When you're anthologizing the Rolling Stones, one of the first things you must accept is that you're doomed to failure. No one album can possibly tell the story of the band that's explored so many different musical avenues and recorded so many memorable songs. Still, the double-disc best of HOT ROCKS, and this, its sequel, come perilously close. This set wisely doesn't attempt to be comprehensive. Instead, it just picks out various gems from different points in the band's development.
Their R&B/roots period is well-represented by covers of "It's All Over Now" and "Not Fade Away." "She's A Rainbow" and "2000 Light Years From Home" are monuments to the band's psychedelic phase. "No Expectations" and "Let It Bleed" are bluesy tunes that cut to the quick, emphasizing the Stones' gift for visceral compositions and the sound that defined what was--arguably--their greatest period (the late '60s). Though HOT ROCKS is the place to turn for a comprehensive cross section of the band's biggest and most essential hits, MORE HOT ROCKS is an excellent companion piece, bringing together some of the Stones' lesser known but equally satisfying work.

he Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass instrument); Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica); Mike Pinder (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums, percussion).
Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band's most adventurous music. The band had recently discovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening "Procession" instantly sets this collection's experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth.
Other standout tracks include "After You Came," which features tessellated vocal layering and bluesy guitar work; "Emily," a song that John Lodge wrote for his daughter; and the rapturously symphonic "You Can Never Go Home." Rich, complex, powerful, and beautifully produced, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR brings together all of the Moody Blues' best qualities in one album, standing as the culmination of their fine '60s work, and the standard-bearer for the music to come.

NEWS OF THE WORLD - When it was released in 1977, NEWS OF THE WORLD seemed at loggerheads with a music world that had moved beyond Queen's operatic pomp-rock and on to punk. In fact, the album was more in step with the punk scene than the output of most superstar acts of the time, as it contains Roger Taylor's furious "Sheer Heart Attack" and Freddie Mercury's lean, brutal "Get Down, Make Love." LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM - Bigger-than-life and proud of it, Queen's tongue-in-cheek pomposity was ironically one of its most endearing charms. This double-disc live album recorded at the band's typically massive 1986 Wembley Stadium stand in support of it’s A KIND OF MAGIC album is a perfect distillation of the band's overarching intentions--and virtually every '70s/'80s rock cliché punk rebelled against. The tracks may reverberate with the boominess of the stadium in which hey were recorded, but it's an ambience that underscores the shows' propulsive, populist intent.
Latter day hits like "Under Pressure" and "Another One Bites the Dust" may have their nascent club-beat savvy hammered into conformity with thumping rockers like "We Will Rock You" and "Tie Your Mother Down," but then this is as unapologetic as stadium rock gets. Mercury, May, Deacon, and Taylor are in top form throughout, shrewdly building the show into what, given its relatively late recording date in their career, might as well be an emblematic greatest hits live (especially on its brisk-paced second disc) experience.
LIVE MAGIC - It's true that many of the songs are abridged (shortened) on this "live" show release, but that didn't bother me like some reviewers on here. If I want to hear the complete version so fthe songs, I have those too. The important thing is that the songs are played well on here and the sound is good. Queen was a brilliantly talented band that will go down in the Rock hall of fame and remain with us forever. This live version of their songs is a good compliment to the studio recordings of many of their best songs.

LIVE KILLERS - Its just straight Queen compositions unedited and perfectly shows that Queen was an awesome Live band during their 16 years of performing live, hugely talented. Freddie Mercury is an underrated keyboardist and he really goes to town on the piano on tracks like” Spread Your Wings”,’ Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ while also playing the whistle heard on the album and the maracas and doing some awesome vocalizing, his voice here is really in fine form. Brian May provides some awesome multi-layered guitar work as well as fine acoustic and regular electric guitar. Roger Taylor drums up a storm and shows his percussive virtuosity on the tympani and John Deacon lays down a solid electric and double bass.

Britain's POLICE got its start in the late 70s days of punk, but the trio's background in jazz, fusion, and rock belied the punky image suggested by the bands dyed-blond hair. Indeed, where many punks were inspired amateurs, the Police (Sting on bass and vocals, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums) were accomplished players who quickly developed a sophisticated approach to the power-trio format.
The material constructed with guitar, bass and drums often at tempos that would never be matched in their later studio recordings, stands apart. Andy Summers guitar textures are here more traditional and without their later ethereal quality, but his chord choices on ROXANNE for example, or his expansive solo lines on SO LONELY would have baffled most of the burgeoning punk guitar school. Stewart Copelands drumming, enriched as it is by a multinational upbringing and stage experience in the last gasps of the progressive-rock movement. The rhythms of reggae are woven into the music and Sting's vocals pay conscious tribute to Bob Marley. The songs are mostly about love, or a lack of personal connection and the hits alone are worth the price of the album.

