" Eddie Lockjaw Davis with Harry "Sweets" Edison , Jaw Breakers"Edward Davis (March 2, 1922-November 3, 1986), who performed and recorded as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He played with Cootie Williams, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie, as well as leading his own bands and making many recordings as a leader. He played in the swing, bop, hard bop, Latin jazz, and soul jazz genres. Some of his recordings of the 1940s also could be classified as rhythm and blues. His 1946 band, Eddie Davis and His Beboppers, featured Fats Navarro, Al Haig, Huey Long, Gene Ramey and Denzil Best. In the 1950s he was playing with Sonny Stitt, while from 1960 to 1962 he and fellow tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin led a quintet. From the mid-60s, Davis and Griffin also performed together as part of The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, along with other, mainly European, jazz musicians. I recently fell in love with these two amazing players, just these two cats, "Sweets" Edison and "Lockjaw" Davis. I knew Lockjaw through Johnny Griffin's records (they recorded a lot together with marvellous results), being the Griff one of my alltime favourite tenors. Lockjaw is that kind of tenor, you know, like Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, with great "muscles" in his sound and a lot of variety in his expressions. But Sweets is Just a recent discovery for me. Later going back to search for things from him in my collection I found a lot of records with him inside but I never paid to much attention to him I have to admit. And what a shame that has been! He's been with Count Basie and he's a swinger more than a bopper, a more traditional kind of player, but I think that in his case, as in the case of all pure artists, it's not a matter of styles because his talent is so pure that goes beyond boundaries. As a matter of fact Sweets plays if not pure bebop, sure a modern idiom all his own. Something which stands in its own right between traditional Count Basie Jazz and bebop, with impressive results. This record is amazing in my opinion. It is another gem in the immense Jazz catalogue. The music is a sort of hard bop (it's 1962) very infected with the blues but with the bebop discoveries too. The program is very interesting. I point out the last tune, Close your eyes, a minor swinger with GORGEOUS solos from the guys. Uh, the full line up is; Sweets, Lockjaw with Hugh Lawson piano, Ike Isaac doublebass, Clarence Johnston drums. This is our last copy forever and the title has a bruised corner underneath the factory sealed. It looks like it occured with the sealing process. There's a classic episode of The Little Rascals where one of the gang can't join everybody else on the ballfield because he has to stay home with his younger brother, who has the croup. "I can't come out and play," he whines. "I've got to stay home and grease Wheezer!" Nobody at Geffen Records knows whether this was the inspiration in naming Weezer, but it makes sense. Like many of their peers, the members of the Los Angeles quartet seem to have spent their formative years in front of the TV; when they were a little older, they were just as entranced by college rock. Finally, ala the Rascals, one of the gang said, "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!," and the result is Weezer's uplifting, unpretentious, and extremely endearing debut. The self-titled Weezer is lean and mean at 10 short, punchy tunes, but nearly every one is powered by a larger-than-life chorus or a simple but effective lyric. "Undone-The Sweater Song" uses an unraveling sweater as a metaphor for a relationship on the rocks; "Buddy Holly" pays heartfelt tribute to the '50s rocker, and "In the Garage" paints a scene of suburban teens jamming while surrounded by posters of Kiss. Producer Ric Ocasek of Cars fame pushes the vocals and rhythm guitars, and this bare-bones approach may earn comparisons to fellow garage-pop band Green Day. "Otis Redding, The Soul Album - DISCLAIMER - PHOTO SHOWS 180 GRAM - IT IS NOT"THE SOUL ALBUM - Although Redding was a great songwriter (he gave us Aretha's "Respect" and Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music"--'nuff said), he partially made a reputation for himself as a great interpreter of other people's material, ranging from Beatles and Stones covers to "Louie Louie" to standards like "Try a Little Tenderness," which had originally been a hit for Bing Crosby. And unlike other soul artists of the time, including the great Jackie Wilson, Redding--with the help, of course, of guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, and drummer Al Jackson--could take even schlock, at least in R&B terms (i.e., "The Tennessee Waltz"), and transcend it, making it his own. Otis makes all 11 tracks here his own--not that any of them were ever considered schlock. But many, including Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang," Roy Head's "Treat Her Right," and Wilson Pickett's "634-5789," were closely associated with their originators. Redding's cover of Smokey Robinson's "Scratch My Back" is so awesome that it makes you forget the Miracles' original. The Soul Album is sometimes underrated because it's a covers album--but it's a classic covers album

"The Guess Who, 2 Titles - Road Food and Rockin' - Original LPs"THE GUESS WHO - THE ORIGINAL RELEASES ROAD FOOD & ROCKIN A 2 LP SET - DECADES OUT OF PRINT The Guess Who were a Canadian rock band who achieved international success with the 1970 hit singles "No Time" and "American Woman". Formed in Winnipeg in 1960, they had a Canadian No.1 in 1965 with "Shakin' All Over" while still called Chad Allan & the Expressions. But the records were credited to "Guess Who?", as a marketing gimmick designed to get the public guessing that the song might be a secret side-project by a big-name star. By the time their real identity was revealed, they were so well known as "Guess Who?" that they were forced to take it on as their real name. In 1968 they changed the name to "The Guess Who" (without a question mark), and they enjoyed a US Top 10 hit the following year with "These Eyes". Their biggest success came with the 1970 release of American Woman: the title track was the first Canadian song to top the US charts, and it topped the Canadian chart and made an impression in the UK too. "No Time" also went to No.1 in Canada, and made the US Top 5. Guitarist and songwriter Randy Bachman then left to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and the band struggled to replicate their earlier success, though they still had several minor hits. "Clap for the Wolfman" (1974) was a Top 10 hit on both sides of the border, but the band broke up the following year. THE ORIGINAL RELEASES OF ROAD FOOD & ROCKIN STILL IN THEIR ORIGINAL SEALS (but each has a small cutout in jacket). Rockin , originally released in 1972, represented a back-to-basics album for The Guess Who. The twin-guitars of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw power one of the band s hardest rocking releases. Yet in true early 70s Guess Who fashion, Rockin features an all-inclusive definition of rock, from the heavy riffs of opening track and single Heartbroken Bopper, the 50s-styled boogies Get Your Ribbons On and Running Bear, the harmony-driven Smoke Big Factory, the socially conscious Guns, Guns, Guns, and the psychedelic multipart suite that closed the original album. AEROSMITH are one of the few arena-sized bands still capable of playing it down-to-earth when the occasion calls. For HONKIN' ON BOBO, the boys return to their bar band roots with this set of classic blues and soul covers generously peppered with harmonica, horns, and boogie-woogie piano. For years, AEROSMITH sprinkled similar songs on their LPs, but devoting a whole disc to material associated with John Lee Hooker, Mississippi Fred McDowell takes nerve--and they've got it to spare here. "Shame, Shame, Shame" is a finger-waggin', hip-shakin' romp, while "Baby, Please Don't Go" starts out spooky, then escalates as Steven Tyler builds to a full-throttle holler with Joe Perry's guitar blazing his backside all the way.
