The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than Help! or A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single. When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. It is a good place to begin for people who (gasp) might not own Beatles albums--But it's also essential for those who own all the albums, because many of these songs weren't included on the other releases. And that is the real key to this collection. Many were only released as 45 singles & never on Beatles LP's.

"After the harrowing Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon returned to calmer, more conventional territory with Imagine. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of 'Jealous Guy' lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty 'Crippled Inside' is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and 'Imagine' is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal. And Lennon doesn't shy away from the hard rockers – 'How Do You Sleep' is a scathing attack on Paul McCartney, 'I Don't Want To Be A Soldier' is a hypnotic antiwar song, and 'Give Me Some Truth' is bitter hard rock. If Imagine doesn't have the thematic sweep of Plastic Ono Band, it is nevertheless a remarkable collection of songs that Lennon would never be able to better again."
