THE SKY IS CRYING is a collection of 10 previously unreleased studio tracks compiled by Stevie Ray's brother Jimmie Vaughan.
Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system.
Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (guitar, vocals); Reese Wynans (keyboards); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums).
Producers: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, Richard Mullen, Jim Capfer, Jim Gaines.
Reissue producer: Jimmie Vaughn.
Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York from January to February 1984; The Dallas Sound Lab, Dallas, Texas from March to May 1985; Kiva Studios, Memphis, Tennessee from February to April 1989; Sound Castle Studios, Los Angeles, California from April to May 1989. Includes liner notes by Dan Forte.
Vaughan's death in August 1990 brought to a tragic end the surging wave of his popularity. The album he had made with his brother Jimmie, FAMILY STYLE, had just been released and this album, prepared by Jimmie from the various album sessions, was not expected to amount to much. In fact, this was at least as good as any of them--and better than LIVE ALIVE. "Little Wing" was perhaps his best adaptation of a Jimi Hendrix song. His take on the Elmore James title song was also a fitting tribute to both the writer and the performer. There are bound to be further compilations and live recordings released, but these studio recordings are testimony to Stevie Ray's devotion to his craft.
Editorial reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ...the blusiest collection of [Vaughn's] career...could well be his best...there's so much presence, passion and heart in these performances that it's harder than ever to believe that Stevie's gone...

"Sly And The Family Stone, Small Talk - 180 Gram"
Sly and the Family Stone, led by the enigmatic Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone), were a pioneering funk band in the 60s and 70s who merged rock with funk, had a sexually and racially integrated line-up, and who famously moved from optimistic party anthems and hippy idealism to drug-induced frustration and paranoia.
Sly and the Family Stone were formed in 1966 when Sly Stone merged his struggling band with the struggling band of his brother Freddie, and added bassist Larry Graham. A debut album received good reviews but didn't sell well, so they were reluctantly persuaded to record an overtly commercial single to boost their reputation. Sly came up with the goods in January 1968 with the raucous party anthem "Dance to the Music", which got to No.8 in the pop charts and influenced the sound of soul music for the next several years. There are a few interesting innovations in just this one song: it is performed by a racially integrated group and with instrumental participation by women, it included rock guitar parts in a funk song, and there are four lead singers who take turns to sing.
This was followed in 1969 by their first classic album, Stand!, which included hit singles "Everyday People/Sing a Simple Song" and "I Want to Take You Higher". It eventually sold over three million copies and was followed by a famous Woodstock appearance, and another hit single: "Hot Fun in the Summertime". But internal differences were arising and illicit drug use was increasing at this time, so in the following two years only one single was released. "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (December 69) is important for two reasons: it prominently featured Larry Graham's new slap-bass method that would become a standard in funk; and it signified the beginning of Sly and the Family Stone's darker period, as they expressed their frustration that the hippy ideals they once offered, of peace and love for all mankind, weren't working.
For much of 70/71, Sly Stone sank deeper into a drug habit and retreated from recording duties. A comeback single, "Family Affair", reached No.1 in late 1971, before the November release of their most acclaimed work: There's a Riot Goin' On. An album of melancholy and frustration, it announced the passing of 60s idealism and the new reality of widespread socio-economic problems. Despite the dark themes, it reached No.1 and is regarded as one of the greatest albums of the decade.
Subsequent albums, such as Fresh (1973) and Small Talk (1974), Fresh is now considered as an important album in the development of funk, while their work overall is regarded as highly influential for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Michael Jackson. Eventually the band fizzled out as members became increasingly frustrated with Sly's erratic and unreliable behaviour, and bookings for live shows dried up. Officially splitting in 1975, some of the key members have since reformed and were touring Europe with Sly in 2007.

