This DOUBLE VINYL collection is the soundtrack from the 1978 ill-fated movie. Pushing the visuals aside, the collection includes a majority of the top selling classic rock artists performing their classic hit singles that dominated the airwaves in the 1970's.
Walter Brecker and Donald Fagen/Steely Dan are represented with their newly recorded title track that opens the collection and reprise that closes out the second disc. Their first major chart success, the relentless "Do It Again," is also included.
The Eagles are represented as a group on "Life In The Fast Lane," from the "Hotel California" album, while there are 2 solo members with individual tracks: Joe Walsh does a parody of fortune and fame on the tongue and cheek track, "Life's Been Good." Randy Meisner performs on "Bad Man."
One of the most popular female vocalists of the 1970's was Linda Ronstadt. She has 2 live performances on the album, which she also performed in the film, "Tumbling Dice," (a Rolling Stones track) and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."
Boston's feel good debut single, "More Than A Feeling" is on the soundtrack, which was extracted from their multiplatinum eponyomous debut that sold more copies that any debut album during its inception. Queen rocks with their stadium anthum, "We Will Rock You." Steve Miller soars on "Fly Like An Eagle." Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's trademark sound is heard on "Breakdown." Lou Gramm's high pitched vocals are evident on the track "Cold As Ice." The Doobie Brothers "It Keeps You Runnin'" is also included in this important rock and roll collection.
The soundtrack also sports Jimmy Buffet's electric performance on "Livingston Saturday Night." Folker and adult contemporary stylist, Dan Fogelberg delivers one of his most emotionally wrenching ballads with "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler," while New York's own, Billy Joel sings his trademark ballad and grammy award winning song of the year, "Just The Way You Are." James Taylor is represented with the mid-tempo love song,"Your Smiling Face" and jazz musician Boz Scaggs performs his up tempo signature track "Lido Shuffle," that originaly appeared on his "Silk Degrees" album.
This collection brings the listener back to a more innocent time in rock and roll (if that was possible), when the emphasis was primarily on the music itself and the live performances. A snapshot of Zappa's 1984 band, this live album showcases the pared-down group's energy and ability on a set of concert favorites (with a few special oddities thrown in for good measure). The opening version of the instrumental "Zoot Allures" is one of the best takes on that song released on CD, and the closing "Whippin' Post" finds Zappa trading guitar licks with his son Dweezil. "Does Humor Belong in Music?"....like, you had to ask? This live album of highlights from the 1984 tour was originally released in Europe only, and has now been made available here with a spiffy new Cal Schenkel cover replacing the crummy graphics of the import (for you hardcore collectors, the performances are totally different from the ones on the video of the same name).
The material is a good cross-section of FZ's sets at the time, opening with a majestic "Zoot Allures" and moving through the topical "Hot-Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel" (making its recorded debut); and the instrumental solo showpiece "Let's Move to Cleveland," plus a discreet bit of doggerel called "Cock-Suckers' Ball" that's appeared nowhere else (FZ learned this one off a bootleg tape by a '50s doo-wop outfit). For the finale, there's an encore version of "Whippin' Post" featuring Dweezil on guitar. This was the last song from the last show of what Zappa intended to be his last tour, though he hit the road one more time in 1988.
PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS (2CD'S) - You wanted more old Mothers, you got 'em: This "archival" double CD, originally released in 1992, features performances and assorted dialogue snippets from the early 70s version of The Mothers, recorded onstage at NYC's Fillmore East, UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and The Rainbow Theatre in London, and offstage in various locales. This was the Flo & Eddie version of the band, with the ex-Turtles lending their quintessential California harmonies to some of the Mothers' funniest moments as well as their most straight-ahead rockers.
Of special interest is the John Lennon & Yoko Ono guest appearance at The Fillmore in 1971. It had been Lennon's first onstage appearance in nearly two years and his last for a long while, performing the blues standard "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)" and a long jam during which Yoko was tied up in a sack. This performance was heard in excerpted form on Lennon/Ono's album SOMETIME IN NEW YORK CITY; now it can finally be heard in context.

