For once, a record label actually gives us more bang for the buck, combining two indisputable classics--1969's self-titled debut and the 1970 follow-up Idlewild South--onto one glorious CD. Five urgent notes kick off Spencer Davis's "Don't Want You No More," and by the time that searing instrumental morphs into Gregg Allman's superb slow blues "It's Not My Cross to Bear," it's clear these Georgians mean business. Everyone talks of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon covers, the furious twin leads of Duane and Dickey Betts, Gregg's soulful voice and formidable organ, the percussion attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, but what about the songwriting skills? Just start with "Cross to Bear," "Whipping Post," "Dreams," "Revival," "Elizabeth Reed"--are you kidding? These two records blend gritty blues, Southern soul, and psychedelic rock into an exciting creation, and they serve notice: the Allmans will contend for the title of best American rock & roll band.

Japanese remaster in an LP-replica sleeve adds a bonus DVD.
By the end of the 1970s, the golden age of progressive rock was over, and Jethro Tull, former rulers of the prog-rock roost, entered the '80s sporting a radical change in both personnel and sound. Some of the change was a result of circumstance--longtime piano player John Evans and keyboardist/arranger David Palmer departed after '79's STORMWATCH, and bassist John Glascock had recently died, leaving only Ian Anderson and guitarist Martin Barre. Anderson enlisted Dave Pegg, the rock-solid former Fairport Convention bass player; prog-rock veteran Eddie Jobson on electric violin and keyboards, and Mark Craney, the first of several Tull drummers in the '80s.
With the art-rock of the '70s out of vogue, Anderson opted to update Tull's image and dispense with the Elizabethan persona that had served him so well for so long. Instead, the group is pictured on the cover in a futuristic air traffic control station, wearing utilitarian white jumpsuits and pensively observing the sky. This was a radical change for a band named after an 18th-century agrarian. On songs like "Crossfire," Anderson gives the Tull sound a convincing '80s makeover, setting his old English melodies against airy production and textured synthesizers.

For their ninth album, Procol Harum turned to production by the veteran songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller, who had written the first single ("Poison Ivy") by Procol predecessor band, the Paramounts. Though the band is in top form (especially drummer B.J. Wilson) and despite a strong start (with the exquisite "Pandora's Box," a U.K. hit), the album largely runs out of steam by side two. Too much of the Brooker and Reid material is competent rather than exciting. Likewise, Procol fails to render memorable versions of two cover songs, Leiber and Stoller's "I Keep Forgetting" or the Beatles' "Eight Days A Week." Most of this album's best material can be found on the Chrysalis Years collection. [Grand Hotel and Procol's Ninth were later re-released as Cornerstone, a budget double album.] ~ James A. Gardner

Iron Butterfly: Ron Bushy, Erik Brann, Doug Ingle, Lee Dorman.
Recorded in 1969. Originally released on Atco (33280).
Following the huge success of their second record, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly scored a second straight Top Five album with Ball. While it didn't have any acid rock freak-out to compare with the epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," Ball was a more ambitious album, as the group experimented with shorter, more melodic songs. Like any Iron Butterfly album, the quality of the material is wildly inconsistent, yet cut for cut, Ball is a more consistent album than their two previous records, as the group trimmed away some of the acid rock excesses of their earlier records while retaining their brutally loud trademark heavy guitars. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Album notes
Iron Butterfly: Mike Pinera (vocals, guitar), Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Bill Cooper (12-string guitar), El Rhino (guitar), Richard Podolor (sitar, 12-string guitar), Lee Dorman (bass), Ron Bushy (drums).
Recorded at American Recording Company, Studio City, California. Originally released on Atco (33-339). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
All songs written or co-written by Iron Butterfly.
On Ball, Iron Butterfly began to expand its sound, attempting to write more concisely. On Metamorphosis, the group continued its musical explorations, adding a layered production to its sound. This ambition, highlighted by a handful of strong tracks, particularly the single "Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)," makes for an interesting listen, since Iron Butterfly's albums can be weighed down by their relentless heaviness. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

