FACTORY SEALED -Turning away from the sweet pop of Out of Time, R.E.M. created a haunting, melancholy masterpiece with Automatic for the People. At its core, the album is a collection of folk songs about aging, death and loss, but the music has a grand, epic sweep provided by layers of lush strings, interweaving acoustic instruments and shimmering keyboards. Automatic for the People captures the group at a crossroads, as they moved from cult heroes to elder statesmen, and the album is a graceful transition into their new status. It is a reflective album, with frank discussions on mortality, but it is not a despairing record — "Nightswimming," "Everybody Hurts" and "Sweetness Follows" have a comforting melancholy, while "Find the River" provides a positive sense of closure. R.E.M. have never been as emotionally direct as they are on Automatic for the People, nor have they ever created music quite as rich and timeless, and while the record is not an easy listen, it is the most rewarding record in their oeuvre. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Herbie's last HEADHUNTERS-era disc that is still a fairly rewarding one for those open to his mid-'70's fusion of jazz with progressive funk/r&b. As with the previous few discs, Hancock and Maupin in particular get ample solo space, with Herbie still trying to integrate his talent for improvisation with his vision for genre-hopping. The music is a bit lighter in texture than the prior three albums in this style; nonetheless, check this CD out if you are into Herbie Hancock’s 1973-1976 period.

Underpinning this jumping, multi-rhythmic, fathoms-deep groove music is the percussive power that Herbie Hancock, on squawking, scratching, stuttering, pulsing electronic keyboards, and Paul Jackson on thrumming, wah-wahing bass, add to Mike Clark's straight-up, rock-solid, propulsive drumming. From there, any band member can swoop and dive in celebration of Hancock's vibrant compositions. Bennie Maupin brilliantly deploys several horns in spare, soulful, and otherworldly ways. But listen carefully, too, for the broad palette Hancock employs in lead roles. He augments the streak of Bill Evans melodicism evident in earlier, acoustic years with sustained funk fire and shuddering R&B drive.

When the earliest of these pieces were recorded in 1954, the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach had become one of Southern California's busiest clubs and a thriving center of West Coast jazz. A regiment of bright young musicians tired of life on the road had settled in the Los Angeles area, where it was possible for a lucky few to make a daytime living in the studios and satisfy their artistic needs by playing jazz. Howard Rumsey gathered some of the most talented of these young men as the Lighthouse All-Stars. Many of Rumsey's sidemen have survived as durable jazz stars, among them Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Conte Candoli and the late Frank Rosolino. Half of the charts in this collection are by Bill Holman, already established in the early 1950s as one of the finest jazz arrangers.

FACTORY SEALED LP
Howard Rumsey is a bassist, but he is best known as the leader of the popular 50s jazz group, The Lighthouse All-Stars. On "Oboe/Flute," also known as "Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Volume 4," the "All-Stars" play jazz originals and standards with the unique frontline of, you guessed it, oboe and flute. This disc is split between two sessions. One-third of the ALBUM (tracks 5, 6, 10 & 11) is from 9/25/56 and features Bob Cooper on oboe, Buddy Collette on flute, Sonny Clark on piano and Stan Levey on drums. The remaining eight selections are from an earlier two-day session in February 1954 with Cooper again on oboe (and on occasion English horn), Bud Shank on flute, Claude Williamson on piano and the great Max Roach on drums.
