Their first-ever album, raw and rough and still very rock & roll. Lennon and McCartney begin to flex their writing muscles and had already scored two UK hits when this appeared, but they still relied heavily on the cover material to see them through. They were an unknown quantity, still to launch a million bands and take pop music to places it had never dreamed off. Just the beginning!!

They still had plenty of covers to fill out the running time, but the Lennon-McCartney writing team was gathering steam and beginning to knock out pop classics as if they were pulling them out of thin air. "All My Loving" and "I Wanna Be your Man" come from this record, issued hurriedly to capitalize on English Beatlemania. But even when they were laying into some classic Chuck Berry, by this time the Beatles had acquired a unique sound in the blend of John's and Paul's voices, while George was coming on by leaps and bounds as a guitar player.
HELP -
HELP -- How John Lennon's confessional song became the title for a silly James Bond spoof I really don't know. The funny thing is, it works both ways--as a young man's personal statement about learning to open up to others, and as the frantic theme for an exotic espionage chase comedy starring those lovable mop-tops (this time in color). Like A Hard Day's Night, only the first "side" of this album actually contains songs from the movie--the biggest hits being the eponymous cry for assistance and "Ticket to Ride." But part 2 has a few nice tunes as well, like "It's Only Love," "I've Just Seen a Face," and a little ditty called "Yesterday." And I always love it when they do an all-out screamer like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," which sounds like John's raucous answer to Paul's "Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" vocal on Beatles for Sale. Of course, it's essential--as are all the Beatles' soundtracks (all the Beatles' albums).

That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo who hit the highest heights imaginable

RUBBER SOUL – . Rank them how you like, RUBBER SOUL is an undeniable pivotal point in the Fab Four’s varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. REVOLVER wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans remember it as their best. An object lesson in fitting great songwriting into experimental production and genre play, this is also a record whose influence extends far beyond mere they-was-the-greatest cheerleading. Putting McCartney's more traditionally melodic "Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" alongside Lennon's direct-hit sneering ("Dr. Robert") and dreamscapes ("I'm Only Sleeping," "Tomorrow Never Knows") and Harrison's peaking wit ("Taxman") was as conceptually brilliant as anything Sgt. Pepper attempted, and more subtly fulfilling. A must.

The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than Help! or A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single. " Even George's "Blue Jay Way" paints a vivid sound-portrait in fascinating detail. Consider Joni Mitchell's "Car on the Hill" from Court and Spark to be a companion piece about sitting in the Hollywood Hills, waiting for somebody to show up.
This album features the two 45 rpm masterpieces that sum up the quintessential best of Lennon and McCartney at this stage of their development: Paul's "Penny Lane" and John's "I Am the Walrus."
LET IT BE -
LET IT BE often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to go their separate ways. Tracks include:

On Side One, all four Beatles contribute with John Lennon’s hard rocking COME TOGETHER and I WANT YOU SO; George Harrison’s SOMETHING; Ringo’s OCTOPUS’S GARDEN and Paul McCartney’s MAXWELL SILVER HAMMER and OH DARLING complete this first side. A series of long fragments edited together in a sweet form dominates
Side Two. Songs like George Harrison’s HERE COMES THE SUN, BECAUSE, SUN KING, MEAN MR. MUSTARD, POLYTHENE PAM, CAME THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW, NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY, GOLDEN SLUMBERS, and the fitting end to The Beatles last cut forever - THE END have a way of taking you in, up and out. You can feel your energy level rise as you listen to these songs and when you hit the crescendo, they take you down gently. ABBEY ROAD has to be one of the great classic rock albums of all-times. This is one album that Beatles fans will want to add to their album collection as it shows what a force The Beatles were in rock and roll.

DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC - Originally released only in Europe without permission, Does Humor Belong In Music? was reworked by Zappa and released with much more material on CD. A snapshot of Zappa's 1984 band, this live album showcases the pared-down group's energy and ability on a set of concert favorites (with a few special oddities thrown in for good measure). The opening version of the instrumental "Zoot Allures" is one of the best takes on that song released on CD, and the closing "Whippin' Post" finds Zappa trading guitar licks with his son Dweezil. Often overshadowed by some of his other touring ensembles, this group--featuring Chad Wackerman, Scott Thunes, Bobby Martin, Allan Zavod and the dual frontmen of Ike Willis and Ray White-is distinctive and talented, and their performances on songs like "Let's Move to Cleveland" and "What's New in Baltimore" are essential to any Zappa collection. --Andrew Boscardin

