"Thelonious Monk, Misterioso"Thelonious Monk Misterioso - 140 Gram LP The most impresssive point to be made about his record is that it is a product of precisely the same night's work as the earlier Riverside album, Thelonious Action; the two are in all respects a matched set. On the evening of August 7, 1958, recording equipment was rather precariously set up in the always-overcrowed Five Spot, the room where Monk had made his triumphant recent return to the New York club scene and was now appearing with a new quartet featuring Johnny Griffin. This turned out to be the first successful live recording of Thelonious (he had rejected the results of a night's work here a month earlier), and the substantial number of Monk-approved performances were readily programmed onto two full and equally memorable albums. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track Listings 1. "Thelonious Monk, Solo Monk"When the great bandleader and jazz composer made this lovely, lightweight solo piano album in late 1964 and early 1965, he unexpectedly turned to standards more than to his own twisty, harmonically dense compositions (although there are a couple of those here, too, notably "Ruby, My Dear" and "Ask Me Now"). And not the usual jazz standards, either--more lounge-singer and Tin Pan Alley standards, like "These Foolish Things" and Bing Crosby's "I Surrender, Dear." In an unusually cheerful, relaxed mood, Monk plays with the sharp, tinkley attack, octave trills, and rock-solid left-hand rhythms of the New Orleans stride piano players he grew up listening to, but he takes advantage of the absence of a band to mess with tempo, too. Thelonious' uncompromising performances, along with major league support (Art Blakey and Oscar Pettiford) and strong material, helped to turn this concept into lastingly superior jazz. Particularly notable are Monk's sharp thrusts of humor on such well-worn pieces as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Tea for Two." The album's impact was strengthened by one of the most unique covers ever devised. "Thelonious Monk, Underground"Classic Analog LP Pressing. UNDERGROUND - Underground was recorded in 1967, about 20 years into the career of this wholly distinctive and unorthodox pianist-composer. Whenever the understated saxophone talents of Charlie Rouse accompany Thelonious Monk, one is assured of an invigorating set of music--and this collection is no exception. Supported by Larry Gales on bass and the inimitable Ben Riley on drums, Monk and Rouse elaborate on immortal compositions like "Ugly Beauty." On "In Walked Bud," the quartet is joined by vocalist Jon Hendricks. With jagged themes and unusual variations of meter and key, Underground showcases an aging Monk's still-brilliant eccentricity on the piano. "Tina Brooks, True Blue"Classic Analog LP Pressing. Tina Brooks sound is unique: a bluesy, crying tone that is instantly recognizable. This release from 1960 contains top notch musicianship from a very young Freddie Hubbard, and the brilliant Duke Jordan, who is absolutely in tune with Brook's vision here. Sadly, although Brooks recorded four sessions for Blue Note, this was the only one released in his lifetime. After hearing this, you will want to pick up Jackie McLean's "Jackie's Bag" and Freddie Hubbard's "Open Sesame" -- both prominently feature Tina Brooks playing and compositions from around the same time as "True Blue". He did not consider it one of his accomplishments. An expert on accompanists, Tony Bennett's flawless ear told him that Evans' sensitivity, touch, and deep harmonic wisdom would make him a perfect collaborator. In such circumstances, with no orchestra for cover and no rhythm section for buoyancy, a singer's control, intonation and steadiness are in bold relief. None of Bennett's recordings discloses more clearly his mastery of those elements. "Tony Williams, The Joy Of Flying"TONY WILLIAMS - THE JOY OF FLYING - COLUMBIA RECORDS JC35705 OUT OF PRINT PRESSING FACTORY SEALED LP Tony Williams' classic fusion album, originally released in 1979. THE ALBUM features such jazz luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, Stanley Clarke, Cecil Taylor, George Benson, Jan Hammer, Brian Auger, Ronnie Montrose and Michael Brecker. This album is ... excellent! This killer shuffle on "Going Far" is just great. Jan Hammer does a great job too. The second song "Hip Skip" is an awesome funky song which has Jan Hammer, George Benson, funky bassist Paul Jackson, Michael Brecker and Ralph McDonald. "Hittin on 6" is funky too and has Herbie and Stanley playin'. Now comes the hard-rock part of the album: "Open Fire" - a real hard rockin' song. My favorite song(out of 7 killer cuts) is "Tony" by Stanley Clarke. Gotta love Herbie's playing and Tony's tight grooves.. "ERIS" is another song which has Jan Hammer doing Keyboards and all synths and Tony's awesome drumming - but now it's not funky like on "Going far", now its rocking. "Coming Home" is a beatiful song.
