Thanks to the success of his first LIVE AT THE APPOLO LP from 1963, James Brown and the famed Harlem theater were all but synonymous in the sixties. This 3-disc box set contains over 50 tracks, all remastered. It also includes a 64-page booklet containing extensive liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin and Bill Thompson, complete recording notation and a U.S. release discography. The set spans a period from an early Marty Balin solo recording in 1962 through a live recording of "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short" from 1972.
If any group deserves a box set career retrospective, it's the Airplane, a great band that post-punk critics have scandalously undervalued. Sorry, but the Airplane was not--repeat, not--just a bunch of stoned hippies singing innocuous little ditties about flower power. Rather, they were one of the most ferocious live acts of their day, terrific songwriters capable of both tender ballads and squalling, almost atonal rockers, and they had attitude to burn, which is a roundabout way of saying that they had more in common with the punks that followed them than those punks were prepared to admit.
In any case, this set is not strictly speaking a greatest-hits package, although just about every important Airplane song is represented; it is LOVES YOU's smart idea, however, to present most of them in previously unreleased live versions. This is a particularly good move, given that the Airplane's studio albums, up to and including VOLUNTEERS, were consistently among the worst produced of any major band of their era, and while no live recording really does justice to the Airplane's monumental concert sound, the ones here come close enough. Essential listening.

John Kahn is a fantastic bassist who provides an interesting contrast to the Dead's bass player, Phil Lesh. His playing helps bring out plenty of sweet lyrical magic from Jerry's guitar. Jerry Garcia's Live at Keystone is a side project with Merl Saunders and is one of his best individual performances .Highly recommended.
For most of the 1970s, keyboardist Merl Saunders was Jerry Garcia's main musical foil away from his main band, allowing the Grateful Dead icon a chance to really broaden his horizons. Dates from 1973 at San Francisco's Keystone with bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt have yielded three CDs' worth of material--Volume 1 and Keystone Encores augment this particularly strong set. Here the quartet tackles a pair of rollicking rockabilly numbers, a blues staple, a wonderfully touching, soulful ballad, and the standard "My Funny Valentine," the latter delivered in a rather exploratory style. --Marc Greilsamer

"Jimi Hendrix, The Complete of PPX Recordings - Factory Sealed 6 CD OBI Box Set - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"
In 1997, SPV Records in Germany released six volumes titled The Authentic PPX Studio Recordings.
During two studio sessions in 1965 and 1967, plus a live set at George's Club in Hackensack, New Jersey, Jimi Hendrix recorded tracks with Curtis Knight. Under contract to, and under the direction of producer Ed Chalpin, these studio sessions at PPX Studios in New York became infamous. Not only for being one of the earliest known studio sessions featuring Hendrix as a lead performer, but for the legal embattlement the sessions created.
The tapes have been released on various album combinations over three dozen times, as Chalpin continuously licenses them to record companies throughout the world. "As long as there are record companies who want to distribute this material in their market, I will license it to them accordingly," Chalpin once indicated, noting that each of those companies is only supposed to distribute the product in the country they are licensed.
But, according to CBH, the Knight material has never before been officially licensed on compact disc. That is, until now. Of course, we can document numerous pseudo-legitimate releases with some of the Hendrix- Knight material included, but certainly, this is the most comprehensive compilation of such material to date.
Chalpin has licensed the tapes to CBH Records in Germany. Engineers Kalle Trapp and Rainer Hansel went in and recut, re-edited and remastered the material into a six volume set. Some songs have been remixed, some mixed down to only include Jimi's guitar and vocals. Others have been completely re-edited, cut and spliced in such a way that choruses are repeated, verses are re-arranged, and guitar parts are extended. "Butchered," say some; "creative" argue others. Either way, we do get some new material. We get plenty of old material that's been cleaned up and made more presentable and listenable. And, we get the doctored tracks, which will always get challenged in the Hendrix circles.
Hopes ran high when news came of the official German release of The Authentic PPX Studio Recordings that maybe this time we'd have these Hendrix-Knight sessions presented in a sympathetic context with perhaps some detailed liner notes and new information to shed light on these sessions. Dream on!
Let's start with the liner notes, claiming these recordings are available for the first time on CD. Well, what about Historic Hendrix and Prologue, amongst others, which have been around for ages. The liner notes by Gitti Gulden may as well have been written by Chalpin himself as yet again we have a very rose-tinted version of events where he appears to be the innocent part who has been badly done to over the years.
The most interested part is the line-up details which lists: "Drums: Johnny Star. All other instruments played by Jimi Hendrix. Lead Vocals: Curtis Knight. Additional Vocals: Jimi Hendrix." Johnny Star's name has only appeared in historical references previously as a suggested engineer. Noted session drummer Bernard Purdie has made claim he was involved with some of these sessions. And, as far as Jimi playing all instruments on all the tracks, there's enough historical evidence to discount this statement as total rubbish. Even the photos included in some of the booklets show additional musicians in the studio.
In the original SPV releases, each disc comes with an eight page booklet. Graphic continuity brings this six volume set into a unified perspective. The six covers feature different photos from the Gered Mankowitz photo archives. Each inside cover features two different rare (some never before published) photos of Hendrix during the Curtis Knight period and sessions. On the Nippon Crown box set, the SPV covers are re-used on the individual discs. Each disc comes in a cardboard slipsleeve. A 16-page booklet, encapsulating the same pictures and text that appeared in the SPV releases, is included. The six discs are then encased in a thin cardboard "box", another Mankowitz shot used on the metallic-ink four-color cover.
Most of the material has been previously released on numerous titles, the German Astan and Babylon labels providing in vinyl versions the prominent portion of the material presented here.