TRICK OF THE TAIL was Genesis' first LP after the departure of Peter Gabriel.
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Hackett (electric & 12-string guitars); Tony Banks (12-string guitar, piano, keyboards); Mike Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass).
Engineers: David Hentschel, Nick Haddock Bradford.
Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England in October & November 1975.
This was Genesis' first album following the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel. After ascending the heights of conceptual progressive rock on the preceding THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, Genesis was left between a rock and a hard place, trying to define its identity anew. With the odds against them they put in a fine showing on TRICK OF THE TAIL. The general musical mode is similar to that of LAMB--longish songs with well developed structures and arrangements and a straighter rock feel than the band's early work.
Lyrically, the band didn't attempt to equal Gabriel's conceptual mastery, choosing instead to tackle discrete subjects on each song; "Squonk" is about a mythical beast, "Entangled" centers around an unpleasant hospital stay. Phil Collins, technically a better vocalist than Gabriel to begin with, steps up admirably as lead singer (he'd already sung lead on a couple of earlier Genesis tunes), but despite the popular myth he didn't take over the band. He receives co-writing credit for only two songs on TRICK OF THE TAIL, an album that's very much a group effort.

Comes with sleeves similar to Vinyl LPs, Cardboard packaging like an ORIGINAL LP. Actual miniaturized version of the 12” LP in 4” CD version.
Expanded & remastered reissue of their 1978 release. Features two live bonus tracks, 'Hot Blooded' & 'Love Maker'. Includes new liner notes written by Jerry McCulley.
For many music acts who make a big commercial splash with their debut album, they usually fall victim to the "sophomore jinx" when they release their 2nd album (i.e. the 2nd album sells poorly, and the artist subsequently vanishes without a trace). Who knows what causes it? All *I* know is that it takes a very special 2nd album to keep the masses coming back for a second helping. The mighty rockers known as Foreigner, led by the unique, powerful voice of Lou Gramm, and the masterful guitar & vocals of Mick Jones, avoided the sophomore jinx just fine, thank you very much, with their 2nd album, 1978's "Double Vision," which sold even more copies than their self-titled debut from the previous year. It's all about quality, folks: "Double Vision" is another great album of melodic rock as only Foreigner can do it. Great stuff all over the place on this one: the classic head-bobbers "Hot Blooded," the title song, and "Blue Morning, Blue Day," and wonderful ballads like "You're All I Am," "Back Where You Belong" & "I Have Waited So Long." There's even a strong, rare Foreigner instrumental, "Tramontane," and more kick-butt numbers like "Love Has Taken It's Toll," "Lonely Children," and the awesome finale, "Spellbinder." This new version of "Double Vision" also contains a pair of cool bonus tracks: a live version of "Hot Blooded," and a live performance of a rare song, "Love Maker." Foreigner *totally* rock the house with this pair of live tracks. Featuring top-notch, catchy tunes from end to end, and performed to perfection by the band, Foreigner's "Double Vision" is an instant rock classic.

ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! Japanese Limited Edition Issue of the Album Classic in a Deluxe, Miniaturized LP Sleeve Replica of the Original Vinyl Album Artwork
Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, Lynyrd Skynyrd is about an indomitable will. About survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American, stubbornly resolute.
With their first set of new studio material since 2003’s Vicious Cycle, legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd returns with God & Guns, due out September 29 on Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records. Recorded in Nashville in 2008-2009, the project was interrupted—but, tellingly, not ended—by the deaths of founding member/keyboardist Billy Powell and longtime bassist Ean Evans earlier this year.
Driven by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Lynyrd Skynyrd have recorded an album (“under duress, as usual,” according to Van Zant) that very much lives up to the legacy begun some 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they rock on.
With the passing of Powell and Evans, “a lot of people probably expected us to say enough is enough,” admits Medlocke. But that would not be the way of this Rock & Roll Hall of Fame powerhouse. With a catalog of over 60 albums and sales beyond 30 million, Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations, and God & Guns is a fitting addition to the canon. The Skynyrd Nation awaits.
“We wanted to show the people that not only are we doing the old material, keeping the music going, but we still have some new tricks up our sleeves, too,” says founding guitarist Gary Rossington.
Returning to the studio after the death of Powell, whose keyboards can be heard on more than half the songs on God & Guns, was “very difficult, I ain’t gonna lie to you,” says Van Zant. “But we got through it, as Lynyrd Skynyrd seems to always do. Music’s a great healer. These songs needed to be out there, this record needed to be made. Gary, Rickey and myself just said ‘let’s go for it, let’s get this thing done.’”
Unfortunately, coping with loss is familiar to this band. “We just kind of fell back in,” says Rossington. “We’ve been doing this a long time, so you just kind of do what you do. As you get older, you get a little more used to it. You know it’s coming, and it’s coming to you, too. I just thank God for every day and all the time I had with the guys that aren’t with us anymore.”
The crying is over and now it’s time to rock. “We’ve had some really bad moments this year already, and I’m glad we’re able to pick ourselves up by our boot straps and just continue to play,” says Medlocke. “For us to weather through this makes this record even more special. I’m sure Billy and Ean are looking down upon us with big smiles.”
With noted rock producer Bob Marlette, input from guitarist John 5, and a wealth of material written by the band and a cadre of elite Skynyrd-minded songwriters, a remarkable album emerged. “We never really worked with producers that well, we kind of always wanted to do it our way,” admits Rossington. “But Bob Marlette came on and he’s such a great guy; he figured out how to talk to us musically, and we became friends instantly. He had a lot of fresh ideas and ways to do things, and also wanted to capture the old sounds, too.”
Of John 5, Rossington adds, “he’s probably one of the best guitar players I’ve ever played with, and I’ve played with a lot of great ones. He just lives with a guitar on him, and he knows that neck like nobody I’ve ever seen.”
With a backbone of Southern rock and country, passionate Van Zant vocals, and trademark layered guitars, God & Guns manages to maintain the iconic Skynyrd punch while sounding completely contemporary. Sure to attract attention in these politically divided times is the title track, which harbors a sense of menace and unwillingness to back down that hearkens back to Skynyrd’s earliest days. The band knows the song, and others like “That Ain’t My America,” will have their critics, but Medlocke says listeners should get beyond the title.
“It’s not just the words ‘God and guns.’ you gotta look past that and look at what this country was founded on: freedom,” Medlocke says. “Everybody should be able to make their own decisions and not be led around by a nose ring and told what to do and when to do it.”
And if some critics don’t like it, “that’s called freedom of choice,” says Medlocke, who carries his Native American heritage with pride. “I’m sure some critics will look at it, God & Guns, the rednecks are back.’ Well, the guys in this band aren’t rednecks, Rickey Medlocke’s the only damn redneck in this band ‘cause I got red skin.”
The title track, along with the unmistakable Skynyrd bite of the first single “Still Unbroken,” form thematic songs for an album laden with attitude, heart and purpose. “Skynyrd’s about tradition,” says Medlocke. “We are guys that don’t go around preaching about our own personal or political beliefs, although I’m sure you could probably guess mine. In this record is personal tragedy, personal relationships and being on the road, all under that umbrella of real life. That’s what we think, that’s what we believe, and we stand next to that title, God & Guns.”
To portray Skynyrd as a bunch of “gun nuts” would be incorrect, according to Van Zant. “I’m kind of like Ronnie, ‘handguns are made for killing,’ and I’ve never seen anybody shoot a deer with a .38,” he says. “I do own a bunch of rifles, I live out in the swamp, and you’ve got to protect yourself.”
Skynyrd is a band, after all, that has never shied away from standing up and speaking for a segment of the population whose voices are seldom heard. “Everybody’s so scared to say stuff these days, that’s not what I’m about,” says Van Zant. “We live in America, we can speak our minds. These are our values. That doesn’t mean we’re always right in everybody’s mind. Hopefully, we don’t offend a bunch of people. And if we do, well, get a record deal, man, and make your own songs.”
This is a band well aware of the responsibility that comes with putting the name ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ on anything, be it an album or a concert. “We feel like we have to keep the standards high,” says Rossington. “I wouldn’t put this record out, I’d fight not to, if I didn’t think it was good.”
And so Skynyrd stands, “still unbroken,” in 2009. “People may say, ‘they need the money,’ well I don’t think any of us need the money,” Van Zant says. “It’s just that we love the music, it’s bigger than the money, it’s not even about that any more. We have to make a living, sure, but it’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”
Adds Rossington, “We’re still standing, still keeping the music going.
"Pronounced" is a great album. "Street Survivors" and "Gimme Back My Bullets" (which is SO underrated!) are great, too, and "Nuthin' Fancy" is a gem, but the greatest studio album ever put out by Skynyrd has to be "Second Helping." Buy them all (and also "One More From The Road [Deluxe Edition]" and, if you want to hear what the new version of the band sounds like, "Edge Of Forever"), but put this album at the top of the list.

