Singer Allan Clarke was one of the most versatile vocalists of the British Invasion, able to pull off cute pop vignettes ("Bus Stop"), whoop it up like the original rockabilly ("Long Cool Woman"), lament majestically ("King Midas in Reverse"), and add distinctive blues colorings to the band's R&B covers ("Just One Look"). All in all, the Hollies were pretty good album artists, but Greatest Hits is what you really need. "The Isley Brothers, Go For Your Guns - 180 Gram"180 Gram Limited Edition Analog Virgin Vinyl. This album is a great example of the great music made in the 70's that never made it to the radio. The Isley Brothers have always been makers of great music. They have always been colorblind in making their music, it wasn't disco, it wasn't even funk in the way that many people think of the genre. This album like the rest of the work they did in the late seventies was rocked up funk, suitable for clubs, parties and dances. This history-making family, even with all the success it's had, the critical acclaim, and the adoration of its loyal fans, is still probably the most under-rated act of the "rock era." How influential were songs like "Shout," "Twist And Shout," "This Old Heart Of Mine," and "It's Your Thing"? And that was before phase II of the Isleys story began. Now add to the list "That Lady," "Fight The Power," and "For The Love Of You." This was a living legend of a group at the time "Go For Your Guns" was released in 1977. This album featured a #1 R&B hit ("The Pride"), two indespensible concert items ("Footsteps In The Dark" and "Voyage To Atlantis"), and a rockin', raucous two-part single. "Livin' In The Life". It made #4 R&B. The b-side, "Go For Your Guns," is an instrumental of "Livin' In The Life," with lead guitarist Ernie Isley given free rein. Two tracks remain: "Tell Me When You Need It Again" features the group in a stripped-down funk groove. "Climbing Up The Ladder" is a pretty clear manifesto for the group at that time. The Brothers were undeniably popular, selling millions of albums each time out. But the ladder of respect is a fickle one. For as much as The Isleys have done for rock and roll (and plain rock) music, you never hear them played on so-called "Classic Rock" stations. Not even on acid-hot rock performances like "Climbing Up The Ladder" or "Hope You Feel Better Love." Or on across-the-board hits like "That Lady" and "Fight The Power."

COLLECTORS SEEK OUT ORIGINAL EDITIONS WITH ORIGINAL STICKERS AND YOU SHOULD NOT MISS THIS 180 GRAM WITH THE ORIGINAL MARKETING STICKER 180 GRAM VINYL EDITION WHICH DATES BACK BEFORE THE 150 GRAM RELEASES AND THEIR NEW 180 GRAM RELEASES. This mid-period effort is effectively The Monkees "White Album." Given collective production credit and individual allotments of studio time, Mickey, Davy and Mike each held separate sessions to produce their contributions. Peter Tork, though pictured, is basically absent from the original album. Nesmith's contributions are the real stars, including brilliant psychedelic influences on "Auntie's Municipal Court," featuring layered, droning guitars and a filtered lead vocal from Mickey. "Tapioca Tundra" melds Latin rhythms with space-age production touches, beautifully recorded stereo guitars and a wonderfully memorable melody. Further out, Nesmith salutes the music of dusty 78s on the monaural "Magnolia Simms" and unwinds on the lengthy experimental rock of "Writing Wrongs." The diversity of his work is hugely impressive. "The Poster" ventures into the sort of harmonies made popular by the Hollies and Bee Gees. The only truly bright spots are John Stewart's "Daydream Believer," the Monkees last #1 single, and Boyce and Hart's "Valleri." The cautionary tale, "Zor and Zam," closes the album with a dramatic tale of kings unable to war. The bonus tracks provide two glimpses of the soon-to-depart Peter Tork. "Alvin," an acapella piece that was originally to introduce "Daydream Believer," and the legendarily expensive production of "Lady's Baby." The latter is more famous for its cost than its content, which is a Lovin' Spoonful-Buffalo Springfield-Mama's & Papa's-ish ode to Tork's live-in lady's baby. Two more Davy ballads ("I'm Gonna Try" and "The Girl I Left Behind Me") are, well, two more Davy Ballads. Finally, an early mix of "P.O. Box 9847" is interesting for its changes (most notably a Moog synthesizer in place of the strings), but doesn't stand up to the final mix. The group dynamic forged on "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.," was all but dissipated by this fifth effort. The result is a middling album with some fine tracks by Michael Nesmith and a handful of stellar hit singles. As a "band," however, the Monkees had clearly peaked.
