"Queen, Greatest Hits Volume III "
GREATEST HITS VOLUME III - "Eurosealed"
Though at first glance a third Queen hits collection might seem to stretch the bounds of credibility, upon reflection this collection may well be the most revealing and compelling of the lot. Gathered from disparate late-career band and solo projects as well as Freddie Mercury tributes with guest vocalists filling the shoes of the band's late singer (Elton John dramatically on "The Show Must Go On," George Michael playfully over-the-top on "Somebody to Love"), it's a collection that coalesces into a thematically and musically satisfying whole. Though oft criticized for their unapologetic excesses, Queen's brash infusion of rock and blues with operatic drama and scale (deliciously exemplified here by "Barcelona," Mercury's duet with diva Montserrat Caballe) was unique. III isn't so much a collection of hits as a well-paced, lovingly compiled homage to Freddie Mercury and his distinctly arch artistic vision

"Queen, On Fire - Live At The Bowl - 3 LPS - Eurosealed - LAST COPY"
QUEEN ON FIRE - LIVE AT THE BOWL - "Eurosealed"
Recorded live at the MK Bowl on June 5, 1982. By 1982, Queen were at a peak in terms of touring and recording. They were coming off the back of two of their biggest selling singles - "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Under Pressure" - and by now they were playing more than 60 sell-out concerts a year in the biggest stadiums of the world. It is little wonder that by the time they reached the gig in June 1982 that the Queen touring machine was in prime condition. "We just stormed through that concert," says Roger Taylor. "I'd forgotten just how tight the band was by then." This is Queen at its electric best, with the band charging through 25 numbers drawn from the biggest hits and best-loved live songs.

"R.E.M., New Adventures in Hi-Fi"
R.E.M. NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI
After finishing last years's Monster tour with a huge quantity of newly written material, R.E.M. quickly began the task of transforming it into an album. The result is New Adventures In Hi-Fi, the most dramatic and wide-ranging musical statement the group has ever made. The 14 new songs here-running time more than 65 minutes-range from hushed acoustic to full-on electric, from studio recordings in Seattle to an acoustic jam in a Philadelphia bathroom. Both spontaneous-sounding and intensely focused, the album represents the band at the pinnacle of their creative powers. 2LP Set

R.E.M. UP - OUT OF PRINT
R.E.M. returns with Up, the much anticipated first recording by the band's now three-man lineup. Musically ambitious, melodically rich and filled with provocative new textures and sounds, Up marks the beginning of a bold new creative era for one of the world's finest bands. The album was recorded with producer Pat McCarthy (U2, Counting Crows, K.D.Lang, Hole), and features additional musical contributions from Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Tuatara) and Scott McCaughey (The Minus Five, Young Fresh Fellows) as well as Joey Waronker (Beck) and Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club).

"R.E.M.. Around The Sun (2 LPs)"
Classic Analog LP Pressing. R.E.M.’s first new studio album since 2001's gold Reveal is as emotional and uplifting as its "Leaving New York" single. With a renewed band dynamic and songs influenced by world events, this album surprises and satisfies and it is both political and poignant. Other standout tracks include the rapturous folk tune "I Wanted to Be Wrong" and the solidly intense "Boy In the Well." --just when everyone thought R.E.M. was down for the count-- "Around The Sun" is an unexpected bruiser of a comeback!

"Radiohead, OK Computer (2 LPs)"
Classic Analog LP Pressing, released in 1997, this album was voted as the #94 best album of all time. The album is a complicated and difficult record; an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details.

"Radiohead, Pablo Honey - CURRENTLY SOLD OUT"
The alternating bars of 12/8 and 11/8 that drive "Pablo Honey's" opening track, "You," should have given some indication to the masses that Radiohead would not be forever content to dwell in indie rock's lo-fi world. Though a solid debut effort, "Pablo Honey" gives little indication that Radiohead would go on to influence an entire generation of bands (Coldplay, Travis, Doves, Keane, et al).
PABLO HONEY is most famous for the hit single "Creep," a simple post-grunge pop song completely atypical of the Oxford quintet's style. In fact, the song was never originally intended for the album. As the story goes, Thom Yorke had written it years before and was strumming it in the studio, when a passing record exec heard it and insisted on including it on the record. The rest is history, as they say. Though "Creep" ranks among RadioHead's least distinctive songs, it did put them on the music world's map.
Beyond "Creep," only a few songs stand out: "You" with its driving odd meters; the heartfelt ballad "Thinking About You;" the energetic "Ripcord;" and the dynamic "Stop Whispering," which starts as a catchy pop tune but builds to a ferocious crescendo that foreshadows RadioHead's evolution towards more complex arrangements. "Pablo Honey's" performances and production values are solid and may disappoint those expecting the studio wizardry and technical virtuosity Radiohead would go on to achieve on "The Bends," "OK Computer," and "Kid A."
All in all, "Pablo Honey" is a decent record, far overrated by the indie mavens who disowned Radiohead after they went "art rock," and unlikely to satisfy those more familiar with their later, more progressive work. It's a worthwhile debut, but remains a curio in Radiohead's increasingly impressive and accomplished compositions.