"Does Humor Belong in Music?"....like, you had to ask? This live album of highlights from the 1984 tour was originally released in Europe only, and has now been made available here with a spiffy new Cal Schenkel cover replacing the crummy graphics of the import (for you hardcore collectors, the performances are totally different from the ones on the video of the same name).
The material is a good cross-section of FZ's sets at the time, opening with a majestic "Zoot Allures" and moving through the topical "Hot-Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel" (making its recorded debut); and the instrumental solo showpiece "Let's Move to Cleveland," plus a discreet bit of doggerel called "Cock-Suckers' Ball" that's appeared nowhere else (FZ learned this one off a bootleg tape by a '50s doo-wop outfit). For the finale, there's an encore version of "Whippin' Post" featuring Dweezil on guitar. This was the last song from the last show of what Zappa intended to be his last tour, though he hit the road one more time in 1988.
PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS (2CD'S) - You wanted more old Mothers, you got 'em: This "archival" double CD, originally released in 1992, features performances and assorted dialogue snippets from the early 70s version of The Mothers, recorded onstage at NYC's Fillmore East, UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and The Rainbow Theatre in London, and offstage in various locales. This was the Flo & Eddie version of the band, with the ex-Turtles lending their quintessential California harmonies to some of the Mothers' funniest moments as well as their most straight-ahead rockers.
Of special interest is the John Lennon & Yoko Ono guest appearance at The Fillmore in 1971. It had been Lennon's first onstage appearance in nearly two years and his last for a long while, performing the blues standard "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)" and a long jam during which Yoko was tied up in a sack. This performance was heard in excerpted form on Lennon/Ono's album SOMETIME IN NEW YORK CITY; now it can finally be heard in context.

AHEAD OF THEIR TIME - Ahead of their time? No kidding. FZ spent some time in court dodging archaic British obscenity laws as a result of these very shows, so listen with some respect.