While Coltrane's versions of Billy Eckstine's "I Want To Talk About You" and Fred Lacey's "Theme For Ernie" are pretty much straight ballad performances, his bold, powerful style brings out the soulful feel of these two beautiful, reflective melodies.
The closing track--a wild rendition of Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby," ends the album on a high note, with Coltrane and Garland racing through this complicated tune with remarkable precision and focus. Superbly recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, SOULTRANE is a true jazz classic and quite simply one of Coltrane's finest albums.

The late '50s were tough on Judy Garland, but this live recording, cut on April 23, 1961, at Carnegie Hall, would (rightfully) bring the legendary icon back into the spotlight. Live would go on to win five Grammys, be Garland's bestselling record, and confirm that, yes, on certain levels, she still had it. Her vocals are as strong as ever on these tunes, and Garland has fun with an audience obviously enraptured by her charms. She's self-deprecating where necessary--on "You Go to My Head" she "forgets" the lyrics but pretends to improvise. Mostly she just shines, especially on tunes she made famous, such as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Stormy Weather," and "Over the Rainbow." Double Gold CD contains 26 songs. .
For this reissue, the concert has been remastered in a splendid 24-karat gold audiophile format based only on the original masters. It also contains the artwork, liner notes, and photo montage from the original album, as well as a new essay on Garland by Scott Schechter.

VOLUME ONE - This live date broken into two volumes has never sounded better. Upon its original release, critics and fans alike marveled at the recording quality and the moderate amount of audience noise that can distract from crucial moments of music. Recorded just two years after he moved to New York, leader Burrell decided to eschew a small ensemble and super-size the bandstand. During this period, between contributions for Blue Note and Prestige, he may have been the most recorded name guitarist in jazz and definitely had his pick of east cost players to choose from. His personnel choices for this show were inspired. After asking label-mate Louis Smith to bring his trumpet, he made an interesting choice in going with twin tenors in Tina Brooks and Junior Cook. Duke Jordan and Bobby Timmons split time behind the piano for the two different sets, while Sam Jones and Art Blakey handled bass and drums, respectively, straight through. Mastered and cut from the original two-track master tapes using all-tube tape electronics and cutting system, allowing Bernie Grundman to extract every nuance from the tapes which adds to the magic of this Rudy Van Gelder recording.