"Radiohead, The Bends - CURRENTLY SOLD OUT"
RADIOHEAD - THE BENDS FACTORY SEALED LP - analog vinyl pressing
While RadioHead saw its stock rising in 1994, it wasn't until 1995's THE BENDS that it really became a blue chip band. And for good reason. The quintet honed its talent for bombastic Brit Rock, yet still preserved an edge of unpredictability. Even singles like the title track didn't give in to the kind of swooning guitar clichés usually embraced by commercial radio. If the LP proved anything, it was that RadioHead could find solid ground between pop experimentation and the tradition of born-in-the-bone, balls-out rock

"Rage Against The Machine, People Of The Sun"
10" Vinyl Pressing.
Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disenfranchised fans (and not insignificant derision from critics) for their bombastic, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash. Rage formed in Los Angeles in the early '90s out of the wreckage of a number of local groups: vocalist Zack de la Rocha (the son of Chicano political artist Beto) emerged from the bands Headstance, Farside, and Inside Out; guitarist Tom Morello (the nephew of Jomo Kenyatta, the first Kenyan president) originated in Lock Up; and drummer Brad Wilk played with future Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. Rounded out by bassist Tim Bob (aka Tim C., born Tim Commerford), a childhood friend of de la Rocha's, Rage debuted in 1992 with a self-released, self-titled 12-song cassette featuring the song "Bullet in the Head," which became a hit when reissued as a single later in the year.
The tape won the band a deal with Epic, and their leap to the majors did not go unnoticed by detractors, who questioned the revolutionary integrity of Rage Against the Machine's decision to align itself with the label's parent company, media behemoth Sony. Undeterred, the quartet emerged in late 1992 with their eponymous official debut, which scored the hits "Killing in the Name" and "Bombtrack." After touring with Lollapalooza and declaring their support of groups like FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting), Rock for Choice, and Refuse & Resist, Rage spent a reportedly tumultuous four years working on their follow-up; despite rumors of a breakup, they returned in 1996 with Evil Empire, which entered the U.S. album charts at number one and scored a hit single with "Bulls on Parade." During 1997, the group joined forces with hip-hop supergroup the Wu-Tang Clan for a summer tour and remained active in support of various leftist political causes, including a controversial 1999 benefit concert for death-row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Battle of Los Angeles followed later in 1999, also debuting at number one and going double platinum by the following summer. In early 2000, de la Rocha announced plans for a solo project, and the band performed an incendiary show outside the Democratic National Convention in August. The following month, bassist Commerford was arrested for disorderly conduct at MTV's Video Music Awards following his bizarre disruption of a Limp Bizkit acceptance speech, in which he climbed to the top of a 15-foot set piece and rocked back and forth.
Plans for a live album were announced shortly thereafter, but in October, de la Rocha abruptly announced his departure from the band, citing breakdowns in communication and group decision-making. Surprised but not angry, the remainder of Rage announced plans to continue with a new vocalist, while de la Rocha re-focused on his solo album, which was slated to include collaborations with acclaimed hip-hop artists including DJ Shadow and El-P of Company Flow. December 2000 saw the release of de la Rocha's final studio effort with the band, the Rick Rubin-produced Renegades; it featured nearly a dozen covers of hip-hop, rock, and punk artists like EPMD, Bruce Springsteen, Devo, the Rolling Stones, the MC5, and more. By 2001, Morello, Wilk, and Commerford had formed Audioslave with former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, and the group released an eponymous album by the end of 2002. With a de la Rocha solo album still not announced, Epic finally released the long-promised concert album Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium on CD and DVD in time for Christmas 2003.

