50 MILLION FANS CAN'T BE WRONG - Posed in one of my favorite Elvis suits, it’s great cover art to an album (great to frame) defining some of Elvis’ greatest pre-Army songs. This 1959 collection captures the King at his rock & roll best, spotlighting the hits he recorded right before entering the Army. Elvis never rocked any harder or better than he did on tracks like “A Big Hunk of Love” and “I Need Your Love Tonight”, and the single “(Now and Then) There’s A Fool Such as I”, which seemingly merged every musical style he’d ever attempted into one two-and-a-half minute masterpiece, as well as a great romantic ballad, “My Wish Came True”.

DATE WITH ELVIS - In 1959, at the time when RCA launched this record on the market, the label’s shinning rock star was out of the country doing his military service in Germany. In order to comfort all his fans during his forced absence, the record bosses produced an album with a smartly uniformed Elvis on the cover, smiling widely to let his faithful followers know that he’d be back soon. There was a special calendar, too, so that his fans could count off the days until his return. This marketing ploy was extremely successful. The record became a highly desirable collector’s item and even years later illegal dollars still flowed from pirate copies.
The RCA producers kept mum about when and where the tracks were recorded. But who cares about that when listening to Elvis giving the "blue grass" classic "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" his unmistakable, rockabilly sound? The other titles, all of them performed by a well-proven ensemble of rock ‘n’ roll musicians, are filled with the honest, powerful language of the young - or from today’s viewpoint, old - Elvis. Which takes us back full circle to the date. What better way is there to celebrate the 50th birthday of rock ‘n’ roll than with this early album by its King?

BRAIN SALAD SURGERY Emerson, Lake & Palmer- one of the first and most successful of the post-'60's rock "super-group." Its three members had each woodshedded in some of Britain's most innovative bands, and by the time they joined forces in 1970, they were virtuosos on their respective instruments-Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on guitar, and Carl Palmer on drums. From the beginning, ELP's recording displayed these musical chops on epic-length composition inspired by such classical masters as Mussorgsky, Prokoflev, and Aaron Copland. The bands' spectacular concerts were the stuff of legend, employing lights, sets, and effects on a scale never before seen in rock. ELP racked up millions in sales through the 1970s, and their dozen-plus albums virtually defined progressive rock. Brain Salad Surgery is surely the trio's finest hour. The 1973 album-ELP's biggest seller-is as famed among fans for Alien designer H.R. Giger's striking cover art as it is for such ELP concert staples like the near-30-minute "Kam Evil 9".