THE LOST EPISODES - Frank Zappa personally compiled this new Rykodisc collection of studio rarities, alternate versions, and unreleased tracks as one of his last projects -- not only as a way of paying tribute to many of the people who had affected his life but also as a gesture of appreciation to his fans. Assembled as a kind of after-hours project over 18 months in 1992 and 1993, THE LOST EPISODES includes 30 tracks spanning 1958-1972, with short detours to 1980 and 1992. Tracks of particular note include "Ronny's Booger Story" and "Kenny's Booger Story," which shed new light on the (ahem) incidents which inspired "Let's Make the Water Turn Black,” an early, jazz samba arrangement of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance,” ”Lil’ Clanton Shuffle,” a blues jam left off 1969’s HOT RATS which features Sugar Cane Harris on violin, original recordings of such Zappa gems as “RDNZL” and “Inca Roads,” the 1980 single version of "I Don't Wanna Get Drafted,” and five tracks featuring the vocal stylings of Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) including one of the earliest Zappa-Beefheart studio collaborations, “Tiger Roach.” TLE’s cover art is by Gabor Csupo, founder of Klasky-Csupo Animation, the people who originally animated The Simpsons and now bring you Duckman and Rugrats. Packaged in a deluxe slipcase, the album is accompanied by a 52-page booklet with extensive liner notes by music journalist Rip Rense, including detailed commentary about each song derived from interviews with Zappa, engineer Spencer Chrislu, and a plethora of FZ's musical associates including Vliet, Ruth Underwood, Terry Bozzio, and James "Motorhead" Sherwood. Both Rense and Csupo contributed to this package at Zappa's request.

HAVE I OFFENDED SOMEONE- Although Zappa did not provide notes with the Offended? master tape, this compilation could be considered his idea of a "Best Of," and indeed, this collection features many of the tunes that first attracted legions of fans to his music. The aforementioned "Valley Girl," with vocals by daughter Moon Unit, was Zappa’s highest charting US single ever, reaching #32 in Billboard and earned Grammy nominations for Moon and FZ (his second), while the accompanying album, 1982’s Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, reached #23. But despite the commercial acclaim of the single and album, Zappa’s ironic sensibilities were lost on the public and the media. Said Zappa in an interview with Josef Woodard, "The worst thing about that record is the fact that nobody really listened to it... The whole coverage of the song barely mentioned what the song was really saying, that these people are really airheads." Nevertheless, the song’s success triggered a movement of sorts, with "Valley Girl" T-shirts, lunch boxes, cosmetics, and offers for a TV series and a film (eventually made without Zappa’s participation). A few years earlier, Zappa’s 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti (which spawned the US hit "Dancin’ Fool," a depiction of the male of the species in a disco frenzy) also contained two of his most razor-sharp and funny portrayals, "Jewish Princess" and "Bobby Brown Goes Down," both of which are included on Have I Offended Someone? Both songs sparked controversy. "Jewish Princess" brought a protest from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, who asked the FCC to ban it from radio airplay. Zappa said the song was satire, threatened to sue, and refused to apologize. He’s quoted in The Real Frank Zappa Book as saying, "...unlike The Unicorn, such creatures do exist—and deserve to be commemorated with their own special opus." DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC - Originally released only in Europe without permission, Does Humor Belong In Music? was reworked by Zappa and released with much more material on CD. A snapshot of Zappa's 1984 band, this live album showcases the pared-down group's energy and ability on a set of concert favorites (with a few special oddities thrown in for good measure). The opening version of the instrumental "Zoot Allures" is one of the best takes on that song released on CD, and the closing "Whippin' Post" finds Zappa trading guitar licks with his son Dweezil. Often overshadowed by some of his other touring ensembles, this group--featuring Chad Wackerman, Scott Thunes, Bobby Martin, Allan Zavod and the dual frontmen of Ike Willis and Ray White-is distinctive and talented, and their performances on songs like "Let's Move to Cleveland" and "What's New in Baltimore" are essential to any Zappa collection. --Andrew Boscardin

"Does Humor Belong in Music?"....like, you had to ask? This live album of highlights from the 1984 tour was originally released in Europe only, and has now been made available here with a spiffy new Cal Schenkel cover replacing the crummy graphics of the import (for you hardcore collectors, the performances are totally different from the ones on the video of the same name).
The material is a good cross-section of FZ's sets at the time, opening with a majestic "Zoot Allures" and moving through the topical "Hot-Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel" (making its recorded debut); and the instrumental solo showpiece "Let's Move to Cleveland," plus a discreet bit of doggerel called "Cock-Suckers' Ball" that's appeared nowhere else (FZ learned this one off a bootleg tape by a '50s doo-wop outfit). For the finale, there's an encore version of "Whippin' Post" featuring Dweezil on guitar. This was the last song from the last show of what Zappa intended to be his last tour, though he hit the road one more time in 1988.
PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS (2CD'S) - You wanted more old Mothers, you got 'em: This "archival" double CD, originally released in 1992, features performances and assorted dialogue snippets from the early 70s version of The Mothers, recorded onstage at NYC's Fillmore East, UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and The Rainbow Theatre in London, and offstage in various locales. This was the Flo & Eddie version of the band, with the ex-Turtles lending their quintessential California harmonies to some of the Mothers' funniest moments as well as their most straight-ahead rockers.
Of special interest is the John Lennon & Yoko Ono guest appearance at The Fillmore in 1971. It had been Lennon's first onstage appearance in nearly two years and his last for a long while, performing the blues standard "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)" and a long jam during which Yoko was tied up in a sack. This performance was heard in excerpted form on Lennon/Ono's album SOMETIME IN NEW YORK CITY; now it can finally be heard in context.