Japanese OBI MINI REPLICA BOX SET
WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI-LP-SLEEVE" CD?
Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.
Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.
Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.
Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded.
All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece. Japanese digitally re-mastered Mini LP replica Limited Edition Collection with OBI sash down the front – only 2,000 Collector pieces made world-wide and are immediately Out of Print. Recorded from the finest Original Masters available. Comes with anti-static sleeves similar to Vinyl LPs, Cardboard packaging like an LP. Actual miniaturized version of the 12” LP in 4” CD version.
Archetypal prog-rockers Yes formed in London in the late 60s. They gained vast popularity in the 1970s and have managed to keep a faithful following long after the prog movement lost its force. Credit for their long-standing relevance lies with the distinctive vocals and lyrics of frontman Jon Anderson and the musicianship of the band’s many members who have come and gone over the life of the group.
Yes wore their prog credentials on their flared sleeves, with long track-times and multiple changes in chord and tempo. Their songs embraced futurism and utopia, and their live appearances involved complex light shows for the total prog experience, while their recorded works featured the intricate artwork of fantasy art favourite Roger Dean.
The band originally performed prog cover versions, with their self-titled debut album in 1969 featuring versions of tracks by The Byrds and The Beatles. They began to write their own material, taking on influences from classical to jazz. The results were a stream of gold and platinum-selling albums throughout the 70s, with Fragile and Close to the Edge considered fan favourites.
Personality clashes are a feature among groups of people in prolonged close contact, and Yes were no different. After a brief spilt in 1980, during which Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson left the band, a new line-up released Drama. The album made the Top 5 in the UK, despite the absence of Anderson’s lead vocals. Another split followed the album, this time for longer.
The new band emerged two years later, with a new sound. Producer Trevor Horn brought a synth-rock sound to 1983’s 90125. The album gave the band their biggest chart success with “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which topped the Rock and the Hot 100 charts in the US.
The band broke up again after 90125, and the 80s were marked by disputes between former member about rights to the name Yes, and the bands back catalogue. By the late 80s there was Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe in one corner and Yes, with Squire, White and Kaye in the other.
The boys made up and the resulting love-child, Union, though not as commercially successful as previous efforts, did provide the single “Lift Me Up”, which spent over a month at the top of the Album Rock Tracks chart. Since then members have still come and gone, though the albums have not sold as well as their commercial peak. In 2004 the group were officially resting, though as 2008 marked their 40th anniversary, a world tour was planned -- unfortunately illness forced a cancellation of the much anticipated concerts and fans will have to wait to see what they do next.