1969 was a fairly important year, it saw the release of Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats", Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" and Caravan's "If I could do it, I would do it all over you again". This was the year where jazz and rock came together with an unheard of intensity. The Court of the Crimson King was such an album. The opening track: "21st Century Schizoid Man", just blasts through the speakers with a relentless horn section and searing guitar played by Robert Fripp. The production on this record is remarkable, as the you can also hear the timbre of the drums clearly coming through horn riffs and the guitar leads. Gregg Lake's Voice has some distortion, this was a protest song, and it was loud and angry. Great Stuff if you want to rattle your neighbours, I wanted to play it at the start of the millenium, but I was not at home to do so. The sentiments of the lyrics of this song, somehow still ring true today. The energy and intensity of this track has been unsurpassed, it is molten! .
This track is followed by the delicate "I talk to the wind". A nice relaxing number with some nice flute by Mel Collins. A complete contrast to the power of the horns in the preceding track.
Then comes "Epitaph": This has be the first funeral march in rock music. This brings home how important Mel Collins was to this album, as his horn work seems to carry the melody, it is played with feeling.
"Moon Child" opens with a mystical song. Beautifully sung by Greg Lake with a pleasant melody. This gives way to some free-form music. The albums just pushes at the boundaries, it still does to the present day.
"In the Court of the Crimson King". This is the title track. Classical themes are explored in this as much as jazz themes were explored in the opening track. It is a track that develops and again, Greg Lake's velvet voice carries the song really well. It takes you to the realm of imagination of fantasy.
It's a great album that has not dated, buy it, but I do not recommend that you play "21st Schizoid Man" soon after any dental work!.

On her last outing Madonna wowed both critics and the public alike. By brilliantly combining electronic beats with strong melodies on Ray of Light, Madonna took pop music in a bold, new direction. Madonna's new album Music picks up where Ray of Light left off, but ultimately this album will not be remembered as adventurous as its predecessor. Madonna sticks with the same formula that made Ray of Light a critic's darling, and that's certainly not a bad thing.
It would be easy to be misled by Music's first single and title track. The single Music, currently in heavy airplay on radio stations around the country, is a quirky, fun little number with simple, easy-to-digest lyrics. It brings to mind some of the happy-go-lucky music of Madonna's past. Music the album, however, sometimes gets deeply personal and strangely moving at times. It is older, wiser Madonna that we find here, one we can relate to and empathize with. "Many miles, many roads I have traveled, fallen down on the way," sings the one-time Material Girl on "I Deserve It." Suddenly Madonna doesn't seem so much like a glamour icon here as much as a world-weary soul-searcher.
Style-wise the album is still punctuated heavily with electronic loops and beats. "Impressive Instant" is an incredible sonic whirlwind, and "Runaway Lover" is headed straight to the dance floor. There is however more use of acoustical guitar here though than on Ray of Light. For the first few seconds of "Don't Tell Me," you would think you were listening to a John Denver song until staccato beats punctuate the song to a magnificent effect. There is heavy use of vocal manipulation (ala Cher's "Believe") throughout the album. Sometimes this is distracting, as in "Nobody's Perfect," a beautiful ballad that suffers from over-production.
On Music, Madonna continues here collaboration with electronic-mastermind William Orbit, as well as bringing in French artist Mirwais to produce some songs. On this album though, we the audience are more familiar with electronica thanks to Ray of Light, so nothing seems as new and shocking as than on that album. Most of the songs are heavily produced with beats and synthesizers, but they rarely mask the underlying melodies and emotion.
All in all, Music is another highly accomplished effort from Madonna, and one of her best albums. High-tech wizardry aside, this is still very much a Madonna album- sometimes light, sometimes challenging, but always entertaining. "Selling out is not my thing," she sings on "Gone," and she hasn't. More a continuation of her foray into electronica than a new effort, this album makes a nice bookend to Ray of Light, and it certainly deserves a spot in your LP collection.
