"Albert King, Live Wire / Blues Power" - Product Image

"Albert King, Live Wire / Blues Power"

ALBERT KING - LIVE WIRE/BLUES POWER Well the Blues is meant to be played live. It was never a genre for three minute radio songs. When Albert king signed at Stax he produced several hit singles beginning with "Laundromat Blues" and going on from there. This was his first live album- ever. He produced three recordings from it, this one and "Wednesday and Thursday Night in San Francisco". The latter two were not released until 1990 when the Stax label was ressurrected under the Fantasy organization. Albert plays a host of new material and reworkings for this LP. It was his first outing at the Fillmore where he was the headliner. He woos the young audience and introduces them to what the blues is all about. He opens the set with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", a tune he used for about a dozen years after this as his opening with his line "take off your shoes and slip them under the seat". He goes into the title track "Blues Power" from here. This a Talking Blues, a type that Albert excelled at. B.B. and Freddie never did any talking blues, Albert loved to talk! It is interesting that this type of blues originated in Appallacia with white players in the 1920s. Albert is the all time virtuoso of the talking blues witness "Matchbox", "Cold Feet" and others. This ten minute outing contains a comprehensive overview of his guitar style. It is very excellent and the tone of his guitar is fabulous. It of course has his signature stop break he first recorded at Chess in 1961 with "Won't Be Hangin Round". SRV used it in Texas Flood (Live)! This song has a lot of jargon that places Albert as an older player with a young audience, such as "Soda Fountain" and "Guys and Gals"..however, it's over their heads, they were into his guitar. The title "Blues Power" is of course the catch phrase of the sixties various "Powers" (Austen Powers!!) and like "Born Under A Bad Sign" (Age of Aquarius!!)these attempts at contemporizing the blues were lost in the fabulous guitar work outs. No one cared about the lyrics or content only the sound. Albert does a reworking of his first minor hit with King Records "Blues At Sunrise" with a small amount of Hendrix type feedback (he'd been doing this for a long time) and it's a great slow blues offering. He also does the closest thing to a slide riff he'd ever done with B.B. King's "Please Love Me". "Night Stomp" is an interesting reversal of the famous 9th chord runs he did in Overall Junction. He wrote this tune with the album's producer Al Jackson, Jr, the famous drummer of the MG's. He also wrote "Cold Feet" the talking blues, with Albert! The album closes with "Look Out" which was of course "Overall Junction" redone. This is interesting with the strange almost Buddy Guy bends he produced- it's different from anything he ever recorded. This is a classic recording. It was at a time when the blues revival of the sixties was waning and Jimi Hendrix (who played with Albert) had taken the blues to a new level of blues-rock. Albert became accepted as an innovator of modern urban blues with his soulful recordings for Stax records. However, live he always played traditional blues and often his set included tunes from the 1940s. Track Listings 1. Watermelon Man 2. Blues Power 3. Night Stomp 4. Blues at Sunrise 5. Please Love Me 6. Look Out

"Albert King, The Lost Session - GERMAN PRESSED MPS-8534- OUT OF PRINT RARE SEALED LP - LAST COPY"

ALBERT KING - THE LOST SESSION - GERMAN PRESSED MPS-8534 OUT OF PRINT RARE SEALED LP - LAST COPY FOREVER - PRODUCED BY JOHN MAYALL The set was recorded at Wolfman Jack's home studio in L.A. in just one day August 20, 1971 and features a line up that was to become part of Mayall's Jazz-Fusion ideas in the 1970s. This LP is very different. Albert plays with no effects, feedback or sustain. It's just plain straight ahead Blues. He also sings in mostly guitar keys instead of his usual Jazz keys. Mayall contributes all of the song's frameworks and King wrote the lyrics- mostly from his other songs and his expansive knowledge of old blues lyrics from Johnson, Brown, Robert Nighthawk, Elmore James, and many more! This album was discovered in the Stax vaults when their tape collections were handed over to Fantasy Records in the 1980s. It was never released because it didn't sound like Stax, or the Blues at the time. There are many great tunes on this collection, but "Sun Gone Down-takes 1 & 2" have to be at the top. A great slow blues- one of King's best. "Brand New Razor" is my second favourite tune. It really jumps! "Money Lovin Woman" showcases King's famous talking blues ability. In fact the whole set is really great, different and interesting. Track Listings 1. She Won't Gimme No Lovin' 2. Cold in Hand 3. Stop Lying 4. All the Way Down 5. Tell Me What True Love Is 6. Down the Road I Go 7. Money Lovin' Women 8. Sun Gone Down [Take 1] 9. Brand New Razor 10. Sun Gone Down [Take 2]

