Legendary Hammond B-3 organist Brian Auger has enjoyed a long, prolific career, but there is a special brilliance to his late-1960s, early-'70s albums, including this recording with his band Trinity (the first Auger album without Julie Driscoll). The keyboardist deftly pulls off a cover of "I Wanna Take You Higher," Albinoni's stately "Adagio in G minor," within the same album, a spirited mellotron-laced "Pavane" by Faure, and some funky originals.

Whether he was clear or not in his vision only he can say, but Here and Now sounds like the effort of an artist who has lost his way. While Auger can't really be blamed for the sound of this recording, it still doesn't weather well because of its sheeny 1980s sound (it was originally released in 1984). The faux disco tunes that seem to be swinging for some sort of pop fence (though this sound had already been history for five years by 1984), are empty of real emotion, and filled instead with female backing vocalists to add that edge they so sorely lack. The only place where this isn't true is on the instrumentals, such as "Heart of the Hunter," where the trademark Auger exploratory consciousness is roving the musical landscape in search of knotty harmonics and altered cadences in his solos. The album did net a hit single in "Happiness Is Just Around the Corner," but unfortunately, it doesn't hold up well over time. While this album is a big miss, it certainty was a momentary lapse. Auger's career as an innovator and inspiration continues into the 21st century with fine recordings and legendary live shows. ~ Thom Jurek

Though Cheap Trick's second album, In Color, draws from the same stockpile of Midwestern barroom favorites as their debut album, it was produced by Tom Werman, who had the band strip away their raw attack and replace it with a shiny, radio-ready sound. Consequently, In Color doesn't have the visceral attack of its predecessor, but it still has the same sensibility and a similar set of spectacular songs. From the druggy psychedelia of "Downed" and the bubblegum singalong "I Want You to Want Me" to the "California Girls" homage of "Southern Girls," the album has the same encyclopedic knowledge of rock & roll, as well as the good sense to subvert it with a perverse sense of humor. Portions of the album haven't dated well, simply due to the glossy production, but the songs and music on In Color are as splendid as the band's debut. CHRISTINE PERFECT - Christine Perfect is a British-born singer who worked with Spencer Davis in the early '60s and later fronted Chicken Shack before going off on her own with this solo album in 1970. By then, she had also contributed to recordings by Fleetwood Mac and became romantically involved with the group's bassist, John McVie. She then married McVie and officially joined the group, for which she served as vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter, contributing some of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits. In 1976, Sire Records issued the first U.S. release of what had been a mega-import of the Blue Horizon 1970 U.K. release, and album called simply Christine Perfect, the maiden name of Christine McVie. You don't need a crystal ball to tell you the album is classic and tremendous – the big surprise is that it didn't go multi-platinum in the States. There are 12 tracks, and "I'd Rather Go Blind," the cover of an Etta James classic, went Top 10 in the U.K.

Chicken Shack is the '60s blues-rock group best known for onetime member Christine McVie, who went on to join Fleetwood Mac.
This Japanese limited-edition CD comes in a mini-LP sleeve that replicates the original album's artwork.

This was Chicken Shack's most popular album, making the British Top Ten. If you're looking for relics of the British Blues Boom, however, you'd be much better off with Ten Years After, to say nothing of legitimate artists such as Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall. British blues at its best could be exciting (if usually derivative), but it's difficult to fathom how this relentlessly plodding, monotonous effort met with such success. Stan Webb took most of the songwriting and vocal chores, emulating the slow-burning Chicago boogie with little skill or subtlety (though he wasn't a bad guitarist). Christine Perfect did write and sing a few songs, but these unfortunately found both her compositional and vocal chops at a most callow stage of development. To nail the coffin, most of the songs were preceded by excruciating comic dialog that made Cheech & Chong sound sophisticated in comparison. ~ Richie Unterberger
