Tea For The Tillerman Details Distributor: Universal Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes This is a limited edition digipak. Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Alun Davies (guitar); John Rostein (violin); John Ryan (bass); Harvey Burns (drums). Producer: Paul Samwell-Smith. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Digitally remastered by Bill Levenson (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Recording information: 1970. TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN is one of Cat Stevens's finest albums, and a gem in the crown of early 1970s singer/songwriterdom. Stevens manages to have his cake and eat it too, simultaneously achieving pop accessibility and artistic relevance. While inviting rhythms (buoyed by Stevens's dynamic acoustic strumming) and pop hooks abound, the feel is decidedly gentle and spare. Apart from the occasional string section, Stevens is accompanied only by a three-piece band as he sings his introspective lyrics with appreciable fervor. While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable moments come when Stevens's lyrics venture further afield. "Father and Son" is a poignant but realistic and unsentimental portrait of the generation gap, capable of reducing any given dad or junior to tears. "On the Road to Find Out" and "But I Might Die Tonight" reflect Stevens's existential dilemmas, and the resulting spiritual quest that would later lead him to embrace the Islamic faith. The graceful beauty of arrangements, performances, and songs makes TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN a folk-rock classic. Editorial reviews ...Cat's melodies and lyrics are disarmingly, deceptively simple. He seems to fasten without effort onto tunes with a life of their own... Rolling Stone (02/18/1971)

"Cat Stevens, Teaser & The Firecat - Digipak Limited Edition CD"

Track listing 1. Wind, The 2. Rubylove 3. If I Laugh 4. Changes IV 5. How Can I Tell You 6. Tuesday's Dead 7. Morning Has Broken 8. Bitterblue 9. Moonshadow 10. Peace Train Details Contributing artists: Rick Wakeman Distributor: Universal Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes This is a limited edition digipak. Following in the tradition of his previous effort, with a similar cover design and feel, Cat continued his painful journey through life. Even then, there was a sadness linked to his happy songs such as "Moonshadow," "How Can I Tell You" and "Tuesday's Dead." Our favourite school hymn was also given the treatment - how did he manage to make such a happy verse sound so sad? The answer, as we have all seen, was in himself; he was a rare songwriter but he was mostly a very troubled soul, something he seems to have resolved through his conversion to the Muslim faith. He won, we lost him. Editorial reviews ..there is Moonshadow, a simple, unadorned song whose beauty lies in its mystery...He has an unmistakable style, a unique ability to combine sophisticated, commercial melodies with personal, almost primitive lyrics... Make Me Smile - (single version, bonus track) 25. 25 or 6 to 4 - (single version, bonus track) Chicago: Terry Kath (vocals, guitar); Robert Lamm (vocals, keyboards); Peter Cetera (vocals, bass); Walter Parazaider (winds, background vocals); Lee Loughnane (trumpet, background vocals); James Pankow (trombone); Daniel Seraphine (drums). Recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, New York; Columbia Studios, Hollywood, California in August 1969. Originally released on Columbia (KGP-24). Includes liner notes by David Wild. All tracks have been digitally remastered. CHICAGO II remains a classic album, encapsulating its time (1969) in all its tumult and glory. The Vietnam War (and the civil unrest it inspired) was still raging, the counterculture dream had not yet crashed and burned, and rock music could be taken seriously as an "art form" while still generating radio hits. Chicago, with their then-new fusion of jazz, rock, and pop, rose high on the charts, while taken seriously both in and beyond the rock-critic establishment. (Some jazz listeners respected and enjoyed Chicago as well.) Their approach had a freshness and vibrancy--"25 Or 6 To 4" was surging, dramatic, and slightly ominous; "Fancy Colours" and "Make Me Smile" were full of soulful optimism; a four-movement suite showed the band had ambition beyond the three- or four-minute pop song. To paraphrase one of Chicago's song titles, it was only the beginning. In some ways the first real Chicago album (1969's self-titled CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY had, in addition to the longer band name, a harder and somewhat more experimental sound), 1970's CHICAGO II is fairly progressive and jazzy, especially in comparison to the straight pop records the ensemble would be making in only a few short years. The album, originally a double-disc record on vinyl, is composed as four side-length suites of interconnected songs, a conceit that works better here than it often can, not least because CHICAGO II includes some of the group's best material. In particular, the hits "Make Me Smile" and "25 or 6 to 4" (incidentally, author Robert Lamm finally cleared up the mystery of that title a couple of decades later--it's about someone looking at a clock and seeing that the time is around 3:35 a.m.) are here. So is the simply perfect ballad "Colour My World," the band's first masterpiece and still perhaps their finest song ever.