Opening with the epic "Like a Rolling Stone," Highway 61 Revisited careens through nine songs that range from reflective folk-rock and blues to flat-out garage rock. Highway 61 Revisited had not only changed Dylan's sound, but his persona, trading the folk troubadour for a streetwise, cynical hipster. Always ahead of their time, The Velvet Underground is a true original in America rock n roll. Recorded in September 1967 at Mayfair Sound Studios in New York, WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT was the Velvet Underground’s second release. By this time, Nico had embarked on a solo career and Andy Warhol was on to other projects leaving the original line-up of Reed, Cale, Morrison and Tucker.
Cale left the band after this title was released in January 1968, only to return for short stints. (Warhol’s one contribution to the album was the over artwork idea.) WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT actually hit the Billboard 200 chart shortly after release. The All Music Guide to Rock gave it a 5-diamond/essential recording rating.
The Rolling Stone Album Guide says WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT “taps into the group’s brilliant, blinding musical essence” with the hypnotic 17-minute song SISTER RAY. The song - HERE SHE COMES NNOW is considered an “underrated jewel” and THE GIFT FOLOWS THE ORIGINAL VERSION WITH John Cale speaking the lyrics on one channel and the music in the other so that one or the other may be completely tun3d out or turned up.
The distortion and feedback effects were produced with total artistic control by Reed with a Vox plug-in device for his guitar. Mobile Fidelity brings out the bottom end and warms up Velvet Underground’s purposeful layers of instruments and sound effects.

GETZ/GILBERTO - MFSL Factory Sealed Gold CD
Two names spring to mind upon hearing the words jazz and samba , namely those of Stan Getz and João Gilberto. But really one should be thinking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who, with his composition from 1958 Chega de saudade, first created the type of Brazilian samba that is known today as bossa nova. It was with one of Jobim’s songs, Desafinado, that the bossa nova began its triumphant conquest of the USA. In 1962, Stan Getz made the work widely known when he recorded the number, together with Charlie Byrd, on his album Jazz Samba. It was this recording, along with Focus (1961), which was responsible for Getz’s definitive comeback in the USA at that same time. Jazz Samba opened the floodgates to a new musical vogue, and although cool jazz had been swept aside by hard bop, the reserved and melancholy touch of Getz’s style once again became all the rage. It is really not at all surprising, therefore, that the album Getz/Gilberto, recorded in March 1963 for the Verve label, was a winner right from the very start, bringing together as it did the two godfathers of samba Jobim and Gilberto with their American brother Getz. This music is like a pleasantly warm bath whose water is perfumed with essential oil, or like a mild summer night bathed in golden moonlight. The songs, all of them now classics in their own right, are filled with the joy of life, peace and harmony.

The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat.
Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, minimal arrangements and production ensure that GETZ/GILBERTO will never date, age, or tire. It's a perfect album.

Throughout the record Jim Capaldi's understated yet steady drums demonstrate just what a great rock drummer should do, and Chris Wood's sound is everywhere, with trills on flute and blasts on saxophone. TRAFFIC is a record that will always be meant for glorious sunny days.

Up to this Album, while most musicians recognize Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the Jazz of the fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with feint praise. “St. Thomas” a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as “The Carnival” was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here. It remains a Jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan’s eloquent swing, Doug Watkin’s steady lift, and Max Roach’s most musical accompaniment and soloing make this a landmark album.

This wonderful 1958 session features the tenor sax legend leading pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor on a well-chosen five-song set of jazz and pop standards. The album opens with a lively version of Count Basie's "Good Bait" that allows Coltrane, Chambers and Garland to indulge in some exquisite, highly inventive solos. While Coltrane's versions of Billy Eckstine's "I Want To Talk About You" and Fred Lacey's "Theme For Ernie" are pretty much straight ballad performances, his bold, powerful style brings out the soulful feel of these two beautiful, reflective melodies.
The closing track--a wild rendition of Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby," ends the album on a high note, with Coltrane and Garland racing through this complicated tune with remarkable precision and focus. Superbly recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, SOULTRANE is a true jazz classic and quite simply one of Coltrane's finest albums.

The late '50s were tough on Judy Garland, but this live recording, cut on April 23, 1961, at Carnegie Hall, would (rightfully) bring the legendary icon back into the spotlight. Live would go on to win five Grammys, be Garland's bestselling record, and confirm that, yes, on certain levels, she still had it. Her vocals are as strong as ever on these tunes, and Garland has fun with an audience obviously enraptured by her charms. She's self-deprecating where necessary--on "You Go to My Head" she "forgets" the lyrics but pretends to improvise. Mostly she just shines, especially on tunes she made famous, such as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Stormy Weather," and "Over the Rainbow." Double Gold CD contains 26 songs. .
For this reissue, the concert has been remastered in a splendid 24-karat gold audiophile format based only on the original masters. It also contains the artwork, liner notes, and photo montage from the original album, as well as a new essay on Garland by Scott Schechter.
