ABRAXAS, the second album by the original (and arguably most powerful) Santana line-up, proved the band's commercial breakthrough. The album's contains two of the group's biggest hits, "Black Magic Woman," a slinky, smooth-edged interpretation of the song written by Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green, and their take on Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va," which injects Carlos Santana's stinging guitar leads into a surging salsa groove. The band's unique, genre-blurring approach makes these singles--and everything else here--unlike anything that had been heard before.
The opener, "Singing Winds, Crying Beasts," showcases Carlos Santana's passionate, soulful six-string mastery over a drifting, psychedelic backdrop. The album ranges in feel, encompassing furiously propulsive jams ("Se A Cabo"), low-key Brazilian grooves ("Samba Para Ti"), and jazzy instrumentals ("Incident at Neshabur"). All the elements that made Santana's debut dazzling--roiling, polyrhythmic percussion, dense, pancultural influences, virtuoso guitar work--are here--sharpened and painted with the rich, heady sound of late-'60s San Francisco (Santana was just as exploratory and innovative as their hometown cohorts the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane). This was Santana’s debut LP and was a powerful and original masterpiece. When Santana arrived on the San Francisco scene in 1968, the Grateful Dead’s freeform antics were already legendary. But, Santana was a jam band of another order fueled by Latin rhythms, blues, bee bop, and straight ahead rock. Having set the audience at the 1969 Woodstock Festival on its collective ear, the band did the same for the nation with its self-titled debut released later than summer.
Songs such as Evil Ways - Jingo and Soul Sacrifice contain extraordinary ensemble playing powered by congas and timbales and topped by the gripping human cry of Carlos Santana’s guitar. A rock classic cover to cover!!

WELCOME - Japanese limited edition pressing has been remastered and includes a bonus track. Packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Welcome, the band's fifth album and its first with the new lineup, was a very ambitious affair and was regarded by traditional fans of Santana with even more strangeness than its two predecessors. However, issued as it was at the end of 1973, after Miles had won a Grammy for Bitches Brew and after Weather Report, Return to Forever, and Seventh House had begun to win audiences from the restless pool of rock fans, Santana began to attract the attention of critics as well as jazz fans seeking something outside of the soul-jazz and free jazz realms for sustenance. The John Coltrane influence that inspired the Santana/John McLaughlin pairing on Love Devotion Surrender echoes here on 'Going Home', the album's opening track, arranged by Coltrane's widow, pianist and harpist Alice. The deeper jazz fusion/Latin funk edge is articulated on the track 'Samba De Sausalito', and to a much more accessible degree on 'Love, Devotion & Surrender'. Brazilian song diva Flora Purim is featured on 'Yours Is The Light', a gorgeous Afro-Brazilian workout that embraces Cuba son, samba, and soul-jazz. Welcome also marked the first appearance of French soprano saxophonist Jules Broussard on a Santana date. This is a record that pushes the envelope even today and is one of the most inspired recordings in the voluminous Santana oeuvre

Though there were hints of jazz fusion on Santana's first three albums, 1972's Caravanserai introduced a dramatic shift in the band's sound, away from essentially pop-based music to a more harmonically complex jazz/rock hybrid. In addition, the record marked a splintering of the original Santana lineup (soon to splinter further still with the departure of organist Gregg Rolie and guitarist Neal Schon, who then formed Journey). Carlos Santana and crew here turn in an exquisitely moody disc of mostly instrumental jamming with a brooding intensity akin to Miles Davis's classic Bitches Brew, underscored by the San Francisco-based ensemble's trademark propulsive rhythms

SANTANA - ZEBOP - SELF TITLED - ABRAXAS & WELCOME - A FOUR LP SET - ALL THE LAST OUT OF PRINT ISSUES FROM THE ORIGINAL LABEL.
ZEBOP - RARE VINYL PRESSING - is the ideal blend of the percussive psychedelic funky Latin jazz/rock that Carlos Santana has made so famous! All of those bases are covered here sometimes together as on "Searchin" and other times on songs like the grooving "E Papa Re".
Overall ZEBOP also marks a return from late 70's stabs at progressive rock and disco back to Santana's classic sound, marked by "The Sensitve Kind",a JJ Cale cover very similar to the bands Woodstock-era radio hits .The bluesy instrumental version of the standard "I Love You Much Too Much" shows that while strong tunesmiths in their own right Santana can TEAR IT UP on covers! "Brightest Star" is a very soulful ballad showcasing organ work and a great vocal arrangement. "Changes" and "Winning" are both catchy covers given a little dose of Latin-rock even as the fiery instrumentals "Primera Invasion" and the frenetic chant "Hannibal" are just fabulous!
Over twelve songs -- there is no filler - no weak songs and (as always) outstanding production.

WELCOME - TREMENDOUSLY RARE VINYL PRESSING
This is Santana's fifth album originally released in November 1973. A mixture of fusion and blues, it's also the only studio album to feature jazz artist Leon Thomas on vocals (he sings on three of the tracks).
This is the 1973-era Santana band which was featured on the Japanese "Lotus" triple live album. Jazz singer Leon Thomas was part of this group, and "Welcome" continues the "Caravanserai" album format of instrumental-only and vocal tracks, seamlessly flowing into one another.
Strings, marimba, male/female vocals and multiple keyboards (by Tom Coster and Richard Kermode) are tastefully and creatively employed on selected tracks. As far as the content ,it's not dissimilar to its predecessor "Caravanserai" in that it's mostly instrumental and has no hit singles. If you liked "Caravanserai", you'll have no trouble listening to this album of mystical and spiritual tunes.
This was the most musically proficient Santana ensemble ever - drummer Maitreya Michael Shrieve spurs the groove and improvisations, and guitarist Mahavishnu John McLaughlin (with whom Santana recorded the previous year's "Love Devotion Surrender" album) guests on 'Flame-Sky'. Return To Forever members Joe Farrell-flute and Flora Purim-vocal are also featured on 'When I Look Into Your Eyes' and 'Yours Is The Light'. "Flame-Sky" was co-written with John McLaughlin and runs eleven minutes.
The album serenely concludes with the John Coltrane composition 'Welcome'.

Carlos' guitar work is top notch as always on this cd as well as the great vocals of Alex Litgerwood. I think the rockin' songs SEARCHING and OVER AND OVER are better than the 2 hit singles off this LP - WINNING and SENSITIVE KIND. LOVE YOU MUCH TOO MUCH is the best instrumental on the cd with some very intense moving guitar solos. The track THE BRIGHTEST STAR is well worth a listen with a blues rock style with blistering guitar solos by Carlos and a great vocal performance by Alex Litgerwood. I also love the excellent guitar work on HANNIBAL which is the last track on the LP;Carlos really gets jammin' on this song.