"Jimi Hendrix, Live At The Isle of Wight - Blue Wild Angel - 180 Gram 3 LP Set #d
JIMI HENDRIX - BLUE WILD ANGEL - LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT -
MCA 3-LP Set is a piece of musical audiophile history of this classic recording. The authorized Hendrix Family Edition - Numbered Limited Edition 180 Gram Triple LP Set (Only Vinyl Pressing ever) - 18 songs - entire 120 minute concert -
Includes 6 Rare unreleased performances -
Features Full Color Booklet with rare photos and Liner Notes
Jimi Hendrix’ ISLE OF WIGHT concert of August 1970 was a historic occasion, it being his last major performance before his untimely death. He had returned to the country where he had skyrocketed to fame and gave his first performance in almost two years when he headlined the ISLE OF WIGHT Festival.
Less than three weeks later, he would be dead. As such, it has acquired a mythic status over time. This triple LP Set marks the first complete release of Hendrix’s set at the Festival, a warts-and-all recording that reveals a guitar legend in good humor, yet restlessly exploring the broader musical directions he’d just laid down on sessions for what would become FIRST RAYS OF THE NEW RISING SUN (initially released posthumously as FREEDOM).
Backed by EXPERIENCE drummer Mitch Mitchell and BAND OF GYPSIES Bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix ranges from the improvisatory cacophony of “Machine Gun” and re-workings of his standard blues workouts “Red House” and “Hey Joe” to renditions of “Dolly Dagger,” “Ezy Rider,” “Freedom,” and “Hey Baby” that trade on the more rhythmic R&B and jazz influences he’d diligently worked into his music. At times jagged, and straining the limitations of the trio format (Hendrix had publicly mused about working with a big band shortly before his death), it is nonetheless a passionate, intriguing clue as to Hendrix’s true ambitions and potential beyond his initial hype and stardom.

"Spirit, Spirit / Clear Spirit (2 LPs)"
CLEAR SPIRIT - The Family That Plays Together" (their 2nd LP - yes, I said "LP") was released back in 1968 and an amazing unique sound - this is one group that had few peers...they were years ahead of most of the music scene back then...and, light years ahead of the music scene today (yet, somehow, they remain sadly kind of obscure in the musical scheme of things - almost like a rare gem, hiding out and waiting to be discovered - again! Except for those who have always treasured their important, barrier-breaking contributions to rock & roll).
Eclectic, melodic, original, whimsical, thought-provoking...these are just a few words to describe the myriad of colors Spirit sound-painted with. This album is just as brilliant as the other three - a new adventure, a departure, yet completely familiar to any fan of Spirit's catalogue of music.
Check out rockers like "Dark Eyed Woman", "Ground Hog" or "I'm Truckin'" and then simmer down with beautiful, almost tearful melodies like "Give A Life, Take A Life" and moody, provocative instrumentals like "Ice" & the title track...you'll be blown away! Bonus cuts are excellent too... "Fuller Brush Man" is sheer whit & genius! I believe this was one band that recorded lots more material than they ever released, so we can only hope for more magic from the vaults of Spririt.
Also, after listening to any of their first (4) LP's (with all five original members), you will understand why so many British prog bands of the late 60's/early 70's would site Spirit as a definitive influence -- they left an electric legacy for our modern-day rock & roll-starved souls to continuously rediscover and immerse ourselves in!
SPIRIT - What a magically engrossing affair this is. Spirit was certainly a very special band from a very interesting time in rock history. The group's albums are a compelling blend of psychedelic rock and jazz, and I find their adventurous allure a constant delight.
Drummer Ed Cassidy completely understood jazz and rock. This is why the transitions between the rock rhythms and the jazz rhythms are seamless and utterly convincing. Much of his drumming on the album suggests far more than he's actually playing, while his perfect choices time and again yield the perfect complement to the music. Listen closely to what he plays on "Straight Arrow"; always interesting, always brilliant. Randy California's guitar work is magnificent throughout. Oh, the sound he gets on his solo in "Mechanical World"--what an incredibly delicious tone! And, the guitar harmonies at the end of "Gramophone Man" are simply divine.
Most of the tunes were written by Jay Ferguson, and are fantastic vehicles for the band to show off their unique style. "Girl In Your Eye" floats along beautifully, with sitar shadowing the melody. Listen closely to the guitar line in "Taurus" and you'll hear where the main line during the verse in Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" came from.
On the jazzy "Elijah," the final original-album cut, we hear something intriguing: even when the band goes to straight improvisation, they don't lose their musical identity; they still sound like Spirit.
Do you love psychedelia, the 60s, great and imaginative music? Get this. These guys won't disappoint. (The delightful and informative liner notes were written by Randy California in 1996.

"Sly And The Family Stone, Life - 140 Gram Vinyl"
SLY & THE FAMILY STONE - LIFE - 140 Gram Limited Edition classic LP high-definition Virgin Vinyl pressing for superior fidelity.
First, let me say that this recording is non-stop fun and brilliance. Life is Sly at his best. It's one of his most consistent releases and my personal favorite. Now, on to setting the "record" straight. Amazon's mis-informed editorial reviewer erroneously puts Life's release BEFORE The Family Stone's breakthrough album, Dance To The Music. Anyone experiencing the original vinyl issues of Sly's discography as they happened remembers the chronology: A Whole New Thing (1967); Dance To The Music (Spring/Summer 1968); Life (Fall/Winter 1968).
The title track from DTTM hit the singles charts in Summer 1968. Life was the superior sounding follow-up LP that offered funk rock and pop at its finest (M'Lady, Into My Own Thing, Fun, I'm An Animal, etc.). Jane Is A Groupee is arguably one of the most explosive cuts that Sly ever tracked. Life's title song was released as the first single from the record, but failed to follow DTTM up the charts. The group would later return with hit singles like Everyday People, Hot Fun In The Summertime, Everybody Is A Star and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).