THE LOST EPISODES - Frank Zappa personally compiled this new Rykodisc collection of studio rarities, alternate versions, and unreleased tracks as one of his last projects -- not only as a way of paying tribute to many of the people who had affected his life but also as a gesture of appreciation to his fans. Assembled as a kind of after-hours project over 18 months in 1992 and 1993, THE LOST EPISODES includes 30 tracks spanning 1958-1972, with short detours to 1980 and 1992. Tracks of particular note include "Ronny's Booger Story" and "Kenny's Booger Story," which shed new light on the (ahem) incidents which inspired "Let's Make the Water Turn Black,” an early, jazz samba arrangement of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance,” ”Lil’ Clanton Shuffle,” a blues jam left off 1969’s HOT RATS which features Sugar Cane Harris on violin, original recordings of such Zappa gems as “RDNZL” and “Inca Roads,” the 1980 single version of "I Don't Wanna Get Drafted,” and five tracks featuring the vocal stylings of Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) including one of the earliest Zappa-Beefheart studio collaborations, “Tiger Roach.” TLE’s cover art is by Gabor Csupo, founder of Klasky-Csupo Animation, the people who originally animated The Simpsons and now bring you Duckman and Rugrats. Packaged in a deluxe slipcase, the album is accompanied by a 52-page booklet with extensive liner notes by music journalist Rip Rense, including detailed commentary about each song derived from interviews with Zappa, engineer Spencer Chrislu, and a plethora of FZ's musical associates including Vliet, Ruth Underwood, Terry Bozzio, and James "Motorhead" Sherwood. Both Rense and Csupo contributed to this package at Zappa's request.

HAVE I OFFENDED SOMEONE- Although Zappa did not provide notes with the Offended? master tape, this compilation could be considered his idea of a "Best Of," and indeed, this collection features many of the tunes that first attracted legions of fans to his music. The aforementioned "Valley Girl," with vocals by daughter Moon Unit, was Zappa’s highest charting US single ever, reaching #32 in Billboard and earned Grammy nominations for Moon and FZ (his second), while the accompanying album, 1982’s Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, reached #23. But despite the commercial acclaim of the single and album, Zappa’s ironic sensibilities were lost on the public and the media. Said Zappa in an interview with Josef Woodard, "The worst thing about that record is the fact that nobody really listened to it... The whole coverage of the song barely mentioned what the song was really saying, that these people are really airheads." Nevertheless, the song’s success triggered a movement of sorts, with "Valley Girl" T-shirts, lunch boxes, cosmetics, and offers for a TV series and a film (eventually made without Zappa’s participation). A few years earlier, Zappa’s 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti (which spawned the US hit "Dancin’ Fool," a depiction of the male of the species in a disco frenzy) also contained two of his most razor-sharp and funny portrayals, "Jewish Princess" and "Bobby Brown Goes Down," both of which are included on Have I Offended Someone? Both songs sparked controversy. "Jewish Princess" brought a protest from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, who asked the FCC to ban it from radio airplay. Zappa said the song was satire, threatened to sue, and refused to apologize. He’s quoted in The Real Frank Zappa Book as saying, "...unlike The Unicorn, such creatures do exist—and deserve to be commemorated with their own special opus." ALL THINGS MUST PASS - WITH A LOT OF BONUS TRACKS - On the heels of "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," George Harrison must have felt he had little to prove as a songwriter. But unfortunately for him, those stellar efforts were in service of a band whose main songwriters were named Lennon and McCartney. But when the Beatles partnership dissolved in 1970, Harrison wasted little time in showcasing the body of work he'd accumulated the previous two years--or in trying to take Abbey Road's lavish production ethos to its next logical plateau. The resulting late-1970 double-album (originally released with a third bonus disc of instrumental "Apple Jams," which are still included here) was perhaps the most Beatles-sounding post-Fabs effort, a far cry from the two quirky solo efforts he'd undertaken while still in the band (the authentically Indian Wonderwall Music and the Moog wank-fest Electronic Sounds). Tracks like "Beware of Darkness," "All Things Must Pass," "The Art of Dying," "Isn't It a Pity," and the hit "My Sweet Lord" gave the album a strong spiritual center, balanced by the light-hearted "Apple Scruffs," "If Not For You," and the Bob Dylan collaboration "I'd Have You Anytime." Phil Spector's mammoth, orchestrally laced production took his trademark "wall of sound" to impressive new levels, all the more remarkable in light of the biting, minimalist work he was collaborating with John Lennon on, virtually simultaneously. Far and away Harrison's masterpiece; he'd have been wise to have saved a few of these songs for a rainy day.

