Equally adept with rockabilly, plaintive ballads and drum-pounding rock, Roy Orbison stayed on the charts for thirty years from the very beginning of the rock era. His greatest legacy though, comes from his soaring, gut-wrenching musical melodramas. Other than Gene Pitney, only Roy Orbison was able to achieve this kind of incredible power and pathos flowing from his songs, examplified by "Only the Lonely", "In Dreams", "It's Over" and the incomparable "Crying". This early ALBUM release from Rhino brings together most of Orbison's biggest chart successes from his early years. With more than two dozen charted records to his credit, this can hardly be comprehensive but does offer a condensed cream-of-the-crop collection of hits plus some rare tracks. Orbison's vocals and the instrumental backrounds come through in startling clarity. The musical backround provided by way of the liner notes booklet follows the period of the recordings on the album. Of all the numerous Orbison Greatest-Hits anthologies available, this is the best and an excellent piece to build a more comprehensive Orbison collection.

MYSTERY GIRL - Tragedy of tragedies: Sun Records legend Roy Orbison passed away only a few YEARS AGO after issuing this sunny comeback in 1989. Rescued from the oldies also-ran circuit by his membership in the Traveling Wilburys--alongside fellow legends Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and ELO's Jeff Lynne--the Wayfaring One implemented these stellar pals and others on Mystery Girl and even allowed his son to compose some lyrics for him. Wonder of wonders: his angelic tenor rang true on every track and set the stage for what might've been a huge pop-culture renaissance. No need to fret about the "if only"s. One spin through the radio-chummy "You Got It," and the "Pretty Woman" legacy is crystal clear. We're lucky he was able to record it.

PROMISE is a jazzy blend of soul, R & B, and pop. The album starts off with a husky torch song - IS IT A CRIME?. This is true torch at its best, blazing up-beat parts mixed with smoldering, whispered vocal segments. SADE keeps the energy up with THE SWEETEST TABOO, one of only a few high-placing chart singles for the band. The sound of rain to open and close the track sets off Adu’s vocals on this song perfectly. Her take on the song JEZEBEL is very lyrically adept. NEVER AS GOOD AS IT GETS is as up-beat as SADE gets and the band lays down a pounding, memorable rhythm section complimenting the vocal stylings of Adu. PROMISE is Sade’s masterpiece where Adu’s vocal style reaches its full potential.

Se A Cabo, El Nicoya, and the memorable Oye Como Va gives us the quota of Latin Rock. The album’s star is the beautifully exotic Samba Pa Ti which features a superb guitar solo that oozes the sexuality blatantly depicted by the Mati cover. Other songs included are - Singing Winds, Crying Beasts - Incident at Neshabur - Mother’s Daughter - Hope You’re Feeling Better.

This was Santana’s debut LP and was a powerful and original masterpiece. When Santana arrived on the San Francisco scene in 1968, the Grateful Dead’s freeform antics were already legendary. But, Santana was a jam band of another order fueled by Latin rhythms, blues, bee bop, and straight ahead rock. Having set the audience at the 1969 Woodstock Festival on its collective ear, the band did the same for the nation with its self-titled debut released later than summer.
Songs such as Evil Ways - Jingo and Soul Sacrifice contain extraordinary ensemble playing powered by congas and timbales and topped by the gripping human cry of Carlos Santana’s guitar. A rock classic cover to cover!!

BRASIL ‘65 has universal appeal; these young artists have been acclaimed by concert crowds in Rome and Tokyo, and have captured the praise of discerning audiences at Shelly’s Manne Hole in Hollywood where Capitol executive producer David Cavanaugh first herd them and arranged for these exciting studio recording sessions. In Brazil, their music has created a concert demand matched only in the U.S. by several of the very top artists.
In a very subtle way, it’s a jazz sound, and in a very definite way, it’s a bright, happy, youthful sound contemporary sound that employs the new melodies and samba-like rhythms of Brazil’s finest young composers. It is reminiscent of some of the best bossa nova music heard in the U.S.
Sergio Mendes is the pianist and leader of the Trio. He is well-known in Brazil, not only as one of the foremost jazz pianists, but as a talented composer and arranger. He comes from Rio. His sidemen are bassist Sebastiao Neo, formerly a player with Jose Gilberto’s famed group, and a drummer who goes by the name of Chico Batero, or, in Brazilian, “drums”.
Wanda de Sah is the young singer and is literally the girl from Ipanema, a few miles from the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio. Originally, a guitar teacher, Wanda began her singing to her own accompaniments just to entertain friends. Today her admiring friends are numbered in the millions.
Rosinha de Valenca like her friend, Wanda, is just out of her teens. And, yet, she is possibly the finest woman guitarist in all the world, and certainly one of the most popular musicians in Brazil. Her virtuosity becomes all the more spellbinding when one considers that she is completely self-taught.