"Sly & The Family Stone, There's A Riot Goin' On"
Classic Analog LP Pressing - Out of Print
Certain albums both define a specific point in time and yet manage to be timeless. Such an album is THERE‘S A RIOT GOIN' ON. After a few records of sexy, sunny, but never cavalier funk/pop, the twisted genius of Sly Stone turned dark, moody, reflective, angry, but no less funky for the contemplation. Stone created an album that spoke not only to the turmoil gripping America in 1971, but also to the chaos whirling around his increasingly drugged personal life. This is an album of dangerous beauty, where even the hit ("Family Affair") is guarded and haunting

The first album attributed to Sly Stone rather than Sly and the Family Stone. One of the better straight-up funk albums of the 70's even though it's his most underrated. The title track, a career highlight, was an impressive single peaking at number three on the R&B chart.
Originally released in 1975. Tracks include: I Get High On You - Crossword Puzzle -. Thats Lovin You -Who Do You Love - Green Eyed Monster Girl - . Organize - Le Lo Li - . My World - . So Good To Me - . Greed

"Temptations, Cloud Nine"
CLOUD NINE
When this album was originally released in early '69, it was a gamble. Could the Temptations, known as smooth melodic crooners of love songs, successfully reinvent themselves as contemporaries of Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, and the Chambers Brothers, with their psychedelic rock and soul sounds? The answer was YES. CLOUD NINE, this masterpiece by produced by Norman Whitfield, the most soulful producer to ever come out of Motown, is one of my favorite LPs by the Temptations. The grittiness of "Cloud Nine", the title song and the album opener (and the first single from the album, released in late 1968) demands that you pay attention to what the Tempts are saying. Songwriter Barrett Strong's words come to life as newest Temptation Dennis Edwards tells the story of growing up poor in the inner city...and the debate about this song continues to this day. Was the song about getting high, or just changing your way of thinking? A funky rendition of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" takes Gladys Knight and the Pips' version, strips it down to the rhythm track, and emphasizes the Tempts' harmonies above everything else. I LOVE the scatting on this track!! The nine minute and thirty-eight second version of "Runaway Child, Running Wild" is worth the price of the LP alone. Simply relentless, with the sound of a child crying for his mother. What was really great about this LP was the use of multiple vocalists singing different parts at the same time on each song. Prior to this LP, you'd basically have David Ruffin, or sometimes Eddie Kendricks singing the lead and the rest of the guys singing "Oooh, waaa" or "Oh baby" in the background. However on these three cuts on CLOUD NINE you might hear Dennis, then Eddie, then Paul, the Melvin, then Otis...all on the same song! I just love it.
The second part of the LP, to me, seemed to let Temptations' fans know that they could still sing the love ballads in the way that made them famous, even though David Ruffin was no longer in the group by then. There are some very nice remakes on it ("Love Is A Hurtin' Thing", "Hey Girl") plus some beautiful original tunes ("I Need Your Lovin'" with Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals, "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", a Paul Williams standout lead, "Why Did She Have To Leave Me" and others). A daring bit of work that forever changed Motown, and a definite part of their history, since "Cloud Nine" was the very first Motown tune ever to win a Grammy. Get it, and you too will be on CLOUD NINE!

"Sly & Fly Family Stone, Fresh"
Classic Analog LP Pressing. Also available in 180 gram, see 180 gram section
Coming as it did on the heels of the There's a Riot Goin' On, 1973's Fresh surprised a lot of Sly fans by actually living up to its name. The weariness and paranoia of Riot are totally missing in action, replaced by a relaxed optimism that seems to shine from every note of tracks like "If You Want Me to Stay" and "In Time." The band--newly buttressed by the rhythm section of Rusty Allen and Andy Newmark--plays it loose and funky, and Sly's oddball sense of humor resurfaces on a cover of Doris Day's "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)."

THIS IS OUR LAST COPY FOREVER OF THIS EDITION
Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's contemplative film Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a backdrop that is moody and evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen tracks incorporate threads from material found on Gabriel's 1982 Security set, including "Close Up," which makes use of keyboard passages from "Family Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of "The Rhythm of the Heat" and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo.
Material especially written for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night," the tribal "Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all instrumentals and its meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening for the more adventurous.
The transfer was from the original two track 1/2" analog master tapes provided by Peter Gabriel's Real World for cutting the master lacquers. The detail, clarity and bottom octave weight are superb!