7. Whitefish -
Japanese pressing of their 1985 live mini-album featuring the line-up of Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Jon Anderson, Alan White and Chris Squire. Seven tracks, including concert renditions of 'Hold On', 'Changes' and their interpretation of 'Amazing Grace'. Three of the tracks were recorded in Dortmund, Germany in 1984; the rest were recorded at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, Canada in 1984.
YESSHOWS - 2 CD SET ADDITIONAL BONUS TRACKS ON THIS SHMCD - This is Yes' second live album, and focuses on songs from the three studio albums preceding it. All the tracks here are played beautifully and powerfully; the versions of "Time and a Word", "Gates of Delerium", and "Ritual" are especially brilliant. What I like about Yes in a live context is how they can make a subtle change in a song (like the organ solo on "Parallels" being given to the synthesizer instead) and that change gives the song a completely new flavor. The same effect is achieved in "Ritual" when they move the bass into a more prominent role for the solo.
I'd like to comment on that bass solo - I think it's the best live bass solo I've heard. The way Squire plays at an unusual range (most of this solo is played in the same range as a guitar's low E string) has always fascinated me. Another thing about this solo is how the rest of the band just lets go and lets Squire take over - in particular listen to Moraz: he's just tinkling along, playing the same triplet pattern.
Listen closely to "Gates" and you'll hear some apalling mistakes made by Howe - in the beginning of the song he enters too slowly, throwing everyone off track for a moment, and at 13:45 he starts his solo in the wrong octave, and has to add half a measure and cram some notes together to get back on track. But in spite of these errors, the group remains solid, and ends up playing "Gates" better than they did in the studio. Anderson's voice on this track is at its harshest, and in perfect form (as usual). - Disc: 1
1. Parallels
2. Time and a Word
3. Going for the One
4. The Gates of Delirium
DISC 2 Tracks include: 1. Don't Kill the Whale
2. Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil), Pt. 1-2
3. Wondrous Stories
4. I've Seen All Good People [*]
5. Roundabout [*]
DRAMA The "Drama" album will always be somewhat of an oddity in the Yes catalogue, for no other reason that it is the only album in Yes' 35 years that does not feature leadsinger Jon Anderson. If, however, you can get beyond this, you will discover that "Drama", much like its predecessor "Tormato" is actually a lot better than belies its reputation.
The "Expanded and Remastered" version of Drama (16 tracks; 79 min.) starts of with the original 6 tracks of the album. Among the best tracks: "Machine Massiah" is a return to the 10 min. epic tracks of earlier in their career, albeit with the guitars much more upfront. "Into the Lens" is an 8. min. romper (and later was redone as "I Am a Camera" by the Buggles). "Run Through the Light", a minor hit, is a super-catchy power-ballad.
The bonus tracks go from the unnecessary (single versions of "Into the Lens" and "Run Through the Light") to the mildy interesting (instrumentals "Have We Really Got to Go Trough With This" and "Song No.4 (Satellite)", to the fascinating last 4 tracks. Those tracks are from the Roy Thomas Baker (famed for producing Queen era-"Bohemian Rhapsody") sessions with Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman from the Fall of 1979 that eventually were abandoned. It gives a nice insight to what might have been the "logical" successor to "Tormato", but assuming that these tracks in fact were the best from those sessions, it's easy to see why the band didn't pursue them. "Golden Age" is the standout song of the four.
In all, I cannot give enough compliments to Rhino, which has done an absolute outstanding job not only with the "Drama" reissue, but with the reissue of the Yes catalogue in general. Lines notes, remastering, bonus tracks, it's all here. Even if "Drama" isn't on your top wish list of Yes albums, you'll nevertheless enjoy this particular reissue.- 1. Machine Messiah
2. White Car
3. Does It Really Happen?
4. Into the Lens
5. Run Through the Light
6. Tempus Fugit
7. Into the Lens (I Am a Camera) [Single Version] [*][Version]
8. Run Through the Light [Single Version] [*][Version]

11. Tempus Fugi [Tracking Session] [#][*][Version]
12. White Car [Tracking Session] [#][*][Version]
13. Dancing Through the Light [*]

TORMATO - Yes singer Jon Anderson has a voice so high it makes Minnie Mouse seem the epitome of machismo and the band's fascination with pompous and dull intergalactic fantasy make it a prime target for Saturday Night Live parody. But there's no arguing with the players' proficiency. Bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman, and drummer Alan White are all tops in their game. Tormato is far from the best Yes album, but the indisputable power of "Release, Release" where the band goofingly state "Rock is the medium of our generation" is worth the price of admission alone. Besides, just figuring out what exactly they mean with song titles such as "Arriving UFO" and "Don't Kill the Whale" is probably almost as cool as staring at the Hipgnosis designed cover. A period piece without question

