VOLUME 1 - Like a lot of second-wave funk bands, EARTH, WIND & FIRE were adept at balancing slickness and rawness. They achieved truly miraculous moments like the rocking “Shining Star” (which was their lone number one pop single) and the gloriously syncopated “September”. “Got To Get You Into My Life” -- is a unified cover of the Beatles’ hit and is one of the greatest Beatles covers from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
When it was originally released in 1978, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 was a succinct, ten-track collection of the group's best and biggest singles up to that point. There was one brand-new song, the excellent "September," which soon became a hit in its own right, plus the non-LP Beatles cover "Got to Get You Into My Life," which was recorded for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film, makes its first appearance on an EWF album here. EWF's commercial prime hadn't yet ended when this collection appeared; thus, it's missing several crucial latter-day hits, including the slinky funk of "Serpentine Fire," the ballad "After the Love Has Gone," and the disco smashes "Let's Groove" and "Boogie Wonderland." But even if it's an incomplete hits collection, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 still ranks as a strong encapsulation of EWF the funk innovators. The singles gathered here constitute some of the richest, most sophisticated music the funk movement ever produced; when the absolute cream of the group's catalog is heard in such a concentrated fashion, the effect is dazzling.

With his room-filling sound, unrelenting swing and imposing personality, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis was for more than 40 years one of the most admired tenor saxophonists. Equally dominant in a combo or soloing with the Count Basie band, Davis worked steadily and recorded frequently. Rarely was he more entertaining than in this collection of pieces oriented to the Afro-Cuban tradition. Backed by a powerhouse trumpet section and full Latin percussion, Jaws generates powerful swing on seven numbers including Chano Pozo and Gil Fuller's classic "Tin Tin Deo." The ebullient trumpeter Clark Terry shares solo space with Davis.

Although Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis played with Count Basie's band for two stretches in the 1950s, his own recordings in that decade were exclusively with his organ trios. But the passion of Davis' tenor saxophone took on even more authority and swagger in a big band setting, so in 1960 producer Esmond Edwards hired a bandful of New York's best players and engaged the practically unknown arranger Oliver Nelson to craft charts for Davis. The result was this powerful album. Among Nelson's three blues compositions is "The Stolen Moment," which later, with a slight title change, became his best-known piece, "Stolen Moments." In addition to some of Jaws' best playing and Nelson's rich arrangements, there is the excitement of all-out trumpet competition between Clark Terry and Richard Williams on "Whole Nelson" and "Jaws."

This album augments Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's working band--Shirley Scott on organ, George Duvivier on bass, Arthur Edgehill on drums--with a peerless array of tenor saxophonists. Coleman Hawkins's appearance here ups the ante considerably, given that all the other players--Davis, Arnett Cobb & Buddy Tate--are indelibly indebted to his pioneering work on the tenor. But Lester Young is another presence here, albeit a ghostly one: he'd died just a month earlier, & there's a splendid all-in version of "Lester Leaps In" which can't help but be a memorial to the great man.
The material here is uncomplicated: contrafacts on "Sweet Georgia Brown" & "I Got Rhythm", & a few different versions of the blues. But there's nothing slack about the playing: each saxophonist plays his part to the hilt, & one gets a fine sense of the different styles of the players, from the wonderfully grumpy & swaggering tone of Hawkins to the sheer elegance of Tate. This is an unpretentious, unfussy album which provides an evocative summing-up of the first generation of tenor saxophonists, even as the same label (Prestige) was busy releasing the work of a saxophonist, John Coltrane, who was already forging ahead way past it....

This Analog pressing sounds tremendous and shows that the Original Master Tapes are still in pristine condition! Without a doubt ELECTRIC FLAG was one of the most talented bands ever assembled in pop music. Mike Bloomfield’s statement that “Electric Flag is an American Band, American music -is not necessarily music directly from America.
I think of it the music you hear in the air, on the air, and in the streets -- Blues, Soul, Country, Rock, Religious, Traffic, Crowds, Street Noise and Field Sounds -- the sounds of people and silence.” The music here is extremely tight -- the horn section revolutionized rock music (aka Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago) and Bloomfield’s heartfelt playing is admired by the likes of Clapton, Mick Taylor and Peter Green.

Banjoist Elmer Snowden only led two albums in the LP era, and his OJC LP reissue is his best showcase. Snowden, who is joined by stride pianist Cliff Jackson, bassist Tommy Bryant and drummer Jimmy Crawford, is the lead voice throughout the dozen standards, all of which date from the 1920s or '30s. Snowden's dixieland banjo style is a lost art, and this is his definitive recording. Highly recomended joyous music.