ONE/CAR - The first of three solo albums by the ex-Genesis singer, all to be officially released as only "Peter Gabriel". In time, the three would take on "also-known-as" nicknames based on the front-cover artwork of each. This volume is usually referred to as Peter Gabriel (I, Car). In 1977 there was much anticipation for the first solo effort from the flamboyant Gabriel. Three years had passed since his swan song with Genesis. He had certainly exited on a high note indeed with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. While fans shouldn't have worried about the survival of Genesis without their original lead singer, neither would they be disappointed in his solo debut. Produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper), he addressed the split with his band mates in the allegoric hit "Solsbury Hill", while retaining the art-rock sensibilities he had pioneered. The balance of the album, transferred from the artist's personal original master tapes, includes other concert favorites, such as "Moribund The Burgermeister", "Modern Love", "Excuse Me", "Humdrum", "Slowburn", "Waiting For the Big One", "Down The Dolce Vita" (featuring the London Symphony Orchestra) and "Here Comes The Flood". .

On this, Peter Gabriel's second album, the songs "On the Air" and "D.I.Y." are stunning slices of modern rock circa 1978, bubbling with streamlined production that nevertheless sounds as large as a stadium. THREE - Generally regarded as Peter Gabriel's finest record, his third album finds him crafting material that's artier, stronger, more song oriented than before. Consider its ominous opener, the controlled menace of "Intruder." He's never found such a scary sound, yet it's a sexy scare, one that is undeniably alluring, and he keeps this going throughout the record. Even radio favorites like "I Don't Remember" and "Games Without Frontiers" are hardly cheerful, spiked with paranoia and suspicion. He wound up having albums that sold more, or generated bigger hits, but this third Peter Gabriel album remains a masterpiece. Transferred, for the first time ever, from the original 30-ips 1/4" master on Bernie Grundman's all-tube cutting system, this Classic 200-gram pressing, packaged in a deluxe gatefold die-cut jacket with printed inner sleeves, is the definitive LP version of this giant album.

FOUR - Gabriel’s fourth album, which was titled Security in the U.S., continues where the third album left off, sharing some of the same dense production and sense of cohesion, yet lightening the atmosphere and expanding the sonic palette somewhat. The gloom that permeates the third album has been alleviated. and while this is still decidedly somber and serious music, it has a brighter feel, partially derived from Gabriel’s dabbling in African and Latin rhythms. These are generally used as tonal coloring, enhancing the synthesizers that form the basic musical bed of the record. 4 flows easily and enticingly with songs like the eerie “San Jacinto,” “I Have the Touch” and “Shock the Monkey.” It remains a powerful listen, one of the better records in Gabriel’s catalog.

SO - Peter Gabriel introduced his fifth studio album So with “Sledgehammer,” an Otis Redding-inspired soul-pop raver that was easily his catchiest, happiest single to date. Needless to say, it was also his most accessible, and, in that sense it was a good introduction to So, the catchiest, happiest record he ever cut. “Sledgehammer” propelled the record toward blockbuster status, and Gabriel had enough songs with single potential to keep it there. There was “Big Time,” another colorful dance number; “Don’t Give Up,” a moving duet with Kate Bush; “Red Rain,” a stately anthem popular on album rock radio; and “In Your Eyes,” Gabriel’s greatest love song which achieved genuine classic status after being featured in Cameron Crowe’s classic, Say Anything. This release features the additional tune “We Do What We’re Told (Milgrames 37)” that was originally not on the Geffen vinyl issue in 1986.

PASSION - DOUBLE LP SET - Passion is in actuality Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ, re-titled as a result of legal barriers; regardless of its name, however, there’s no mistaking the records stirring power. Like much of Gabriel’s solo work, the album is a product of his continuing fascination with world music, which he employs here to create an exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric tapestry of sound perfectly evocative of the film’s resonant spiritual drama. Passion achieves a cumulative effect clearly Middle Eastern in origin, yet its brilliant fusion of ancient and modern music ultimately transcends both geography and time. Remarkably dramatic, even visual, it is not only Gabriel’s best film work but also deserving of serious consideration as his finest music of any kind.

BIRDY - Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's contemplative film
Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a backdrop that is moody and
evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen tracks incorporate threads from material
found on Gabriel's 1982 Security set, including "Close Up," which makes use of
keyboard passages from "Family Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of
"The Rhythm of the Heat" and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo.
Material especially written for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night,"
the tribal "Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of
future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all instrumentals and its
meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening for the more adventurous.
