A calm, reflective album, John Wesley Harding strips away all of the wilder tendencies of Dylan¹s rock albums...the album is his first serious foray into country, but only a handful of songs, such as "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," are straight country songs. Freewheelin' is Bob Dylan's second record. While his first was an album of mostly folk song covers with only two originals, this record had only two covers, the rest being originals and some of Bob Dylan's finest work. "Girl From the North Country" is one of my favorite songs, by anybody, and to think it was written by a twenty-one-year-old kid, almost half a century ago, way back in 1963.
"Master's of War" still seems valid today. Re, those masters of war, those seller's of guns, "There is one thing I know, though I'm younger than you, that even Jesus would never forgive what you do." Yet, despite those words that moved so many, all these years later the masters of war are still plying their trade. And, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention "Blowin' in the Wind," perhaps the best antiwar song ever written. Dylan asks nine questions about war and freedom, the answers to all of them, I'm afraid are, "Blowin' in the Wind."

ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN - The first of two transitional albums in which Dylan moved beyond protest and then beyond folk music. Here, in songs like "Chimes of Freedom" and "My Back Pages," he suggested that social issues were much more complicated than the increasingly-polarized times made them seem. His lyrics, meanwhile, also became more complicated and poetic. Other singers would mine this album for hits with "All I Really Want to Do" and "It Ain’t Me, Babe."

Recorded in 1966.
Once known as hard-core blues/R&B traditionalists, the Stones plunged deeper into the waters of original songwriting on BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, leading to a golden age of classic albums including LET IT BLEED, BEGGAR'S BANQUET and EXILE ON MAIN STREET. BUTTONS was also the last album produced by then-manager/svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. More importantly, the obscure songs on this tight package show the Stones coming into their own as composers.
Between the melodic balladry of "Back Street Girl" and Mick Jagger's Dylanesque inflections on "She Smiled Sweetly," BUTTONS found the Stones in a strata far beyond covering Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Although none of these developments ranks with the Beatles' contemporaneous sonic experiments, the Fabs' bad-boy counterparts showed differing degrees of whimsy and sass, i.e. Ian Stewart's barrelhouse piano and Brian Jones' kazoo playing on "Cool, Calm & Collected" or the Dixieland-flavored "Something Happened To Me Yesterday."

Many of these songs sound like lost WHITE ALBUM classics. He’s in great voice, singing with passion in songs that convey emotion but without also failing to entertain.

END OF THE CENTURY -
This is my generation's Exile on Main St., totally misunderstood by idiot critics (and seemingly, the Ramones themselves. Only Joey seemed to dig it) Here, the Ramones stake their claim to the whole of American Rock 'n Roll, not just parochial NYC punk, and Phil Spector (who legitimately loved this band) justifies his own sorry existence by giving them the gift of the biggest wall of sound he ever came up with. After this album, Johnny stole Joey's girlfriend and the magic was gone, they started claiming individual song credits, they brought in ringers to play guitar solos on the albums, DeeDee started shooting up again, Joey started boozing and not caring, and the band went down the toilet. But this record just sounds better and better with each passing year. (Except "Chinese Rocks" -- interesting to hear the boys jump from household solvents to hard drugs, but Johnny Thunders friggin' OWNS this song; Joey just ain't a convincing junkie. Still, the tune's darkness adds to E of the C's stylistic diversity). Did I say my generation's Exile on Main St? It's also my generations White Album and London Calling.

In the Nineties, the Rolling Stones have marked the end of each of their colossal world tours with a live album. The twist on No Security, the band's third caught-in-the-act collection this decade, is the way that everything -- from golden oldies to midcareer hits to selections from Bridges to Babylon, the last studio album -- becomes more vital under the heavy lights of the big live rig. The Stones are experts at making more recent material sound as important as their warhorses: Bridges' "Out of Control" acquires a menacing swagger, while "Saint of Me" blossoms, approaching the vitriolic intensity of "Exile on Main Street." It's rare enough that the Rolling Stones share the stage with anyone, and there are some inspired cameos here: Taj Mahal enlivens "Corinna," Dave Matthews injects new, bittersweet sorrow into "Memory Motel," and saxophonist Joshua Redman soars through "Waiting on a Friend." But what's most impressive is the consistency with which the rhythm section, ever mindful of the groove fundamentals, cranks it up. This album represents a turning point for the Stones. Though they had not yet fully integrated the baroque aspirations of pop into their music, the flower-power influence had nonetheless begun to take root. While all the earlier elements of their sound are still firmly in place, in the folky "Backstreet Girl" and the relentlessly rocking "Let's Spend The Night Together," new sounds also crop up. Cuts like the woodwind-sweetened ballad "Ruby Tuesday" and the Middle Eastern-tinged "Mother's Little Helper" set the stage for the full-blown head-trip that would unveil itself later that year on THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST.
THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST - JAPAN LONDON RECORDS LAX1011 INMINT MINUS CONDITION - No Stones album split critical opinion as much as their stab at psychedelia. Uncut magazine concluded that although the record has long been derided as the Stones’ misguided attempt to outdo the Beatles, it is, in fact, “a neglected psychedelic masterpiece” and “superior to Sgt. Pepper as a document of that first British summer of love.” It featured their most innovative arrangements, which incorporated African rhythms and full orchestration.

AFTEMATH U.K. TRACKS JAPAN LONDON RECORDS LAX 1006 IN NEAR MINT CONDITION - 1966 was a momentous year for albums. Aftermath was right up there with Pet Sounds, Revolver and Blonde On Blonde. The album represented a milestone for the Stones as it was the first to consist solely of Jagger/Richards original songs. It also featured the immaculate guitar work of Brian Jones and the remarkably-wry, observant “Mother’s Little Helper,” with extremely blatant and, for the time, controversial drug references.
