"Weezer, Pinkerton"

WEEZER - PINKERTON LP - FACTORY SEALED. "From the pounding, primal assault of the opening track 'Tired of Sex,' it's clear from the outset that Pinkerton is a different record than the sunny, heavy guitar pop of Weezer's eponymous debut. The first noticeable difference is the darker, messier sound – the guitars rage and squeal, the beats are brutal and visceral, the vocals are mixed to the front, filled with overlapping, off-the-cuff backing vocals…it's the better album, full of crunching power pop with a surprisingly strong emotional undercurrent that becomes all the more resonant with each play." – All Music Guide -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. "Wes Montgomery & Milt Jackson, Bags Meets Wes - Last Copy"

WES MONTGOMERY & MILT JACKSON - BAGS MEETS WES - 140 Gram FACTORY SEALED LP - Out of Print LP Milt Jackson and Wes Montgomery were made to play together. Each had redefined the technical and expressive capacities of their respective instruments, displayed limitless melodic invention and rhythmic resourcefulness, and provided models of honest, unaffected soul. Their pairing occurred when Jackson joined Montgomery as a Riverside recording artist in 1961 and placed them amidst what amounted to the label’s house rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones. Included in the program of standards and originals is a classic line by each leader, Montgomery’s “Jingles” (one of three tracks also heard in alternate takes) and Jackson’s saucy blues “S.K.J.” The entire session is a model of relaxed, conversational blowing by five masters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. "Wes Montgomery, Guitar On The Go"

WES MONTGOMERY - GUITAR ON THE GO - FACTORY SEALED LP The chronologically last Riverside album from Wes Montgomery picks up, mostly, where "Portrait of Wes" left off: a final few rounds with his beloved guitar-organ-drums trio format. Now, there are two ways to take this set, aside from the cool flame that seeps from every note sounded by the master and his longtime organist Mel Rhyne: 1) Take it on its own, and don't hold it against a collapsing company, changing ownership and lifestyle, that they repeat-released a pair of blues jewels from Montgomery's own pen, the early (as in, 1959) "Missile Blues" and the latter-day "Fried Pies"; or, 2) bypass those two numbers and put the rest onto a single disc with the "Portrait of Wes" material, if you really want to be prickly about it. For me, I don't mind the repeat-released "Missile Blues" and (especially) "Fried Pies" (where Jimmy Cobb, the incandescent drummer with whom Montgomery would work again on the Half Note sessions with the Wynton Kelly Trio, joins Montgomery and Rhyne), if only because I had the habit of playing them repeatedly on their original album releases. Nor do I mind getting two takes of "The Way You Look Tonight," the shorter alternate take as lovely and lyrical as the nine-minute romantic monster that was issued originally. The "Unidentified Solo Guitar," not part of the original album, would be remade in due course (as "Mi Cosa," on "Bumpin'"), during Montgomery's Verve period, with a nicely arrayed string section, but taken here on its own it is just as embracing and would probably have been a perfect fit on the original release. The more you hear of them, the more you come to wish Wes Montgomery had been able to bring at least Mel Rhyne along to his Verve years; Rhyne is attuned to Montgomery's gently fiery style in ways that even the great Jimmy Smith (cutting two magnificent Verve albums with Montgomery) couldn't quite lock in. Montgomery and Rhyne play as though completing each other's statements and knowing what the other man thinks and feels before it's expressed, so seamless are both the shifts from one to the other soloist and the knit of one or the other's accompaniment. Regular drummer George Brown was as painterly a drummer as Montgomery ever worked with. You hear music like this and you're not in the least surprised that, whatever he did before or afterward, Wes Montgomery never felt as much at home as when working this trio format. And they make you feel right at home with them, even now. The Wes Montgomery Trio even in 2004 makes most of what has passed for jazz in their time and beyond sound somewhere between self-congratulatory and shiftless. It would be no disgrace if Fantasy, which controls the Riverside catalogue, should produce a box set composed strictly of the complete Wes Montgomery Trio recordings. This group, almost as much as its guitarist and leader, was a blessing upon jazz. TRACK LISTINGS 1. Way You Look Tonight 2. Dreamsville 3. Geno 4. Missile Blues 5. For All We Know 6. Fried Pies

"Wes Montgomery, Movin' Along"

Classic Analog LP European Pressing When this album was made, Wes Montgomery was in the early rocket-like stages of a tragically brief career. His debut as a recording artist on Riverside had not come until he was in his mid-thirties (and he was to die of a heart attack within a decade). In the single year between his first and this–his third–LP, he had leaped to the top of all possible polls. But he was always highly critical of his own recorded performances, and many feel his studio work never quite equaled his on-the-job accomplishments. However, this relaxed "blowing date" (his principal backing comes from a trio then working together as his friend Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section) is considered perhaps his most successfully swinging visit to a recording studio. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings Movin' Along Tune-Up (I Don't Stand A) Ghost of a Chance Sandu Body and Soul So Do It! "Wes Montgomery, Portrait Of Wes"

