Recorded in Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971. This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet. A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history. Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another riff-driven rocker. Vocalist Ian Gillian, whose dramatic, soaring tenor set the mold for many heavy metal singers to follow, is in fine form here, as are the pyrotechnics of Blackmore and Lord. Everything from the title to the warped group photo on the album cover indicates that MACHINE HEAD will be an exercise in unabashed, brain-melting rock, and that is exactly what it delivers. It still stands in the pantheon of seminal hard rock records. Editorial reviews Included in Q's 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time. Q (07/01/2001) ...nothing but good, hard, socking music... After playing the 1973 Rainbow Concerts that were arranged by good friend Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton returned to Florida's Criteria Recording Studio to cut 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. Because of a stint of personal turmoil, Clapton had not played guitar for two years preceeding the Rainbow Concerts, but with the help of a core group of musicians including George Terry, former Derek & the Dominos bassist Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, and Yvonne Elliman, Slowhand put together an album that many consider to be his best. Focusing more on his singing than his guitar pyrotechnics of the past, the new, improved Clapton used a laid-back, J.J. Cale-type vocal style to great effect on a mellow version of "Willie And The Hand Jive" and Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out." Far from being a kinder, gentler guitar hero, Clapton also showed considerable spark on a slide-drenched "Motherless Children" and the driving "Mainline Florida," which closes out the album. Of course, his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" was the musical statement that took him to the top of the charts and let the general public know he was back. 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD is still one of the highest points of Clapton's solo career.

This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 sound system. By 1975, Eric Clapton was coming off the smash success of 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD. If his last album was a cathartic release after coming out of a battle with drug addiction, then THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD was the first record where Clapton could catch his breath. Having become enamored with reggae after riding Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" to the top of the charts around the world, E.C. chose to record in Kingston, Jamaica. Although recordings of Clapton with Peter Tosh first surfaced over a decade later on the CROSSROADS box set, Slowhand successfully dipped his toe into the reggae pool by way of the loping beat of "Don't Blame Me," along with an infectious take on "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." (He even managed to add an impressive Jamaican patois to his vocal style). Elsewhere, Clapton returned to the roots of American music via straight-forward gospel ("We've Been Told [Jesus Is Coming Soon])"and blues (Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying" and Mary McCready's "Singin' The Blues.") Clapton's bypassing of electric guitar for some vastly underrated dobro playing turned his self-penned "Pretty Blue Eyes" and "High" into gems often overlooked in his enormous canon.

"Jackson Browne, Running On Empty - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"

JACKSON BROWNE RUNNING ON EMPTY 5.1 CD + DVD SEALED - OVER 200 NEVER - BEFORE - SEEN TOUR PHOTO'S & 2 EXCLUSIVE VIDEO MONTAGES. INCLUDES 2 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS. Recorded onstage, backstage, in three different hotel rooms, and on a Continental Silver Eagle tour bus during a cross-country 1977 tour, Running on Empty is a paean to life on the road. Jackson Browne's sense of camaraderie extended to the road crew, if "The Load Out," a love song to his roadies, is to be believed. Browne is much more blithe here than in his earlier outings. But Empty also represents a fleeting lighthearted moment for the singer-cum-poet whose concerns became more political than personal after its appearance. Beneath its flippant surface, this disc is a look at the lengths Browne and his friends went to avoid facing the demands of the touring life. What with the frequent drug references, misogynistic references to on-the-fly pairings with women, and the sobering line in the title track--"I look around for the friends I used to pull me through / Looking into their eyes, I see them running, too"--one realizes that Browne was much more comfortable on the road than off. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 sound system. DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED is the Moody Blues' true contribution to rock history: the most cohesive integration of rock songs with orchestral music ever produced. Asked by Deram Records to create a rock reworking of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony, the Moodies instead wrote their own symphony, a song cycle that describes the emotions that accompany each part of the day, from dawn ("Dawn Is A Feeling") to night (the classic "Nights In White Satin"). The songs are connected by lush orchestral passages in which the basic musical themes are reworked. Meanwhile, the band had already begun to sound like its own orchestra, using signature Mellotron string sounds, flutes, tympani and multiple vocalists. Editorial reviews ...[The LP] made a prog signature of the Mellotron, a primitive tape-loop-triggering keyboard that tripsters still covet... Spin (01/01/2004)