GOING FOR THE ONE - THIS PRESSING HAS 12 TRACKS ALOT OF BONUS MATERIAL - Yes released this magnificent, often overlooked gem in 1977: a time when art rock was being scoffed at as pretentious and overblown. Punk had surged forth, and Johnny Rotten & Co. had a field day ripping Yes, Pink Floyd, Queen and others. It would appear during that time (at least during the making of this album), the members of Yes didn't give a darn about the trends of the day, as their usual cosmic, soaring, mystical aesthetic pervades the album in a big way (which is a good thing.)
The music on here is splendid - soaring, lush, illuminating -- an orgasm for the soul. Jon Anderson's vocals soar high, Steve Howe's guitar playing stuns as usual, and is very fluid, Chris Squire's (and Steve's) backing, majestic vocals blend magnificently with Jon's (and not to mention the man's bass playing), Rick Wakeman (who makes his return with Yes for the first time since 1973's _Tales From Topographic Oceans_) supplies his virtuosic, classically-oriented flourishes not just through synthesizers, but also a church organ, and other types of keyboards.
Alan White is possibly one of the most underacknowledged drummers out there. His drumming skills possibly go largely unnoticed due to the overpowering cosmic front brought on by the other members of the band. With this powerfully compelling, lush exterior Yes possesses, how could one possibly be fully aware of subtle nuances that are arguably beneath the surface? While many of us are being lifted higher to some heavenly place, it is all too common to miss the technical brilliance that is going on. Alan's drumming is the perfect example for this. While all of the cosmic stuff is knocking us sideways, Alan is in the background doing all sorts of creative and impressive things on the kit: his sense of time, the creative use (and placement) of the cymbals and snare hits during a certain meter, and other subtle things should not be taken lightly. This is just one of the many, many, many reasons why I think Yes are special: they possess technical brilliance, but they have something else as well -- something that's arguably even more powerful and intangible than their technical abilities.
The title track, while cosmic and grand, is quite raucous, mostly due to the steel guitar musings from Steve Howe. It can be grating at times, but it also helps to give the track a harder edge. The rhythmical quality of the vocals during the bridge (repeated once more before the ending) is quite creative and seductive. This, and more, help to lead up to the orgasmic, goosebump-inducing climax of the song, which feature choral effects from the vocal harmonies.
"Turn of The Century" is a smooth, mystical, ballad with a new age aesthetic. The lyrics on here are touching, and the soundscapes are ethereal and image-inducing as ever. Jon's vocals are outstanding as always. Sonic textures mostly brought on by Steve's musings during the middle of the track give way to the ethereal, majestic climax near the end of the song.
"Parallels" is written by Chris Squire, and is grand and soaring as ever. Rick's use of the church organ here certainly adds more of a mystical, spiritual and regal quality to the track. This track, while cosmic on the outside, is quite busy underneath it all. Check out the time changes, the multiple vocal layers, and the instrumentation that is going on all at once -- Rick's keyboard lines, Steve's guitar lines, Chris' basslines, and Alan's drumming.
"Wonderous Stories" is much like "Turn of The Century" -- a ballad with a mystical, new age aesthetic. Jon's vocals, as always, are precious and moving. Steve's guitar lines here are quite melodic, and what's impressive are how well they blend in with the rest of the instrumentation.
"Awaken" is classic. Like the rest of the album -- but more specifically, here -- it is almost impossible to put into account the effect it has on me. It's the 15-minute closer of the album, and boy, is it ever so good. Grand, lush, soaring, illuminating -- this track soars, and it shines as bright as the sun. The massive bed of sound just smothers your senses, and does not let go. Yes even got a church choir to add their voices in certain parts of the track. It is the most goosebump-inducing song on the album, and is also my favorite Yes song. There is quite a bit of stuff going on here -- the vocal harmonies are penetrating, the basslines tasteful, Steve's solos orgasmic. On a different listening session, when you're not being seduced by the powerful cosmic aura of this music -- or when you're trying your hardest not to be -- pay attention to the technical stuff going on in these songs. In this track, one of the many things I'd like to talk about is Alan's drumming: pay special attention to what Alan is doing on the drum kit, especially during the "suns high streams thru," "strong dreams reign here," and "star, song, age, less" sections of the track. It's quite nifty.
This is an excellent album from Yes. Highly recommended -- that is, if you are a Yes fan, own (and love) all of their studio albums, particularly from the 1971-1974 period, but do not own this. Don't pass it by.