THE LOST EPISODES - Frank Zappa personally compiled this new Rykodisc collection of studio rarities, alternate versions, and unreleased tracks as one of his last projects -- not only as a way of paying tribute to many of the people who had affected his life but also as a gesture of appreciation to his fans. Assembled as a kind of after-hours project over 18 months in 1992 and 1993, THE LOST EPISODES includes 30 tracks spanning 1958-1972, with short detours to 1980 and 1992. Tracks of particular note include "Ronny's Booger Story" and "Kenny's Booger Story," which shed new light on the (ahem) incidents which inspired "Let's Make the Water Turn Black,” an early, jazz samba arrangement of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance,” ”Lil’ Clanton Shuffle,” a blues jam left off 1969’s HOT RATS which features Sugar Cane Harris on violin, original recordings of such Zappa gems as “RDNZL” and “Inca Roads,” the 1980 single version of "I Don't Wanna Get Drafted,” and five tracks featuring the vocal stylings of Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) including one of the earliest Zappa-Beefheart studio collaborations, “Tiger Roach.” TLE’s cover art is by Gabor Csupo, founder of Klasky-Csupo Animation, the people who originally animated The Simpsons and now bring you Duckman and Rugrats. Packaged in a deluxe slipcase, the album is accompanied by a 52-page booklet with extensive liner notes by music journalist Rip Rense, including detailed commentary about each song derived from interviews with Zappa, engineer Spencer Chrislu, and a plethora of FZ's musical associates including Vliet, Ruth Underwood, Terry Bozzio, and James "Motorhead" Sherwood. Both Rense and Csupo contributed to this package at Zappa's request.
From his early rock combos of the late 50's to the primitive early-60’s Studio Z era, through the state-of-the-art Utility Muffin Research Kitchen to just about anywhere else FZ ever turned on a tape recorder, THE LOST EPISODES is an autobiographical glimpse behind the scenes of Zappa's long and varied recording career and a fascinating look at one of “popular music’s most brilliant -- and daunting -- figures” (Chicago Sun-Times). HAVE I OFFENDED SOMEONE- Although Zappa did not provide notes with the Offended? master tape, this compilation could be considered his idea of a "Best Of," and indeed, this collection features many of the tunes that first attracted legions of fans to his music. The aforementioned "Valley Girl," with vocals by daughter Moon Unit, was Zappa’s highest charting US single ever, reaching #32 in Billboard and earned Grammy nominations for Moon and FZ (his second), while the accompanying album, 1982’s Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, reached #23. But despite the commercial acclaim of the single and album, Zappa’s ironic sensibilities were lost on the public and the media. Said Zappa in an interview with Josef Woodard, "The worst thing about that record is the fact that nobody really listened to it... The whole coverage of the song barely mentioned what the song was really saying, that these people are really airheads." Nevertheless, the song’s success triggered a movement of sorts, with "Valley Girl" T-shirts, lunch boxes, cosmetics, and offers for a TV series and a film (eventually made without Zappa’s participation). A few years earlier, Zappa’s 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti (which spawned the US hit "Dancin’ Fool," a depiction of the male of the species in a disco frenzy) also contained two of his most razor-sharp and funny portrayals, "Jewish Princess" and "Bobby Brown Goes Down," both of which are included on Have I Offended Someone? Both songs sparked controversy. "Jewish Princess" brought a protest from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, who asked the FCC to ban it from radio airplay. Zappa said the song was satire, threatened to sue, and refused to apologize. He’s quoted in The Real Frank Zappa Book as saying, "...unlike The Unicorn, such creatures do exist—and deserve to be commemorated with their own special opus." "Bobby Brown Goes Down" is perhaps the oddest of Zappa’s successes. This colorful tale of a young man's encounter with a dyke named Freddie" would never get airplay in the US, but it reached the top ofthe charts in Norway and Austria, was Top Ten in Germany and remains a favorite in territories where English is not the primary language. Said Zappa to Matt Groening in a 1992 Guitar World interview, "I don’t think anything has outsold Sheik Yerbouti, partly because "Bobby Brown" keeps becoming a hit every ten years... I think it was back on the charts again in Norway. For no apparent reason, it was back." Have I Offended Someone? also contains two previously unreleased live versions of popular tunes: "Tinsel Town Rebellion," Zappa’s picture of music business execs and musicians joined in an insincere tango in Hollywood ("Did you know that in Tinsel Town the people there think substance is a bore/But if your New Wave group looks good they’ll hurry on back for more... But then again this system works as perfect as a dream/It works for all those record company pricks who come to skim the cream") and "Dumb All Over," Zappa’s scathing rap on televangelists, and one of the most remarkable performances included here.But Have I Offended Someone? is more than great music and humorous lyrics; this collection illuminates Frank Zappa’s fearlessness in dealing with "sensitive" subjects and underscores his courage in refusing to back down for fear of media, corporate, political or religious censorship or disapproval. His year-long campaign in the mid-80s fighting the PMRC and album rating stickers is well documented, particularly in the "Porn Wars" chapter of The Real Frank Zappa Book. His dedication to the cause of artistic liberty is examplified by his testimony before the Maryland State Legislature, which opened with these words: "It is my personal feeling that lyrics cannot harm anyone. There is no sound that you can make with your mouth, or word that will come out of your mouth, that is so powerful that it will make you go to hell."As Ed Sanders’ liner notes for Offended? point out, "It is clear from my decades with the Fugs that there are oodles of humans out there who thirst for the lascivious chants of Have I Offended Someone?... I also know there will be oodles who will listen askance at this gathering of the Zappa legacy." The selections included here are bound to provoke negative reactions from many quarters—potentially offended parties being women, men, gays, jews, catholics, musicians, music business executives, the religious right and the French. It should be noted, however, that Zappa steadfastly defended freedom of speech for 30 years, persistently writing songs about sensitive (but truthful) issues, even in the face of attack and criticism ("rock" and otherwise).Oh yes, about "rock criticism." Zappa never shied away from saying what he really thought about rock critics. His most famous quote on the subject is included in the chapter entitled "Sticks & Stones" in The Real Frank Zappa Book; "Definition of rock journalism: People who can’t write, doing interviews with people who can’t think, in order to prepare articles for people who can’t read."

