"Thelonious Monk Trio"

10 Inch LP Monk came to Prestige from Blue Note where he recorded with several groups of varying sizes including some trios. At Prestige, his first two dates (October and December 1952) were strictly in a trio context with Art Blakey on the first and Max Roach on the second. Two other selections, with Blakey, come from a 1954 trio session. This album contains the debut recordings of "Little Rootie Tootie," "Bemsha Swing" and "Blue Monk." These Prestige 10-inch LPs were pressed several years ago in the U.S. for a custom order to Japan. The remaining stock is extremely limited and therefore highly collectable. The covers match the original graphics. There are no bar codes or legal lines. Get 'em while they last. These are rare, one-time-only issues. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. Little Rootie Tootie 2. Sweet and Lovely 3. Bye-Ya 4. Monk's Dream 5. Trinkle Tinkle 6. These Foolish Things 7. Bemesha Swing 8. Reflections

"Thelonious Monk w Sonny Rollins, Brilliant Corners"

THELONIOUS MONK WITH SONNY ROLLINS - BRILLIANT CORNERS - FACTORY SEALED LP - Out of Print This is a potpourri of Monk, with Rollins in on two of the recording dates. The 1953 session with Julius Watkins on French horn gives us "Friday the 13th," an elongated outing on one of those Monkian harmonic sequences that is at once minimal and liberating. "Work" and "Nutty" were to become two of Monk's most intriguing pieces. These trio versions, with the steady Percy Heath as the pivot, reveal once again the rapport enjoyed by Monk and Art Blakey. "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want to Be Happy" are companion tracks to the ballad performance of "More Than You Know" [Sonny Rollins/Moving Out. These renditions have a relaxed, swinging informality that lets you think you are eavesdropping at a session in Monk's West 63rd Street living room in 1954 on a night Sonny dropped in to blow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. Friday the 13th 2. Work 3. Nutty 4. The Way You Look Tonight 5. I Want to Be Happy

THELONIOUS MONK with John Coltrane - CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT With Coleman Hawkins, Ray Copeland/Trumpet - Gig Gryce/Alto Sax - Wilbur Ware/Bass - Art Blakey/Drums - Shadow Wilson/Drums. When Monk and Coltrane spent six months (beginning in the summer of 1957) working together at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it was an historic event which certainly should have been exhaustively recorded. But nonmusical conflicts made that impossible, leaving as the only permanent reminders of the momentous encounter the three remarkable quartet selections that highlight this album. Classic Analog LP Pressing. THELONIOUS MONK – MONK BIG BAND AND QUARTET - IN CONCERT – Limited Edition – OUT OF PRINT PRESSING. BIG BAND MONK IN CONCERT - This is one of pianist-composer Thelonious Monk's greatest recordings and represents a high point in his career. "Thelonious Monk, 5 By Monk By 5 - CURRENTLY SOLD OUT"

This is one of Monk's most underrated albums. There are only FIVE songs on it, but they are all fantastic from the bright horns of 'Jackie-Ing' to the classic 'Straight, No Chaser' done great on this album, to the three fantastic versions of 'Played Twice' here played three times. The band was top class featuring the great Art Taylor on drums, a frequent Monk collaborator, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax and of course, Monk himself. The music is top notch jazz- fluid, hypnotic, beautiful. Track Listings 1. Jackie-Ing 2. Straight, No Chaser 3. Played Twice 4. I Mean You 5. Ask Me Now

"Thelonious Monk, Criss-Cross"

"Thelonious Monk, Criss-Cross"

Classic Analog LP Pressing. This second album of his from Columbia is one of his greatest. CRISS CROSS - Cut in a series of sessions from late 1962 through early 1963, this album features Monk backed by his longtime sideman Charlie Rouse on tenor and rhythm men Frank Dunlop on drums and John Ore on bass. The material is basically standard Monk. Heard hear are such Monk standards as "Hackensack", "Rhythm-A-Ning", and a superior Monk solo on "Crepuscule With Nellie". Overall the performances are exciting and energetic, the title track "Criss-Cross" stands out. This is fairly typical Monk from his Columbia years. He has long since established his personal style, but he still has a fresh imagination and produces fantastic performances throughout. Charlie Rouse is in top form as well. He was Monk's main hornman from the late 50's through most of the 60's. His extended stay within the realms of Monk's compositions and accompaniment pays off in a singular musical understanding between the two. He was such a part of Monk's group sound that a few of these tracks would sound odd with another hornman playing them. This is very nearly a great Monk album, and is recommended to all fans, or those new to his music. Track Listings 1. Hackensack 2. Tea for Two - Thelonious Monk, Caesar, Irving 3. Criss-Cross 4. Eronel 5. Rhythm-A-Ning 6. Don't Blame Me - Thelonious Monk, Fields, Dorothy 7. Think of One 8. Crepuscule With Nellie The tight-knit, driving group that includes Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums, is all woven together by the magic that is Thelonious' piano. The albums swings like mad from start to finish, a must!

