RELOAD - Japanese exclusive reissue of 1997 album, packaged in a miniature LP gatefold sleeve, features 13 tracks - For many heavy metal fans, Metallica epitomizes the genre, especially for those listeners who remember the band's fast-and-furious 1983 debut, Kill 'Em All. As a result, their continued foray into a more stripped-down, laid-back sound with this album has met a mixed response. However, there's enough innovation and just plain strange stuff on this album to make it worth a listen. The creepy "The Memory Remains" is perfectly accentuated by Marianne Faithfull's backing vocals, and "Where the Wild Things Are" features the multilayered vocals and guitars that Metallica is famous for, albeit at about half their usual speed. The opening ("Fuel") and closing ("Fixxxer") tracks are especially strong, and intermixed with some slower, country-inflected tunes are the obnoxious rockers that made Metallica the long-running success they are

10cc's "Bloody Tourists" was originally released in September of 1978--this was the follow up to 1977's "Deceptive Bends", & it was the second 10cc record without Godley & Creme who left the group in 1976 & continued to work as duo. Certainly their departure had a big impact on 10cc--they contributed largely to the songwriting & overall sound of the group. However, the other 2 original 10cc members, Eric Stewart & Graham Gouldman, were extremely talented dudes in their own right, and they're basically running the show on here, and the result is a brilliant album. I realize that this album is typically considered a disappointment compared to "Deceptive Bends", the first album without Godley & Creme, but it's actually quite the opposite--Stewart & Gouldman were considerably off their game on "Deceptive Bends", but here they bounced back in a big way, & 10cc's work would remain consistently strong/ brilliant until their initial breakup in 1983/ 1984, making this album quite a bit like a rebirth for them. Rick Fenn, Stuart Tosh, Duncan Mackay, & Paul Burgess were additional band members at this point, but apart from "Dreadlock Holiday" (as well as its non-LP b-side "Nothing Can Move Me", included here as a bonus track) which is credited as having been produced by the whole group, the entire album was produced by Stewart & Gouldman, & also, between the two of them, they were responsible for all of the songwriting apart from just a few co-writes from other members.

METALLIC - THE BLACK ALBUM - Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," and "God That Failed," despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with "Unforgiven," and proves that they can write a ballad with "Nothing Else Matters," which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high-energy album despite its laid-back approach, and is in many ways superior to the previous . . . AND JUSTICE FOR ALL which was weakened by overly complicated song structures and mediocre production

KILL EM ALL - Japanese exclusive reissue of 1983 album packaged in a miniature LP sleeve features 10 tracks - While not as timeless as Ride the Lightning or Master Puppets, Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is still a fine piece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre. Fusing the rapid-fire attack of bands like Motorhead with a guitar style reminiscent of such British heavy metal bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Metallica essentially created a new kind of metal. Several of the songs from this 1983 album have since become classics, including "Seek & Destroy", "The Four Horsemen", and "Jump in the Fire". The songwriting isn't as sophisticated as on Metallica's later releases; still, it's a great listen, and essential for any heavy metal fan

Having listened to so many albums from the early 70s to now, this is undoubtedly a seminal work to remind yourself of a more glorious past. this was recorded at the writing/songmaking peak of the team of Godley and Creme, and before their self-implosion after the release of their next album "How Dare You." Why buy this, you say? The answer is the MUSIC, of course! The very first song, "One Nuit In Paris," is as strange as it is brilliant. If someone doesn't make a video out of this one day, I'll be shocked. The entire story is told in three vignettes in less than 5 minutes, but you think you'd been there all night yourself. The very next song is the classic "I'm Not In Love," which is as bittersweet and beautiful as any song can get, and Good God, they got this song RIGHT. Denial can be a beautiful thing. The next track, "Blackmail," is a brilliant parody of fame, sex and trust, if you can believe that. "The Second Sitting For The Last Supper" is a cool rocker that inflicts guilt on you and makes you feel free at the same time. "Brand New Day" slows the album down a bit, and is the most 70s sounding song, I have to admit, but it works for 1975. (This song is the most Queen-like, or maybe Queen stole that 3 part harmony from 10CC? Listen for yourself.) "Flying Junk" is a short hard song that leaps right out of the box swinging, and reminds you that the bad men still exist, and live pretty well! "Life Is A Minestrone" is so full of nonsense that it makes you wish it was you sipping tea with Minnie Mouse at the Taj Mahal by the end of the song. The last song, "The Film Of My Love," is so sappy and so goofy, but it reminds me so much of Monty Python - it should have ended one of their movies. You can apply any of these songs to anything, and it pretty much works. This CD remaster has two additional tracks, which are unreleased B-Sides: "Channnel Swimmer", B-side to "Life Is A Minestrone," about a man swimming to meet his love on the other side of the English Channel, and in his lust to see her, forgets that he can't swim and drowns instead.