LET IT BE often gets a bad rap. REVOLVER wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans remember it as their best. Their first-ever album, raw and rough and still very rock & roll. Lennon and McCartney begin to flex their writing muscles and had already scored two UK hits when this appeared, but they still relied heavily on the cover material to see them through. They were an unknown quantity, still to launch a million bands and take pop music to places it had never dreamed off. Just the beginning!!
HELP -- How John Lennon's confessional song became the title for a silly James Bond spoof I really don't know. The funny thing is, it works both ways--as a young man's personal statement about learning to open up to others, and as the frantic theme for an exotic espionage chase comedy starring those lovable mop-tops (this time in color). Like A Hard Day's Night, only the first "side" of this album actually contains songs from the movie--the biggest hits being the eponymous cry for assistance and "Ticket to Ride." But part 2 has a few nice tunes as well, like "It's Only Love," "I've Just Seen a Face," and a little ditty called "Yesterday." And I always love it when they do an all-out screamer like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," which sounds like John's raucous answer to Paul's "Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" vocal on Beatles for Sale. Of course, it's essential--as are all the Beatles' soundtracks (all the Beatles' albums).

That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo who hit the highest heights imaginable
BEATLES FOR SALE -- BEATLES FOR SALE came out for the 1964 Christmas market. The Beatles, whose instincts for what worked musically were so strong that they could basically do no wrong--any record that has "Baby's in Black," "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and the delectable "Eight Days a Week" on it is only "minor" in the most relative sense. And, though their voices had been frazzled a bit by constant touring, they revved them up for some joyous shouting, and indulged their fondness for American country in subtle, playful ways.

They still had plenty of covers to fill out the running time, but the Lennon-McCartney writing team was gathering steam and beginning to knock out pop classics as if they were pulling them out of thin air. "All My Loving" and "I Wanna Be your Man" come from this record, issued hurriedly to capitalize on English Beatlemania. But even when they were laying into some classic Chuck Berry, by this time the Beatles had acquired a unique sound in the blend of John's and Paul's voices, while George was coming on by leaps and bounds as a guitar player.

Elvis' theatrical ouevre found him portraying singing busboys, singing prizefighters, even a singing doctor in love with a nun, all of which makes his role as the heir to a pineapple fortune in "Blue Hawaii" sound positively prosaic. But Elvis and Hawaii were made for each other like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and "Blue Hawaii" became one of his most successful movies. The soundtrack was the No. 1 record in the U.S. for an astonishing 20 weeks, making it Elvis' most commercially successful LP, and one of the most successful LPs of all time.
Like most of Elvis' soundtracks, the album contains some real gems surrounded by some real dross. This 1997 reissue is remastered and remixed from the original master tapes, and includes several extra tracks. Amid such frivolities as "Rock-A-Hula Baby" (co-written by Ed Wood's girlfriend Dolores Fuller) are classic tracks like "Can't Help Falling In Love." The reissue adds the actual on-screen version of this prime Elvis ballad.

YES BIG GENERATOR. This LP is your last chance to own the original pressing with all inserts included.
Out of Print FACTORY SEALED Analog LP with small cutout hole on jacket but contains all the original LP picture sleeve and inserts.
Big Generator might be the most underrated album in the Yes catalogue. It's by far their best album featuring Trevor Rabin. Tensions in the band were running high while recording this, and it shows through in the album's disparate musical styles. I will concede that it seems somewhat overproduced at first, but the end result is so great that it's not really an issue.
"Rhythm of Love," one of the better Yes pop songs, kicks things off. It's kind of like a marriage of Eddie Van Halen's guitar and The Beach Boys' harmonies, which seems odd, but it works very well. "Love Will Find a Way" is one of the most notorious Yes songs for its line, "I eat at Chez Nous," and yeah, that does kind of tarnish the song. But it's inoffensive. The title track recalls "Owner of a Lonely Heart" a bit too much, but I still like it. "Final Eyes" is an emotional power ballad featuring some of Jon Anderson's best vocals ever. The rocker "Almost Like Love" and the gentle "Holy Lamb" are enjoyable, but neither are really noteworthy.
The album's best song, and one of the best songs Yes have ever done, is "I'm Running." It's some of the most exciting seven-and-a-half minutes ever in rock music. The song moves through many moods, from light Latin to dark and heavy, and then in the climax, both. And the vocals. "I'm Running" has the greatest vocals of any Yes song, bar none. The harmonies in its last minute are awe-inspiring; I've never heard anything like it. The airy, dreamlike "Shoot High Aim Low" is Big Generator's second highlight. It's slower and simpler than "I'm Running" but still packs a punch. The interwoven and seemingly unrelated vocals of Trevor Rabin and Jon Anderson are great, as are Rabin's guitar solos (one acoustic, one electric).
Big Generator is a great combination of some sleek pop tunes and a couple of weighty, intelligent masterpieces. No rock fan should be without it.

