"Shelly Manne & His Men, More Swingin' Sounds"
Factory Sealed Classic Analog LP Pressing.
The 1956 edition of Shelly Manne's Men is heard in an all-originals program: Charlie Parker's swinging "Rhythm"-based "Moose the Mooche" (including Bird's chorus from his Dial recording); Johnny Mandel's "Tommyhawk," a volatile minor-key swinger; and two from within the band's ranks, Russ Freeman's tender, brooding "The Wind," and Charlie Mariano's deep-dish, nine-minute "Pint of Blues." The piece de resistance is the 15-minute suite in four parts, "Quartet," by Bill Holman. The composer explains that while it "corresponds broadly to the four movements of the classical sonata form," it has not been used "because it is a classical form but because it has proven itself, though centuries of use, capable of supporting (as framework) a composition of this length."

Shelly Manne and his friends -- bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the once and future classical pianist Andre Previn -- had recorded a trio album before this one (Shelly Manne and Friends), but My Fair Lady was the first and biggest-selling of the jazz versions of Broadway shows, TV themes,and film soundtracks later recorded by trio. Although the friends made memorable interpretations of "Lil Abner", "Pal Joey", "Gigi", "Bells are Ringing" and "West Side Story", their "My Fair Lady" remains a true classic to this day.

Coming as it did on the heels of the There's a Riot Goin' On, 1973's Fresh surprised a lot of Sly fans by actually living up to its name. The weariness and paranoia of Riot are totally missing in action, replaced by a relaxed optimism that seems to shine from every note of tracks like "If You Want Me to Stay" and "In Time." The band--newly buttressed by the rhythm section of Rusty Allen and Andy Newmark--plays it loose and funky, and Sly's oddball sense of humor resurfaces on a cover of Doris Day's "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)."

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE - LIFE - 140 Gram Limited Edition classic LP high-definition Virgin Vinyl pressing for superior fidelity.
First, let me say that this recording is non-stop fun and brilliance. Life is Sly at his best. It's one of his most consistent releases and my personal favorite. Now, on to setting the "record" straight. Amazon's mis-informed editorial reviewer erroneously puts Life's release BEFORE The Family Stone's breakthrough album, Dance To The Music. Anyone experiencing the original vinyl issues of Sly's discography as they happened remembers the chronology: A Whole New Thing (1967); Dance To The Music (Spring/Summer 1968); Life (Fall/Winter 1968).
The title track from DTTM hit the singles charts in Summer 1968. Life was the superior sounding follow-up LP that offered funk rock and pop at its finest (M'Lady, Into My Own Thing, Fun, I'm An Animal, etc.). Jane Is A Groupee is arguably one of the most explosive cuts that Sly ever tracked. Life's title song was released as the first single from the record, but failed to follow DTTM up the charts. The group would later return with hit singles like Everyday People, Hot Fun In The Summertime, Everybody Is A Star and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).

A Blue Note catalog mainstay from its debut in 1958, this was another early 12 inch originally released as mono only. Now transferred from the first-generation two-track stereo masters, the quintet sound is wide-open and spacious. The phrase all star does not begin to describe this recording collective. Complementing Clark's piano are Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean handling alto, and a rhythm section consisting of Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones behind the drums.