"Thelonious Monk, In Action"

Among Thelonious Monk's brilliant musical associations, the one with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin sometimes gets overlooked. This 1958 recording catches the quartet with bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and drummer Roy Haynes on its home turf, New York's Five Spot Cafe. Griffin's gruffly compressed sound and high-speed, coiling lines are a fine foil for Monk's spare and pointed comping, bringing a distinct and special intensity to Monk's music. Together the group turns in classic renditions of familiar Monk tunes, including a brilliant Griffin performance of "Blue Monk." Track Listings Side One 1. Light Blue 2. Coming on the Hudson 3. Rhythm-A-Ning 4. Epistrophy (Theme) Side Two 1. Blue Monk 2. Evidence 3. Epistrophy (Theme)

"Thelonious Monk, Misterioso"

Thelonious Monk Misterioso - 140 Gram LP The most impresssive point to be made about his record is that it is a product of precisely the same night's work as the earlier Riverside album, Thelonious Action; the two are in all respects a matched set. On the evening of August 7, 1958, recording equipment was rather precariously set up in the always-overcrowed Five Spot, the room where Monk had made his triumphant recent return to the New York club scene and was now appearing with a new quartet featuring Johnny Griffin. This turned out to be the first successful live recording of Thelonious (he had rejected the results of a night's work here a month earlier), and the substantial number of Monk-approved performances were readily programmed onto two full and equally memorable albums. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. THELONIOUS MONK - PLAYS DUKE ELLINGTON FACTORY SEALED LP The very first 12-inch album in what was to be a most significant catalog also marked the Riverside debut of an artist of towering importance. "Thelonious Monk, Solo Monk"

When the great bandleader and jazz composer made this lovely, lightweight solo piano album in late 1964 and early 1965, he unexpectedly turned to standards more than to his own twisty, harmonically dense compositions (although there are a couple of those here, too, notably "Ruby, My Dear" and "Ask Me Now"). And not the usual jazz standards, either--more lounge-singer and Tin Pan Alley standards, like "These Foolish Things" and Bing Crosby's "I Surrender, Dear." In an unusually cheerful, relaxed mood, Monk plays with the sharp, tinkley attack, octave trills, and rock-solid left-hand rhythms of the New Orleans stride piano players he grew up listening to, but he takes advantage of the absence of a band to mess with tempo, too. Tracks include: 1. Dinah 2. I Surrender, Dear 3. Sweet and Lovely 4. North of the Sunset 5. Ruby, My Dear 6. I'm Confessin' (That I Love You) 7. I Hadn't Anyone Till You 8. "Thelonious Monk, The Unique - 140 Gram LP - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"

Monk's second album for Riverside continued the label's initial plan to broaden his audience by the use of recognizable standard tunes instead of his somewhat frightening originals. Thelonious' uncompromising performances, along with major league support (Art Blakey and Oscar Pettiford) and strong material, helped to turn this concept into lastingly superior jazz. Particularly notable are Monk's sharp thrusts of humor on such well-worn pieces as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Tea for Two." The album's impact was strengthened by one of the most unique covers ever devised. Riverside went so far as to print near-postage-sized Monk stamps, quite a few of which reportedly found their way through the actual mail. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. "Thelonious Monk, Underground"

Classic Analog LP Pressing. UNDERGROUND - Underground was recorded in 1967, about 20 years into the career of this wholly distinctive and unorthodox pianist-composer. Whenever the understated saxophone talents of Charlie Rouse accompany Thelonious Monk, one is assured of an invigorating set of music--and this collection is no exception. Supported by Larry Gales on bass and the inimitable Ben Riley on drums, Monk and Rouse elaborate on immortal compositions like "Ugly Beauty." On "In Walked Bud," the quartet is joined by vocalist Jon Hendricks. With jagged themes and unusual variations of meter and key, Underground showcases an aging Monk's still-brilliant eccentricity on the piano. A good bit looser than much of Monk's earlier work, he and Rouse infuse this date with their tag-team humor and unrelenting musical enthusiasm. Track Listings 1. Thelonious 2. Ugly Beauty 3. Classic Analog LP Pressing. Tina Brooks sound is unique: a bluesy, crying tone that is instantly recognizable. This release from 1960 contains top notch musicianship from a very young Freddie Hubbard, and the brilliant Duke Jordan, who is absolutely in tune with Brook's vision here. Sadly, although Brooks recorded four sessions for Blue Note, this was the only one released in his lifetime. After hearing this, you will want to pick up Jackie McLean's "Jackie's Bag" and Freddie Hubbard's "Open Sesame" -- both prominently feature Tina Brooks playing and compositions from around the same time as "True Blue". Tracks Include: "Good Old Soul" "Up Tight's Creek" "Theme for Doris" "True Blue" "Miss Hazel" "Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You" & "True Blue [Alternate Take]"
