TOMMY - DISC ONE THE COMPLETE LP
There might not be so much stigma for the term - rock and roll opera. 75 minutes, the running time--that of some of the most inspired work the Who, which is to say anybody, ever produced. Remember that the narrative, while coherent, is little more than an excuse for songs. There is a reason the 1975 film was a musical from start to finish--the story would have sunk otherwise. But what songs! 1921 enchants, while Christmas seamlessly blends joy, sarcasm and wonder. The highlight of the album comes late in the story with Go to the Mirror and Roger Daltrey's effervescent delight, Sally Simpson. Best of all, the pacing is perfect.
The overture contains elements of its climax and the finale, and the weakest material (Cousin Kevin) hides in the middle. What makes Tommy most impressive is that it was not dreamed up by conceited artists accustomed to hearing how great they were from music intelligentsia. Rather it was the work of 4 upstarts in their early and mid-20's who were most famous at that point for angst-ridden songs. The angry My Generation, the frustrated Can't Explain, the sly Pictures of Lily and the resigned Kids are Alright all keep appealing to teenagers even as the Who have grown to grandfather age. Just before Tommy, the Who's assaults on stage equipment and hotel rooms were stuff of legend. Starting with Tommy and continuing through Who Are You the delinquents found creative outlets for the rage, the fear and the angst.

Banjoist Elmer Snowden only led two albums in the LP era, and his OJC LP reissue is his best showcase. Snowden, who is joined by stride pianist Cliff Jackson, bassist Tommy Bryant and drummer Jimmy Crawford, is the lead voice throughout the dozen standards, all of which date from the 1920s or '30s. Snowden's dixieland banjo style is a lost art, and this is his definitive recording. Highly recomended joyous music.

Timed for release at the same time as his painfully honest autobiography of the same name, Straight Life put Art Pepper together with three distinguished musicians who supported him with attentiveness and driving power. Drummer Billy Higgins had recorded with Pepper before. But pianist Tommy Flanagan had not. Nor, oddly, had bassist Red Mitchell, despite his and Pepper's both having been prominent on the California scene of the 1950s. Regardless, they all spoke the same musical language and did so on this date with rare eloquence. Included is Pepper's intricate "Make a List, Make a Wish" and new versions of two of his 1950s compositions, "Surf Ride" and "Straight Life."

Sensing the emollient rattle of punk was an artistic dead end, the Clash took an abrupt volte-face and invited American Sandy Pearlman to produce their second album. Respected for his work with Blue Oyster Cult and the Dictators, Pearlman introduced a sheen that disturbed purists but introduced the Clash to a wider audience. The clear sound brought a new emphasis to the quartet's internal interplay and allowed the material to stand up in its own right. GIVE EM ENOUGH ROPE contains several of the band's most popular songs, which range from the defiant "Tommy Gun" to the sensitive "Stay Free," a contrast confirming the Clash's wider musical ambitions.

Before this album was released in 1976, George Benson was known largely for his Wes Montgomery/Charlie Christian-inspired licks and his stints with Jack McDuff and Miles Davis. Breezin' was a million-selling, Grammy Award-winning LP and made Benson an "overnight" star. The reasons for that success were Tommy LiPuma's topnotch production, Claus Ogerman's ethereal arrangements, and Benson's soulful vocals on Leon Russell's ballad "This Masquerade."
Backed by Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason, master percussionist Ralph MacDonald, bassist Stanley Banks, rhythm guitarist Phil Upchurch, and keyboardists Ronnie Scott and Jorge Dalto, Benson and the crew laid down the moods and grooves we now call "contemporary jazz." From the soft-rock of "Six to Four," the midtempo backbeat of the title track, and the Latin-tinged tunes "Affirmation," "So This Is Love?" and "Lady," Benson's fleet-fingered Ibanez guitar lines make the rare leap from straight-ahead to the mainstream.
Added to the CD reissue are three bonus tracks not on the LP: a snappy and soulful rendition of "Down Here on the Ground," from the movie Cool Hand Luke, a Bob James-like funk number "Shark Bite," and the single-edit version of "This Masquerade." Smith's debut session for Verve kicks off with an explosive big band sound. The first four tracks of BASHIN' feature a sizeable backing orchestra (whose personnel list that may ring some unexpected bells, like future Tonight Show bandleader Doc Severinsen) and dramatic arrangements by Oliver Nelson (who also assumes conducting duties). While fans of Smith's lower-key trio work for Blue Note may cringe at the blare of horns and the grandiose dynamic shifts, Smith is still in uber-cool form, and his Hammond plays the groovy foil to Nelson's occasionally square arrangements.
Die-hard enthusiasts of the trio won't be disappointed, however, since the last three tracks are strictly old school. Quentin Warren and Donald Bailey help mix it up in deep blues fashion on "Beggar For the Blues" and the title track, while Smith, even after the large-scale blasts of Bernstein's "Walk On The Wild Side" and Nelson's "Step Right Up," seems right at home. This disc, released in 1962, captures the artist at a transition period, and proves that no matter the band, year or label, Smith was a consistently compelling artist.