One of the most creative and explosive bands of the '60s. The Who didn't record an official live album until 1970. For fans of the revved-up, introspective, and humorous fare that made records such as My Generation, Sell Out, and A Quick One instant classics, 1970 was a good three years too late. Rather than referring to sometimes-dodgy bootlegs to discover what "Pictures of Lily," "Disguises," or "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" sounded like live, we are now presented with a surprisingly clear document of the band at--arguably--their peak. A fabulous portrait of the artists as a young band, the disc brims with minor revelations--chief among them that they were pretty sorry as an R&B outfit and that (surprise) with Moon, Entwhistle, and Townshend bashing about, even a mid-tempo number like "Happy Jack" was a total scorcher live.
The band blazes through these songs so fast -- and you thought the Ramones and the Minutemen invented that kind of lightning-speed concision -- that it's easy to miss how perfectly constructed they are. The Who's sound rests on the tension between carefully defined pop-song structures pushed to the breaking point by the band's propulsive, chaotic power. Singer Roger Daltrey and bassist John Enthwhistle are hardly slouches, but guitarist Pete Townshend and drummer Keith Moon are true wonders. They wail with such unrestrained glee that they frequently threaten to blow these songs apart. Then, by some miracle, they land in time, and the song ends. All that in two-and-a-half minutes -- with lovely, Beach Boys-derived vocal harmonies to boot. That's why it's earned the right to be called classic rock -- and why this disc is such an unadulterated pleasure from start to finish.

Love is an unprecedented approach to the Beatles' catalog, featuring wildly alternative mixes and "mash-ups," the combining of two or more Beatles tunes mixed together for a wholly unique song.
The project came about when Paul and Ringo, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, approached legendary producer Sir George Martin about making experimental mixes from their master tapes. Actually, Martin says that the concept was born several years before when George Harrison and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, began to explore the possibilities of a collaboration between Cirque du Soleil and the Beatles. Out of that vision, Love was born. Martin and his son, Giles, have created a completely unique soundscape. Says Martin: "My brief was to create a soundscape of around one and a half hour's length using any sound I needed from the original Beatles multi-track recordings. It was an offer one could hardly refuse."
Opinions will no doubt vary as to the validity of these new mixes. Purists may be offended. Those thirsting for new Beatles material may be thrilled. One thing's for certain: Love will be among the most talked about releases in many years.

Their first-ever album, raw and rough and still very rock & roll. Lennon and McCartney begin to flex their writing muscles and had already scored two UK hits when this appeared, but they still relied heavily on the cover material to see them through. They still had plenty of covers to fill out the running time, but the Lennon-McCartney writing team was gathering steam and beginning to knock out pop classics as if they were pulling them out of thin air. "All My Loving" and "I Wanna Be your Man" come from this record, issued hurriedly to capitalize on English Beatlemania. But even when they were laying into some classic Chuck Berry, by this time the Beatles had acquired a unique sound in the blend of John's and Paul's voices, while George was coming on by leaps and bounds as a guitar player.

The Beatles, whose instincts for what worked musically were so strong that they could basically do no wrong--any record that has "Baby's in Black," "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and the delectable "Eight Days a Week" on it is only "minor" in the most relative sense. And, though their voices had been frazzled a bit by constant touring, they revved them up for some joyous shouting, and indulged their fondness for American country in subtle, playful ways.

HELP - BLACK VINYL
HELP -- How John Lennon's confessional song became the title for a silly James Bond spoof I really don't know. The funny thing is, it works both ways--as a young man's personal statement about learning to open up to others, and as the frantic theme for an exotic espionage chase comedy starring those lovable mop-tops (this time in color). Like A Hard Day's Night, only the first "side" of this album actually contains songs from the movie--the biggest hits being the eponymous cry for assistance and "Ticket to Ride." But part 2 has a few nice tunes as well, like "It's Only Love," "I've Just Seen a Face," and a little ditty called "Yesterday." And I always love it when they do an all-out screamer like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," which sounds like John's raucous answer to Paul's "Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" vocal on Beatles for Sale. Of course, it's essential--as are all the Beatles' soundtracks (all the Beatles' albums).

That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. REVOLVER - BLACK STEREO VINYL
REVOLVER wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans remember it as their best. An object lesson in fitting great songwriting into experimental production and genre play, this is also a record whose influence extends far beyond mere they-was-the-greatest cheerleading. Putting McCartney's more traditionally melodic "Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" alongside Lennon's direct-hit sneering ("Dr. Robert") and dreamscapes ("I'm Only Sleeping," "Tomorrow Never Knows") and Harrison's peaking wit ("Taxman") was as conceptually brilliant as anything Sgt. Pepper attempted, and more subtly fulfilling. A must.