The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge. Recorded at Tollington Park Studios, London, England. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 sound system. While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn't be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signs of strife. As usual, it's Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. John Lodge's aforementioned "I'm Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn't disturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the band was coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its more sophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved overall sound on SEVENTH SOJOURN. Editorial reviews ...their most satisfying music is also their most tactile, with a variety of rich and flowing textures....SEVENTH SOJOURN is music to bask in and feel with your pores as well as your ears... STEELY DAN GAUCHO DVD SURROUND SOUND CD - STILL FACTORY SEALED For those who thought it impossible, GAUCHO is the cherry on top of Aja. Each cut is a tasty little world unto itself; each compelling in its own flavor; each tied to the rest by its pungent reflection of the times in which we live. The guitar in particular, both rhythm and solo, are so pristine (we're able to hear picks across strings especially well on Glamour Profession and My Rival) and well conceived as to be fascinating. None but Donald Fagen's voice would fit so perfectly. Gaucho is Steely Dan at its zenith. Sublime! This is the pop CD I'd put in a time capsule as a gift to future listeners. Track Listings 1. Miller forsook his love of the blues for this and its sister project Book Of Dreams. In turning to mainstream pop/rock he became a huge star and developed the knack of delivering high-quality three-minute songs that were perfect for FM radio. The album is linked by Miller's fascination with electronic sounds, sandwiched between the irresistible title track, the Bonnie and Clyde tale of 'Take The Money And Run', the irritatingly simple 'Rock 'n' Me' and the subdued 'The Window', with its quirky lyric 'ask my baby what she wants to be, she says a monkey in a tree'. His baby replies 'there's nothing greater than love', true enough. After all, it was Miller who rhymed 'northern California' with 'girls are warm yeah'.

This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 sound system. EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE: THE CLASSICS is an updated version of the 1986 collection EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE: THE SINGLES. The only differences in this collection are the addition of the "New Classic Rock Mix" of "Message In A Bottle," different artwork and a slightly reworded title. Cosmetic changes aside, this remains a solid representation of a unique pop trio whose studio output was a too-short five albums. Although frontman/bassist Sting wrote practically all the material, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland's contributions leave no doubt that this was a three-man effort. "Walking On The Moon" features Summers' reggae shadings and Copeland's precise percussive nuances, and their instrumental prowess turns a nonsensical title such as "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" into a quirky pop nugget. As for Sting's songwriting, most of it revolved around relationships and the different turns they take. Phases such as rapture ("Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"), manipulation ("Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Every Breath You Take") and desperation ("Can't Stand Losing You") are all deftly touched on by Gordon Sumner.

This 1989 release captures Don Henley at his best, and boasts well-crafted songs elevated by stunning poetic images and reflective narratives. In fact, few pop artists know how to illuminate the human condition with quite the same amount of insight and ethos as Henley. "The Last Worthless Evening" and "The Heart of the Matter" offer unique perspectives on love and romance, while other tracks seek even greater, more expansive, artistic truth. The melancholy title track creatively blends together political denunciations (allusions to Ronald Reagan) with personal reckonings of lost virtue. In addition, jazz legend Wayne Shorter's soaring soprano sax solo on the bridge adds an emotional climax that's truly extraordinary. Another single from the record, "New York Minute" tells a tale of suicidal desperation, but ends with a kind of crippled hope; this song finds resiliency in faith and understanding in defeat. THE END OF THE INNOCENCE stands as an important pop record because of its lyrical brilliance, and its ability to speak so intimately to its listeners. Editorial Reviews Q 4 Stars - Excellent