"Ramsey Lewis Trio, Upendo Ni Pamoja"
RAMSEY LEWIS - UPENDO NI PAMOJA - Pianist Ramsey Lewis got his first taste of popularity as part of a Jazz trio he formed with Eldee Young and Red Holt and later crossed over to pop success with The In Crowd and Hang On Sloopy. Influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, Lewis perfected his own sophisticated style that is evident on tunes included here such as Got To Be There, People Make The World Go Round, and Put Your Hand In The Hand

"Randy Weston, Jazz A La Bohemia"
RANDY WESTON TRIO - JAZZ A LA BOHEMIA
Randy Weston, piano. Cecil Payne, bari sax (except tracks 3, 6). Ahmed Abdul-Malik, bass. Al Drears, drums. Weston's style at this point in his career is very similar to Monk's. Weston is more "in," though. Some of his high register use reminds me of Art Tatum. His solo rendition of "It's all right with me" is gorgeous: he does some very cool things with the harmony. Cecil Payne has a wonderful, smooth sound (think, "Paul Desmond on bari"). I really like his solos, especially on "Chessman's Delight," which is Weston's only composition on the album. Abdul-Malik plays solidly throughout, and his sound is big and warm. I can't comment on the drummer because he's not very present in the mix. Overall, great performances and solos by all. Lots of energy.

"Ray Bryant, Live At Montreaux 1977"
RAY BRYANT - LIVE AT MONTREAUX 1977
FACTORY SEALED LP
Without a doubt Ray Bryant showed up at the 1977 Montreux festival ready to play - and to dazzle. What truly amazes one on this date is how Ray can take fairly common material and make it absolutely his own. SATIN DOLL, for example; it's been played a thousand times but Ray has found a way to present it differently: he does it as a hard-driving, up-tempo, in-your-face swinger - and it's wonderful. So too with John Lewis's dirge-like DJANGO: Ray does it anything but dirge-like but rather as an up-tempo burner accented with a pounding left hand. That forceful left hand is also in evidence on Strayhorn's TAKE THE A TRAIN, with the bass part coming across like something Pete Johnson or Albert Ammons might play. Amazing! JUNGLE TOWN JUBILEE is a sprightly tune written by Lloyd Glenn, a fun-spirited R&B trumpeter from the 40's and 50's, and Ray seems to be having a ball with it. IF I COULD JUST MAKE IT TO HEAVEN reveals gospel elements along with a sound similar to Roger Kellaway playing his ALL IN THE FAMILY theme - a unique performance. Ray plays the ST. LOUIS BLUES at times as if it were a train piece and he was a barreling locomotive. If jazz is the "sound of surprise," this album is a superb example of the music. I think it one of Bryant's very best. Grab it WHILE you can.

"Ray Charles, Greatest Hits"
Ray Charles, Greatest Hits LP
Blind by age 7 and an orphan at 15, the gifted pianist and saxophonist spent his life shattering any notion of musical categories and defying easy definition. One of the first artists to record the “blasphemous idea of taking gospel songs and putting the devil’s words to them,” as legendary producer Jerry Wexler once said, Charles’ music spanned soul, rock ’n’ roll, R&B, country, jazz, big band and blues.
He put his stamp on it all with a deep, warm voice roughened by heartbreak from a hardscrabble childhood in the segregated South. Smiling and swaying behind the piano, grunts and moans peppering his songs, Charles’ appeal spanned generations.
Tracks on this album from the recording artist voted by VH-1 and Associated Press as the 12th Best Rock ‘n’ Roll Artist. Tracks on this album include the 43rd Best Song Of All-Time - What I’d Say - I Can’t Stop Loving You - Georgia On My Mind - Yesterday - Take these Chains From My Heart - Here We Go Again - Unchain My Heart - Eleanor Rigby - Ruby - Busted - Hit The Road Jack - Together Again - Born to Lose - Crying Time - I Got A Woman - Baby It’s Cold Outside - Makin’ Whoopee - Let’s Go Get Stoned - Makin’ Believe - Don’t Set Me Free

Red Garland once got the rap that he was a glorified cocktail lounge pianist. Believe me I would have been a regular at any cocktail lounge where he was playing! In truth Red Garland was a great jazz pianist period! Just check out how many of his recordings remain in print after all these years. That tells you a lot! Any of his LP'S are worth owning; my favorites include those featuring him in a trio setting with bassist Paul Chambers and drummers Art Taylor. Listen to any cut and you will be treated to consistently inventive swinging jazz. Maybe some folks took him for granted because he made it all sound so effortless. Don't take him for granted! Enjoy him