BRAINWASHED - Completed by George Harrison's son Dhani and Jeff Lynne after the ex-Beatle succumbed to a long illness in November 2001, Brainwashed is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years, Harrison finds rewarding ways here to reconcile bitter assessments of the material world (the title track) with more fleshy concerns, as his jaunty take on the Arlen-Koehler chestnut "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ably demonstrates. Pushing the singer's distinctive dry voice to the forefront, and with Harrison's trademark slide guitar riffs as sinewy as ever, Lynne's showcase production is mostly spot-on and refreshingly restrained, while Dhani brings his own fresh, touchingly personal insights to the record. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the album's spiritual benediction, a touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever.

I LOVE "33 1/3"-it's easily one of my two very favorite
George Harrison solo albums.Why do I love it so much? It has fantastic songs,
great lyrics and some exciting soul and funk influences. The
opening "Woman Don't Cry For Me" is a bass and clavinet-led
funk number with a blues arrangment featuring the wonderful
Billy Preston's keyboard work. Two fantastic,Beatle-like pop
numbers like the joke-of-court-proceeding "This Song" and
the instant classic "Crackerbox Palace". Most stunning though
are the contemporary soft soul tributes first to Smokey Robinson
called "Pure Smokey" (perhapes Harrison wrote it for Smokey-it
does sound like him) and the tranquil and beautiful soul ballad
"Learning how To Love You",a great way to chose any album.In
between these tunes like "It's What You Value",Dear One" and
"Beautful Girl" are just the kind of clever toss-off's that
Harrison was knocking out at this point. Anyone who hears this
today will be very saddned he is no longer with us.

GETZ/GILBERTO - MFSL Factory Sealed Gold CD
Two names spring to mind upon hearing the words jazz and samba , namely those of Stan Getz and João Gilberto. But really one should be thinking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who, with his composition from 1958 Chega de saudade, first created the type of Brazilian samba that is known today as bossa nova. It was with one of Jobim’s songs, Desafinado, that the bossa nova began its triumphant conquest of the USA. In 1962, Stan Getz made the work widely known when he recorded the number, together with Charlie Byrd, on his album Jazz Samba. It was this recording, along with Focus (1961), which was responsible for Getz’s definitive comeback in the USA at that same time. Jazz Samba opened the floodgates to a new musical vogue, and although cool jazz had been swept aside by hard bop, the reserved and melancholy touch of Getz’s style once again became all the rage. It is really not at all surprising, therefore, that the album Getz/Gilberto, recorded in March 1963 for the Verve label, was a winner right from the very start, bringing together as it did the two godfathers of samba Jobim and Gilberto with their American brother Getz. This music is like a pleasantly warm bath whose water is perfumed with essential oil, or like a mild summer night bathed in golden moonlight. The songs, all of them now classics in their own right, are filled with the joy of life, peace and harmony.

The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat.
Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, minimal arrangements and production ensure that GETZ/GILBERTO will never date, age, or tire. It's a perfect album.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF UNDERGROUND RADIO brings back the early days of progressive FM rock with live transcriptions. All artists were featured on the upstart FM radio show--on San Francisco's KSAN--hosted by the legendary Tom "Big Daddy" Donahue.
This is not a traditional album. Rather, it is a recreated hour of Donahue's "fabled" nightly show when "underground" FM radio was in its inception. It uses master tapes and transcriptions to assemble a broadcast from sign-on to sign-off.
In addition, there are actual news spots, commercials and declarations evoking San Francisco from 1968-1972.

Analog Virgin Vinyl. "Head Hunters" was a pivotal point in Herbie Hancock’s career bringing him into the vanguard of jazz fusion. Hancock had pushed avant-garde boundaries on his own albums and with Miles Davis, but he had never devoted himself to the groove as he did on "Head Hunters". "Chameleon" "Watermelon Man" "Shy" and "Vain Melter" are all songs that are 6 ½ minutes to 16 minutes long.

This MFSL LP has a special static free, dust free inner sleeve and heavy-duty protective packaging.
This LP has been Out of Print for 25 years and a bonafide audiophile‘s collectible.