The album feels even more like a collection of singles (instead of an actual movie soundtrack) than Help! or A Hard Day's Night, but maybe that's because every song sounds like it could have been a hit single. " Even George's "Blue Jay Way" paints a vivid sound-portrait in fascinating detail. Love is an unprecedented approach to the Beatles' catalog, featuring wildly alternative mixes and "mash-ups," the combining of two or more Beatles tunes mixed together for a wholly unique song.
The project came about when Paul and Ringo, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, approached legendary producer Sir George Martin about making experimental mixes from their master tapes. Actually, Martin says that the concept was born several years before when George Harrison and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, began to explore the possibilities of a collaboration between Cirque du Soleil and the Beatles. Out of that vision, Love was born. Martin and his son, Giles, have created a completely unique soundscape. Says Martin: "My brief was to create a soundscape of around one and a half hour's length using any sound I needed from the original Beatles multi-track recordings. It was an offer one could hardly refuse."
Opinions will no doubt vary as to the validity of these new mixes. Purists may be offended. Those thirsting for new Beatles material may be thrilled. One thing's for certain: Love will be among the most talked about releases in many years.
"This album puts the Beatles back together again, because suddenly there's John and George with me and Ringo," said Paul McCartney. "It's kind of magical."

Given his unparalleled talent for innovative recording, mixing, and soundscaping, producer Sir George Martin has always been rightly referred to as "the fifth Beatle." Some 35 years after the Beatles disbanded, Martin was still shaping the group's music, as demonstrated by the 2006 release LOVE. The album (created to coincide with a Cirque du Soleil performance based on Beatles songs) amounts to a musical fantasia centered on the Beatles' output, with famous work from both early and late in the band's career collaged with great care and artistry.
Martin's relationship to the band gives him a unique perspective (not to mention access to a vast catalogue of multi-track tapes), which results in a shape-shifting overview that encompasses demo recordings, instrumental passages, and snippets from some of the best-loved Beatles tunes. Beatles fanatics will be in seventh heaven playing "name that reference" on this sonic carpet ride, but LOVE also provides something of an "overture" to the Beatles' oeuvre. The SPECIAL EDITION comes with a bonus audio-only DVD featuring the album in various stereo mixes.

This is the fourth and final long-player of new material from Strawberry Alarm Clock (SAC). As with their previous discs, Good Morning Starshine is a mixed affair. Prior to recording the album, the band underwent a somewhat drastic personnel change -- replacing longtime members George Bunnell (bass/vocals) and Randy Seol (drums/vocals) with Jimmy Pitman (guitar/vocals) and Gene Gunnels (drums), respectively. Also of note is the fact that all of Bunnell's songwriting credits for material on this album actually belong to Gunnels. The music has shifted away from the mix of punky psychedelia such as "Love Me Again" and "The World Is on Fire," inheriting a much more aggressive, bluesy approach à la Grand Funk Railroad or even (gasp) MC5. Although there are sonic vestiges and remnants of the band's former self -- such as the disc's pseudo-hippie title track -- by all accounts this was the antithesis of what the band had been up until this point. The dichotomy in the material on Good Morning Starshine is indicative that SAC had pretty much run their course. With managerial and other behind-the-scenes issues continuing to plague them, there are no signs of cohesion within the grooves. The disc is certainly full of strong material, despite the decidedly aimless direction. "Small Package" is reminiscent of the band's sound, circa Wake Up...It's Tomorrow. Likewise, the song is a minor chord masterpiece in the same vein as their previous hit, "Tomorrow." The "California Girls" vocal tag is a nod to the Beach Boys, with whom SAC shared many a late-'60s performance stage. Additionally, either of the two versions of the mid-tempo rocker "Miss Attraction" would have been a welcome addition to their earlier releases. The free-form jamming and lead guitar lines are definitely reminiscent of early Spirit and the highly underrated Bay Area band Kak. The heavier and blues-influenced "Me and the Township," "Off Ramp Road Tramp," and "Hog Child" recall Blue Cheer and even later-era Moby Grape as much as they do the electric British blues of, say, Fleetwood Mac. ~ Lindsay Planer