Factory Sealed Wes Montgomery's last sessions for Riverside late in 1963 marked a return to the organ trio format he always enjoyed. But the results had not yet been issued when the company ceased operations. This LP (now on CD), released during a brief attempt to resume, was assembled without any input from either the artist or his producer. Thus the issued version of "Moanin'" was not one Wes liked and several liner credit errors went uncorrected [for example, the actual composer of "Lolita" is Barry Harris and the tune "Movin' Along" is an entirely different blues also written by Montgomery and later titled "Blues Riff"]. Nonetheless these are strong earthy performances in an always hard to find album that was only fleetingly available when originally issued. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings Freddie the Freeloader Lolita Blues Riff Dangerous Yesterday's Child Moanin'

"Willie Dixon, I Am The Blues - CURRENTLY SOLD OUT"

WILLIE DIXON - I AM THE BLUES - Factory Sealed Well, Willie Dixon is definitely one of the most influential blues musicians ever; he is right up there with Robert Johnson and T-Bone Walker. Willie had written many tunes for Muddy Waters and others, and I AM THE BLUES is Dixon singing his own songs. He sings them damned well, and the blues are played perfectly. This is an awesome album to get into the blues, and it still holds true today. Standouts are "Back Door Man", "The Seventh Son", and "The Same Thing". . Songs like "I can't quit you, Baby" tug at the roots of blues tradition. Yet he wasn't tradition because he was such an originator; this album epitomized that fact. From Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, to the Rolling Stones, seems like everyone took something from Dixon. An essential entry for any so called blues-lovers collection. Highly recommended for blues fans

"Wynton Kelly, Kelly Blue"

WYNTON KELLY – KELLY BLUE - FACTORY SEALED LP Wynton Kelly’s recording career started in the late 1940s with Hal Singer, Babs Gonzales and Eddie Vinson. He went on to record with Dinah Washington, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, J.J. Johnson, Billie Holiday, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey and many other stars. Respected by his peers as a pianist of remarkable creativity and feeling, his own stardom was on hold until 1959, when he got a call from Miles Davis and joined one of the most important small bands in jazz. The same year, Kelly recorded Kelly Blue for Riverside. The album’s critical notices and popularity combined with his Davis exposure to bring Kelly general recognition. Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, his section mates from Davis’ group, round out the rhythm section. Nat Adderley, Benny Golson and Bobby Jaspar join for two memorable tracks. Throughout, Kelly cultivates the blues atmosphere that makes the collection one of his finest. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. "Yes, Big Generator"

YES BIG GENERATOR. This LP is your last chance to own the original pressing with all inserts included. Out of Print FACTORY SEALED Analog LP with small cutout hole on jacket but contains all the original LP picture sleeve and inserts. Big Generator might be the most underrated album in the Yes catalogue. It's by far their best album featuring Trevor Rabin. Tensions in the band were running high while recording this, and it shows through in the album's disparate musical styles. I will concede that it seems somewhat overproduced at first, but the end result is so great that it's not really an issue. "Rhythm of Love," one of the better Yes pop songs, kicks things off. It's kind of like a marriage of Eddie Van Halen's guitar and The Beach Boys' harmonies, which seems odd, but it works very well. "Love Will Find a Way" is one of the most notorious Yes songs for its line, "I eat at Chez Nous," and yeah, that does kind of tarnish the song. But it's inoffensive. The title track recalls "Owner of a Lonely Heart" a bit too much, but I still like it. "Final Eyes" is an emotional power ballad featuring some of Jon Anderson's best vocals ever. The rocker "Almost Like Love" and the gentle "Holy Lamb" are enjoyable, but neither are really noteworthy. The album's best song, and one of the best songs Yes have ever done, is "I'm Running." It's some of the most exciting seven-and-a-half minutes ever in rock music. The song moves through many moods, from light Latin to dark and heavy, and then in the climax, both. And the vocals. "I'm Running" has the greatest vocals of any Yes song, bar none. The harmonies in its last minute are awe-inspiring; I've never heard anything like it. The airy, dreamlike "Shoot High Aim Low" is Big Generator's second highlight. It's slower and simpler than "I'm Running" but still packs a punch. The interwoven and seemingly unrelated vocals of Trevor Rabin and Jon Anderson are great, as are Rabin's guitar solos (one acoustic, one electric). Big Generator is a great combination of some sleek pop tunes and a couple of weighty, intelligent masterpieces. No rock fan should be without it. Track Listings 1. Rhythm of Love 2. Big Generator 3. Shoot High Aim Low 4. Almost Like Love 5. Love Will Find a Way 6. Final Eyes 7. I'm Running 8. Holy Lamb (Song for Harmonic Convergence)

"Young Holt Trio, Wack Wack"

Classic Analog LP Pressing. This was the trio's debut 1967 release. When Eldee Young and Red Holt split from Ramsey Lewis, they wanted to capitalize on the association, thus pianist Don Walker's Lewis, whose piano figures so heavily in their sound was not titled in the band name. However, the split resulted in one hell of an amazing record, and they do some great covers too, including Lennon & McCartney's "Yesterday" which is given a bit more upbeat treatment than the original with Red Holt splashing the cymbals feverishly. Bobby Hebb's classic "Sunny" is also goosed with some righteous bopping. The Mamas & the Papas' classic "Monday Monday" by John Phillips is given a loose treatment with Walker's piano fleshing the melody. The title tune sounds a bit like Booker T & the MGs, but is a lot of fun with the guys shouting out "Wack Wack" as the piano bangs the note. The classic "Red Sails in the Sunset" is given an epic treatment. This set sounds remarkably fresh 36 years after it was recorded. This is one that jazz and rock fans will want to seek out! Enjoy!
