all-time, and Roger Taylor joined a band together called Smile. When their lead singer left for solo ambitions, and Freddie Mercury joined the ranks, a rock & roll giant was born. Their sound is something that cannot be copied, although numerous bands have tried. A cross between glam rock, heavy metal and vocal harmonies produced by multitracking Mercury's vocals. This sound took the world by storm with their break out album "A Night At The Opera."

#36 Al Green

To a greater extent than Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Al Green embodied both the sacred and profane in soul music. He was one of the most popular singers of the 70's selling over 20 million records and putting out countless hits. He began, as so many great soul singers, with ties to the church and even touring as a vocal-gospel quartet throughout the south with his brothers. It was here that he attributes his improvisational style, vocal moans and cries that became his trademark. He returned to church full time in the late 70's as a Baptist preacher, but he continued to record pop-gospel albums and has earned eight gospel Grammy's while doing so.