Cream: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Jack Bruce (vocals, harmonica, piano, bass guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion). Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedented rock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM. The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's most fiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once again featured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of Your Love," however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. That iconic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew," and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament," however, all was far from peace and love in the Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968. Editorial reviews 4 stars out of 5 - The album was a huge, Top 5 success on both sides of the Atlantic, transforming the shape of rock music, which still draws deeply on its power-trio innovations. Uncut 3 stars out of 5 - With its perfect Martin Sharp sleeve and disciplined performances, DISRAELI GEARS was always Cream's best record. It remains so... Recording information: American Studios, Memphis, Tennessee; Groove Sound Studio, New York, New York. Not only is this Dusty's finest work, it is unanimously acknowledged as one of the great soul albums. The secret is in the production. Jerry Wexler, Tommy Dowd, and Arif Mardin enlisted the Sweet Inspirations and the best Memphis session boys for vocal support. Dusty's selection of material is exemplary, choosing songs by Randy Newman, Mann/Weill, Goffin/King, and Bacharach/David. This should have made her an international megastar; instead it scraped the US Top 100, failed to chart in the UK, and started her slow decline. It is a faultless record on which we have, thankfully, now recognized she was far too ahead of her time for her own good. Editorial reviews ...most of the songs...have a great deal of depth while presenting extremely direct and simple statements about love....Dusty sings around her material, creating music that's evocative rather than overwhelming... Rolling Stone (11/01/1969) ...It's her shining moment and just might be one of the all-time great pop albums. - Rating: A Entertainment Weekly (03/12/1999) ...her lighter-than-air voice carries the album aloft... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (10/09/1992) 3 Stars - Good - ...balances R&B and sensitive pop dramas... "Elvis Presley, G.I. Blues CD"

Special Deluxe Collector's Edition - Exclusive 28-page booklet - complete original soundtrack plus 9 additional alternate masters and out-takes. Digitally remastered. The 1997 reissue of G.I. BLUES is remixed from the original three-track master tapes, and includes extra tracks. This limited edition of the reissue includes a deluxe 28-page booklet. This is the soundtrack to Elvis' fifth movie, made in early 1960. The version of "Blue Suede Shoes" on this soundtrack was recorded in 1960 and is different from the 1956 single version.Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore, Tiny Timbrell, Neal Matthews Jr. (guitar); Jimmie Haskell (accordion); Dudley Brooks (piano); Ray Siegel (bass); D. J. Fontana, Frank Bode, Bernie Mattinson (drums); The Jordanaires (background vocals).Reissue producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon.Recorded at RCA Studios and Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California between April and May 1960. G.I. BLUES, Presley's first movie following his return from military service was, like most of his '60s movies, a light romantic comedy with plenty of musical numbers. As the decade progressed and the Presley movie formula ossified, Hollywood and Colonel Tom expended less effort finding suitable musical material for Presley to sing. Presley's earliest '60s movies, however, usually boasted strong soundtracks, and G.I. BLUES is among the best of them. Best, of course, is the Carl Perkins classic "Blue Suede Shoes," but also excellent are a "Such A Night"-like boogie entitled "Tonight Is So Right For Love," the title track, and several lovely ballads, among them "Pocket Full Of Rainbows," "Wooden Heart," and the lullaby "Big Boots." Overall, G.I. BLUES doesn't rock quite as hard as Elvis' pre-Army soundtracks, but it does demonstrate considerably more life than most of the soundtracks that followed. In fact, Presley's movies might not be the object of derision they are today had Presley's handlers worked harder at getting him material of this quality for his later films. Track listing 1. Tonight Is So Right For Love 2. What's She Really Like 3. Frankfort Special 4. Wooden Heart 5. G.I. Blues 6. Pocket Full Of Rainbows 7. Shoppin' Around 8. Big Boots 9. Didja Ever 10. Editorial reviews ...captures over two discs the full range of this astonishing quintet: letter-perfect Elmore James shuffles, heartfelt Buddy Holly Tributes and epic hard-rock originals....Green was the most melodic and understated of guitar heroes... Rolling Stone (12/26/1996) ...this two-CD collection of radio performances makes a convincing case for the Mac as...one of the greatest bands of all time, period. Between Green's breathtaking command of soul, Kirwan's way with an old-timey melody, and Spencer's apparent ability to imitate anyone...this was one versatile bunch... Musician (08/01/1996) 8 (out of 10) - ...at the peak of the Jeremy Spencer/Peter Green-led line-up, they were probably the crown of the British blues boom, arguably even better than Cream....there's still a grounding in Chicago blues styles and some almost ethereal guitar licks from Green... NME (10/28/1995) ...the only real genius of the British blues movement, a man who could write, sing, and play the blues as if his life depended on it... Dirty Linen (06/01/1996)

Great Balls Of Fire Fleetwood Mac: Peter Green, Danny Kirwan (vocals, guitar); Jeremy Spencer (vocals, slide guitar, piano); John McVie (vocals, bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums). Recorded live at The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California on January 25, 1969. This is part of Rykodisc's Dinky Dawson's Live Archive The Dinky Who? series. Fleetwood Mac became a particularly formidable beast when Danny Kirwan joined its ranks in 1968. The Mac was already nominally a twin-guitar line-up, but Jeremy Spencer showed little inclination to perform on anyone's material other than his own variations on a theme by Elmore James and his regular rock & roll spot in the live set. With the arrival of Kirwan, Peter Green had a second guitarist with whom he could interact as well as someone to relieve the songwriting burden. This lineup's live prowess had already been amply illustrated by the extensive material recorded over several sets at the Boston Tea Party a month earlier, which can be heard in its entirety on THE BOSTON BOX. However, this concert, recorded in Los Angeles on January 25th 1969, is notable for including some different material. The group's then-current single, "Albatross," shares the spotlight with a song the Mac did not record in the studio, Jimmy Rogers' "Lemon Squeezer," and "Before the Beginning" offers a preview of the band's next studio album, THEN PLAY ON. "Before the Beginning" is the set's highlight, although "Something Inside of Me" and "Need Your Love So Bad" offer strong competition. Editorial reviews 3 stars (out of 5) - ...top-class blues, sophisticated and intuitive, and startlingly good....lifts the curtain on what was still to come. Q (08/01/1999)
