Here's How it was done:
Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration.
And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music.
This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session.

Contemporary President Les Koenig, who rightly felt that Art had yet to record with musicians who were his equal, wanted to take advantage of Miles Davis' quintet being in L.A. But Pepper hadn't been playing for several months, and his horn was in a state of disrepair.
To minimize anxiety, the session was kept secret from Art until the last minute. But Pepper always rose to a challenge: he taped to his dried-out cork, arrived for the date, and proceeded to record an album widely considered the most important of his career. This is an all tube recording from the mircophones to the tape machine.

Art Pepper left a legacy of innumerable appearances on records, but his sessions for Contemporary always seemed to find him in the best company and in the best shape. Here his impassioned alto sax is appropriately applied to the compositions of six saxophonists, among them Benny Carter, Ornette Coleman, and Pepper himself. The presence of Jack Sheldon in a rare performance as a small-group trumpeter was another important factor in the album's success.

A bright spot for Webster was that when he worked, it was often with the splendid band in this album. In Jimmy Rowles, Jim Hall, Red Mitchell and Frank Butler, he had sympathetic and inspirational colleagues. This live recording captures their remarkable empathy. It includes nearly 30 minutes of previously unissued music.

Out of Print forever
Sunday at the Village Vanguard is one of the most important piano trio albums in history and a desert-island choice among many musicians. It marks the final appearance of bassist Scott LaFaro with Evans and drummer Paul Motian. LaFaro demonstrated a concept of jazz bass playing here that shattered traditional limits to how interactive and contrapuntal a bass line could be without totally abandoning its supportive function. He also soloed with unparalleled imagination and technical facility. The album also showed how Evans had refined an approach to solo improvisation in which the pulse was not as obvious as it had been in swing and bop approaches. And his extraordinarily-high standards required that each improvised melodic idea be extensively developed, resulting in more continuity and pacing than was common to any previous modern style. The influence of what LaFaro and Evans laid out here was still being felt in the 1990s.

This is the second of two Riverside albums made up of selections recorded by the classic Bill Evans/ Scott LaFaro/ Paul Motian trio at their legendary live recording session of June 15, 1961. Although originally issued a half-year later than Sunday at the Village Vanguard (now OJC 140), this was by no means an afterthought collection of lesser items. Evans and producer Orrin Keepnews had immediately recognized that there was more than enough material for two top-level records. The dozen chosen performances were subdivided to enable the first album released to feature LaFaro, who had died in an auto accident just ten days after recording. Thus this second collection can fairly be said to present a more typical overview of this remarkable unit at work.