"Andre Previn & Russ Freeman, Double Play - Two Jazz Pianos"

ANDRE PREVIN & RUSS FREEMAN - DOUBLE PLAY - TWO JAZZ PIANOS FACTORY SEALED LP This unique album is believed to have been the first-ever such session by two modern jazz pianists. Not only were their pianistic conceptions similar, but they shared an interest in baseball that is made unmistakably clear by the titles of the originals, not to mention the inevitable "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." They were also close friends of (and frequent collaborators with) their colleague Shelly Manne. Previn was quite deeply involved in jazz at this stage of his career. Though they moved later to other worlds--Previn, of course, to the concert stages as an esteemed conductor, and Freeman to the Hollywood studios--both still occasionally reveal their abiding love for jazz. This is an effervescent, excellently conceived set, and a remarkable display of musical empathy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. Take Me Out to the Ball Game 2. Who's on First? 3. Called on Account of Rain 4. In the Cellar Blues 5. Batter Up 6. Double Play 7. Safe at Home 8. Fungo 9. Strike Out the Band

"Aretha Franklin, Sparkle Soundtrack"

ARETHA FRANKLIN - SPARKLE SOUNDTRACK - COMPOSED & PRODUCED BY CURTIS MAYFIELD Though she'd already been hailed as the Queen of Soul for her run of sultry '60s hits for Atlantic, Aretha Franklin split her time in the '70s between explorations of her gospel roots and flirtations with the pop mainstream, often with diminishing results. But, just as the music she had so long epitomized was evolving into rhythmic funk and nascent disco, Franklin teamed with fellow soul vet Curtis Mayfield to produce the soundtrack for this otherwise unremarkable film project, a collaboration that retrenched her successfully in the dramatic, gospel-rooted musical framework of a decade earlier. Thanks in no small part to Mayfield's focused, stripped-to-the-essentials production, Franklin frees herself to turn in remarkably consistent performances throughout, from the effervescent title track and romantic anthem "Something He Can Feel" to the soaring vocal showcase "I Get High" and infectious R&B groove of "Loving You Baby." 1. Sparkle 2. Something He Can Feel 3. Hooked on Your Love 4. Look into Your Heart 5. I Get High 6. Jump 7. Loving You Baby 8. Rock with Me

"Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Caravan"

ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS - CARAVAN Out of Print FACTORY SEALED Classic Analog LP - This album was given to me as an assignment to study the form of the tunes and phrasing of solos. My teacher has listened to my comments heard me play, and usually tries to recommend albums that open me up to something I can connect to. This wasn't the first album I have studied by his assignment so I trusted his selection without reserve. For example, he had passed me Crescent (probably the best studio recording John Coltrane ever did), Art Pepper meets the Rhythm Section (Philly Joe Jones solos here are ones I...and maybe every other drummer has memorized), and Somethin' Else (Miles as a sideman...sort of). Caravan has taken its place amongst the recordings I hold close to my soul. "This is for Albert" alone is an incredible tune, and I have spent enough time to justify buying this album ten times over with only that song. The tune is difficult to navigate and Art Blakey, like a master moves the song along with delicate rhyth-melodic phrasing. The sound attracted me. Listening to Freddie Hubbard on the whole album he is so energetic, so nineteen years old! And he interacts with the group so well. Art Blakey was an incredible leader, putting such youth and experience together and coming out with a monumental recording. Thermo is a premonition to the F Hubbard sound which has carved its own place in the history of jazz. The title track is also a masterful accomplishment. Art Blakey is a hard drummer, but that is Art Blakey....you try it and make that musical, because he does. It isnt just showmanship, there is more there to recognize. Mr Gray's sentiments are not mine to contradict or disregard, I just want you to know that what he wrote is not the end definition for this record. 1. Caravan - Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers 2. Sweet 'N' Sour - Art Blakey, Art Blakey 3. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning - Art Blakey, Art Blakey 4. This Is for Albert - Art Blakey, Art Blakey 5. Skylark - Art Blakey, Art Blakey

"Art Farmer Orchestra, Baroque Sketches"

