Cleaning Windows ENLIGHTMENT - Its title seems squarely in the pilgrim's camp, where much of Van Morrison's '80s music dwells, but 1990's Enlightenment offsets new glimpses of Morrison's oft-sought Avalon ("Avalon of the Heart") with darker confessions of human frailty and challenged faith. The opening "Real Real Gone" belies its hard-charging R&B verve (a welcome return to high-octane soul after his relatively becalmed, then-recent work) with admissions of weakness, and even the lyrical title song reveals confusion more than salvation. A few years later, such defeats might have prompted one of his crankier outbursts, but this set is brightened by the joyful reminiscences of "Youth of 1,000 Summers" and the epic "In the Days Before Rock 'n' Roll," in which Morrison's declamatory fervor is matched by poet Paul Durcan. The latter song is a gloriously apt Morrison moment, exulting in Little Richard as though he walked the same astral plane as William Blake--which, in Morrison's world, is exactly the point Track Listings 1. Real Real Gone 2. Enlightenment 3. So Quiet in Here 4. Avalon of the Heart 5. See Me Through 6. Youth of 1,000 Summers 7. In the Days Before Rock 'n' Roll - Van Morrison, Durcan, Paul 8. Start All Over Again 9. She's My Baby 10. Memories THE HEALING GAME - Cranky, sly, dour, ecstatic, Van Morrison treads his own stubborn pilgrimage through blues, jazz, R&B, Celtic rays, and their ineffable junction in his own music. This 1997 album distills the renewed focus on blues and jazz sources that shaped much of his '90s work, noteworthy for its concision--this is one of his leanest, least expository sets in recent years, paring the arrangements down to the guts of the generally fine material. "Rough God Goes Riding" kicks off, an archetypal Morrison anthem that could have fit snugly on Moondance, no mean achievement after all these years, yet consistent with this marathon runner's ability to turn up vivid images and engaging grooves. There's a decided gospel fervor to the interplay of the frontman's salty vocals and his soulful choral partners, never more so than on the sublime title song Track Listings 1. Rough God Goes Riding 2. Fire in the Belly 3. This Weight 4. Waiting Game 5. Piper at the Gates of Dawn 6. Burning Ground 7. It Once Was My Life 8. Sometimes We Cry 9. If You Love Me 10. The Healing Game NO GURU, NO METHOD, NO TEACHER, - Longtime Van Morrison fans may prefer the Belfast bard's tougher, emphatically R&B-driven work, yet it's his lusher, mid-'80s output that helped him consolidate the scrappy gains made in the prior decades. The once-heightened polarity between the earthy and the ethereal seemed muted on albums that traded in a softer-focus, romantic mysticism mirrored by the expanded scale of Morrison's band and arrangements, and left room for him to dabble in instrumental compositions or his renewed love of sax and piano. No Method, No Guru, No Teacher proves among the more durable, convincing chapters in this era, carrying a now-familiar array of symbolic touchstones (the Celtic legacy of "Tir Na Nog" or an extended instrumental allusion to a hymn set to William Blake's musings on England) and offering two of Morrison's better meditations on redemption, "In the Garden" and "A Town Called Paradise," which echoes the fevered waltz-time trance of "Astral Weeks" itself Track Listings 1. Got to Go Back 2. Oh the Warn Feeling 3. Foreign Window 4. A Town Called Paradise 5. In the Garden 6. Tir Na Nog 7. Here Comes the Knight - Van Morrison, Berns, Bert 8. Thanks for the Information 9. One Irish Rover 10. Ivory Tower A NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO - The Belfast Cowboy is one of the most mercurial and gloriously inconsistent live performers of his generation, as notorious for his onstage sulks and autopilot off-nights as he is justly celebrated for incandescent live sets that burn in the memory. This 1994 double-CD set, Van Morrison's third solo live album, doesn't surpass either his mid-'70s triumph, It's Too Late to Stop Now, or his Belfast homecoming on 1984's Live at the Grand Opera House, but a generous set and a typically taut, virtuosic stage band are tempting inducements, as is a repertoire that mixes both old and more recent Morrison originals with some shrewd covers. With Georgie Fame his staunch right hand (on organ and backing vocals), and his overexposed band singers, Brian Kennedy and James Hunter, Morrison digs into some particularly ripe medleys, interpolating King Pleasure, Sly Stone, T-Bone Walker, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Witherspoon, Gene Vincent, Roy Orbison, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Doc Pomus along the way.