RELAYER - HAS 3 BONUS TRACKS NOT LISTED
Buy it... yesterday! (today it's too late). Maybe there are 15 seconds of doubtful melody sung "a capella" near the end of the album. The rest is excellent in each note of every instrument.
This is a formal clon of Close to The Edge. Anderson, Howe and Squire are at their best ever. Allan White's job is perfect, as he'd feeling genuine part of the band surpassing the Tales test of substituing Bruford. Rick Wakeman was replaced by Patrick Moraz that reaches the best performance of his life, with a perfect domain over new synth timbres that revitalizes the band. The general sound quality of this album is also incredible.
The Gates of Dellirium is the story (both words and music) of a tribe pushed to deffensive battle, which they finally win saving their lives and consolidating their collective values. There are three moments through the piece: normal life, war and final hopeful peace.
To be Over is the calm one (remember And You & I), melting the Howe's usual effects and glide with the smooth but rich synths introduced by Moraz.
Sound Chaser recovers the nerve but under a much more free form that Siberian Kathru, and the solo electric piano of the opening and the synth in the end are real masterpieces.
At this point Yes begins his decadence, surely because of the reappearance of crude simple rock brought by punk, new wave, raggae and those trends that The Police will unify with great talent. I presume if you're reading this is because you love progressive music and not Michael Jackson or Christina Aguilera.
Exception made of Turn of the Century, Awaken, Future Times-Rejoice and Release-Release (and with some extra indulgence also Wonderous Stories, Madrigal and ABHW) the group would never get too high.
Tracks include: 1.The Gates Of Delirium 2. Sound Chaser 3. To Be Over

Rich, successful, happily married, and absurdly talented, Paul McCartney had nothing to do, so he recorded Wild Life. That would explain the frippery for which this curious record has long been ridiculed, but it's a perspective that does Wild Life--recorded in a couple of days--a disservice. In every sense it's the work of a still-young man still reeling from the '60s, unsure what to do with himself, in a still-young decade that had the same problem. Once past the thumbs-up inanity of "Bip Bop," much of it is great--like the title track, an ominous, slow-mo blues, showcasing a throat-shredding McCartney vocal and a genuine sense of doom, and the bleak and wistful "Tomorrow." Best is "Dear Friend," a red-raw ballad that throws long shadows over the rest of the album, with McCartney singing of his crushed friendship with John Lennon

Digitally remastered Japanese limited edition in an LP-style slipcase.
Remastered Japanese limited edition comes in a vinyl style sleeve.CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve.Queen's 1973 debut is definitely their most underrated album of that decade. Although most tracks aren't as well known as the band's later material, QUEEN proves to be an impressively consistent listen from beginning to end. It's extraordinary how many of the group's future musical trademarks were already detectable in their debut--Brian May's orchestrated guitar harmonies, multi-tracked vocal "choirs," imaginative songwriting and dynamics that could switch from head-banging heavy metal to reflective balladry in the blink of an eye.Although QUEEN was recorded off and on over a three-year period, the tracks still manage to be focused and unified. The rocker "Liar" contains a middle section that foreshadows Queen's future hits (1975's "Bohemian Rhapsody," 1976's "Somebody To Love," etc.) while "The Night Comes Down" and "Doing All Right" are two gorgeous ballads. But make no mistake: the majority of QUEEN is raucous hard rock--see "Great King Rat" and the grand Zeppelin groove of "Son & Daughter." Also included as a CD bonus track is the forgotten composition "Mad The Swine," and an instrumental version of their future hit "Seven Seas Of Rhye."
Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- The frantic 'Keep Yourself Alive' still sounds fresh, while 'Liar' and 'Son & Daughter' impress with their swagger and manic harmonies...
3 stars out of 5 -- [T]here's a greater bombast to the tempo-jumping 'My Fairy King' and 'Great King Rat'...
Record Collector
4 stars out of 5 -- [This album] highlights the band's raw roots, particularly on a series of 1971 demos. On those tracks Freddie Mercury already belts like the superstar he'd become...