ART FARMER ORCHESTRA - BAROQUE SKETCHES - TREMENDOUSLY RARE Out of Print Factory sealed LP - BAROQUE SKETCHES - Art Farmer enjoyed playing pieces with strong melodies, and the original concept of Baroque Sketches was to adapt the music of Johann Sebastian Bach into a jazz setting. After initial research, it was decided to also include works by Chopin and Albeniz, as well as John Lewis' "Little David's Fugue" and Sonny Rollins' "Alfie Theme." With arrangements by his former Jazztet partner Benny Golson, Farmer creates music that is entertaining, though unlikely to stand up to repeated listening. 1. "Art Farmer Quintet, The Time And The Place"

Classic Analog Out Of Print LP Pressing. Live Concert Performance, THE TIME AND THE PLACE - The son of a steelworker, Farmer began working as a musician from the mid-1940s onwards. Based in Los Angeles, he played in the bands of Benny Carter and Jay McShann among others. He joined Lionel Hampton's orchestra around 1953, fellow trumpeters Clifford Brown and Quincy Jones were also with Hampton at the time), and having relocated to New York, later worked with Gigi Gryce, Horace Silver and Gerry Mulligan among others. From the middle of the decade he featured in recordings by leading arrangers of the day, including George Russell, Jones and Oliver Nelson. He also formed "The Jazztet" with the composer and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson; both men had independently come to the decision that the other should be a member of their group. "The Jazztet" did not gain sufficient club engagements to last beyond 1962, but it did assist the careers of pianist McCoy Tyner and trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and the group recorded several albums for Argo and Mercury Records. Farmer and Golson revived "The Jazztet" in the 1980s for a number of engagements, with the original trombonist Curtis Fuller returning to the group. In the early 1960s Farmer established a trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Steve Swallow. He then moved to Europe, ultimately based in Vienna, where he performed with The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. Farmer also recorded extensively as a leader throughout his later career. Art Farmer has long been one of the most admired and respected trumpet stylists in jazz. THE TIME AND THE PLACE, a rock'n'roll-ish medium-tempo tune cast in a minor mode by Jimmy Heath, has a purposeful, direct feel conveyed by each of the three soloists - trumpet, tenor and piano. Tracks include: The time and The Place, The Shadow Of Your Smile, One for Juan - Nino's Scene, Short Cake, Make Someone happy and On the Trail. If you like your jazz mainstream-modern -- not avant-garde, screaming or far-out -- the Art Farmer Quintet is worth the listen.

"Art Farmer, When Farmer Met Gryce"

ART FARMER/GIGI GRYCE - WHEN FARMER MET GRYCE FACTORY SEALED LP Art Farmer (1928-1999) and Gigi Gryce (1927-1983) had a special relationship going in the mid-Fifties. They had been bandmates in the Lionel Hampton orchestra that visited France and Sweden in 1953, the band that included Clifford Brown, Jimmy Cleveland, et al., and discovered a natural musical camaraderie. Back in New York they further developed this affinity as Manhattan neighbors and musical partners. It was a specific association that lasted into 1956. On the first of the two dates here, Art and Gigi are backed by the Prestige house rhythm section of the time--Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke. It is a hot blowing session. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. A Night at Tony's 2. Blue Concept 3. Stupendous-Lee 4. Deltitnu 5. "Art Pepper, Living Legend"

ART PEPPER - LIVING LEGEND FACTORY SEALED LP Except for brief featured solos on a Buddy Rich big band date, this 1975 album was Art Pepper's first recording since 1960. Most of that 15-year absence from the studios was spent in prison or rehabilitation centers. When Pepper emerged from his ordeal free of the narcotics addiction that hobbled his brilliant career, his playing had greater power and depth than ever. Teamed with a rhythm section ideally constituted to fuel his imagination and intensity, Pepper's playing contains what critic Doug Ramsey described as "an emotional concentration, a cry - sometimes a sob and sometimes a joyous shout - that comes from the wisdom of experience. Living Legend was Pepper's stentorian announcement that he was back. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. Ophelia 2. "Art Pepper, No Limit"

140 Gram Limited Edition Analog Virgin Vinyl. No longer making a comeback, in 1977 Art Pepper had firmly reinstalled himself on the jazz scence. He was playing with all of his old facility and a new depth of expression born out of the pain of his ruinous years and the joy of his personal and artisitc rebirth. No Limit found Pepper once again in the comopany of the rapidly developing young pianisst George Cables, who had been so important to the sucess of The Trip (OJC 410). Pepper and Cables were to make ten more albums together over the next few years. Drummer Carl Burnett, another of Pepper's favorites, was on the date along with the powerful bassist Tony Dumas. The session includeda moving performance of "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men" and the Latin abandon of "Mambo de la Pinta," with Pepper overdubbing a wild chase on tenor and alto. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1.
