After two mildly successful, vaguely new-wave albums, Bay Area bar band Huey Lewis and the News (several of whose members had backed Elvis Costello on MY AIM IS TRUE) hooked up with mega-selling producer Mike Chapman and released 1983's SPORTS. The album dominated both AM and FM radio throughout 1984, aligning it with THRILLER, PURPLE RAIN, SHE'S SO UNUSUAL, and Madonna's early singles as definitive pop music of its era.
SPORTS is genial frat-boy rock at its finest. Singles "The Heart of Rock and Roll," "Heart and Soul," "I Want a New Drug," and "If This is It" comprise half of the album, and these songs have stood up to repeated listens. Hearing SPORTS today, the album still sounds surprisingly fresh, all the more remarkable when one considers how poorly other hits of the day have fared.

On July 30, 1970, an audience of around 400 were privileged to attend two impromptu performances by the worlds greatest rock guitarist, Jimi Hendrix. The movie Rainbow Bridge, directed by Chuck Wein, tracks the journey of one character across the Pacific to Maui, Hawaii, with Hendrix's music intended to serve as a back drop to the film and the awesome Hawaiian scenery. The film eventually featured only a small amount of live footage, and the 1970s soundtrack actually included no music from the concert at all. Available for the first time in 32 years, this is the complete performance of the first of the two concerts, both of which feature Jimi at the pea of his incredible powers.

This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another riff-driven rocker. Vocalist Ian Gillian, whose dramatic, soaring tenor set the mold for many heavy metal singers to follow, is in fine form here, as are the pyrotechnics of Blackmore and Lord. Everything from the title to the warped group photo on the album cover indicates that MACHINE HEAD will be an exercise in unabashed, brain-melting rock, and that is exactly what it delivers. It still stands in the pantheon of seminal hard rock records.

We finally got around to pitching the idea of bringing the set back on a very limited basis to John McDermott at Experience Hendrix. John said "let's go for it" but how about coloured vinyl? We said "Cool" and so we pressed some new sleeves and coloured vinyl singles for this special limited edition reissue just in time for the Holidays.

SCORSESE BLUES ON BLUE VINYL DOUBLE LP SET - As part of the numerous compilations issued in conjunction with the major television documentary series The Blues, this is a collection of blues-oriented Hendrix recordings. There is a previous compilation of Hendrix's blues-oriented work in 1994, simply titled Blues. There is little repetition between Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues and Blues, though, and it works as a decent grouping of some of his bluesiest recordings for those listeners who want to plunge especially deeply into one facet of his repertoire.
"Red House" and "Voodoo Chile" are by far the most celebrated tracks here. The fine Earl King cover "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" (from Electric Ladyland) is the only other song that came out in Hendrix's lifetime The other selections vary from inspired ("Hear My Train a Comin'," recorded in early 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience lineup, and a solo "Midnight Lightning") to straight ahead jams, with Hendrix's imaginative virtuosity and affinity for the blues evident.
This being a posthumous Hendrix release, it couldn't be complete without a couple of previously unissued tracks to tempt the completists, Those are the 1969 outtakes "Georgia Blues," on which Hendrix is actually more like a backing musician for Lonnie Youngblood (who takes lead vocals), and "Blue Window," a nearly 13-minute outing that gives vent to his jazzier tendencies, the arrangement also featuring organ, three saxophones, and two trumpets.
The liner notes about Jimi's blues record collecting habits by mid-'60s girlfriend Faye Pridgon are pretty cool. A must for Hendrix LP lovers.