This cd was released after THE WHO SELL OUT did not do for the WHO what it should have. This cd contains some "A" and "B" sides and also songs included on THE WHO s' second and third albums (A QUICK ONE and SELLS OUT). At the moment of its release THE WHO had enough songs recorded for a follow up to SELLS OUT (Faith in Something Bigger, Jaguar, Glow Girl, Dogs, Magic Bus, Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hide, Girls Eyes and some others). The story says that Keith Lambert (the Who s' great manager and producer), wanted to release a record with a name like "Who s' for Tennis" (horrible name for an album). So someone at DECCA/MCA (their record company), decided to do "this" including their then new 45 "Magic Bus". This cd includes some songs recorded for WHO SELLS OUT in a different mix. Also 3 John Entwistle compositions: "Doctor Doctor", "Someone is Coming", "Doctor Jeckyl & Mr. Hide, this one has not yet appeared on any other cd, mix or version and is one of his best songs (sadly they never played in concert).
If you are a real WHO fan, then you should have this because of "Jeckyl and Hide) and "Magic Bus", and also the other songs that have different mixes.

SECOND HELPING - HAS TWO BONUS TRACKS NOT LISTED - What can I say? Every single song on this album is a classic. If I wanted to list the great songs on it, I'd just direct you to the track listing. Yes -- it's that good.
Obviously, the most popular song on this album is "Sweet Home Alabama." It's a good song, but there's more to Skynyrd than ole "Sweet Home." Songs like "Workin' For MCA," "The Needle And The Spoon," "Call Me The Breeze," and "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew" are every bit as good as "Sweet Home."
Also, don't listen to whoever said the mix/production are poor. This album's mix is fine. Skynyrd albums use panning EXTREMELY well, increasing the impact of their double or triple guitar leads and riffs. The production is fine, too, and "Call Me The Breeze" is far from lame.
One more thing: "Was I Right Or Wrong" is a great song. It was originally supposed to be on this album, and, well, it would have been right at home on the original album. It finally gets its much deserved place on the album with this reissue!
All in all, this album is pretty hard to beat, and you will enjoy it... that can be guaranteed.
1. Sweet Home Alabama
2. I Need You
3. Don't Ask Me No Questions
4. Workin' for MCA
5. Ballad of Curtis Loew
6. Swamp Music
7. Needle and the Spoon
8. Call Me the Breeze

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED - Japanese reissue of 1967 compilation is packaged in a miniature LP sleeve that's limited to 5000 copies. As emblematic of its time as of its sorcerer-like creator, 1967's Are You Experienced unleashed Jimi Hendrix onto a world in the midst of such cultural and musical shakeups that it really didn't seem as "far out" as it actually was. It wasn't just Hendrix's virtuosic skill as a pure player that was so impressive; it was, even more, the range and scope of sheer sound that he coaxed, cajoled, and ripped out of his instrument. "Purple Haze," "Manic Depression," and "I Don't Live Today" filled ears with indelible sonic images, and songs like "Foxey Lady" and "Fire" pointed the way toward a new brand of rock-charged soul music. And how about a hand for drummer Mitch Mitchell?

2. Manic Depression

While there had been McCartney-esque pop elements in Supertramp's accessible brand of art-rock from the beginning, EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS represents a definitive shift from proggier tendencies towards a more commercial approach. Coming as it did before the band's major commercial breakthrough, BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, it foreshadows that album's straightforward pop-rock approach, while still retaining a touch of the early artiness. While "Fool's Overture" has a bit of the weightiness one ordinarily associates with 1970s prog, the fragile, contemplative title track and "From Now On" betray a fondness for the softer side of '60s Britpop. "Give a Little Bit," which would become one of Supertramp's signature songs, is a sunny, acoustic-guitar-driven tune that would sound at home alongside almost any '70s Los Angeles folk-rock act. The band's big crossover was just around the corner, but all the earmarks of their breakout can be heard here.
