Only available on this limited edition STICKER pressing. Bright, swinging West Coast sound from the early fifties. Gerry Mulligan began 1953 with these four sides featuring Chet Baker on trumpet, no piano. It was to be a big month for Mulligan. Within four weeks after these renditions, he had recorded two dozen classics by his Quartet and Tentette. Lady is a Tramp and Turnstile back to back on a 78 RPM single got strong airplay on the West Coast. Baker is superb throughout as is drummer,Chico Hamilton. Paul Desmond's debut as a session leader came with these recordings from two dates in the Fall of 1954. Desmond, bassist, Bob Bates and drummer, Joe Dodge, were three-fourths of the Brubeck Quartet; San Franciso based David Van Kriedt (tenor sax) and Dick Collin (trumpet) play on a couple of the tracks. Guitarist Bernie Kessel and the singers join in when Desmond, Bates, and Dodge recorded the rest of these titles in L.A. "Gigi Gryce, Rat Race Blues"GIGI GRYCE RAT RACE BLUES LP FACTORY SEALED LP - Analog vinyl pressing for superior fidelity. Gigi Gryce is one of the best jazz musicians that too few people have ever heard of, and this blues-steeped album contains some of his best work. Though his career barely spanned a decade before he quit the jazz life to become a respected schoolteacher, Gryce was beloved as a performer, writer, and human being by the musicians he worked with. There is no such thing as a bad Gigi Gryce performance or composition. Espousing that mantra, I picked this recording up. Strange Feelin' and Boxer's Blues are the standouts, but every song is a gem. Gigi Gryce is best known as a writer and arranger, but this recording proves him to be a fine player as well. As the title suggests, the five tracks on this LP are all based on blues. There is some great work as well by the seldom-heard Richard Williams on trumpet; my favorite passages are those where the two horns engage in spirited interplay. Track Listings 1. Rat Race Blues 2. FACTORY SEALED LP Gil Evans will forever be remembered as the arranger for those classic Miles Davis orchestral albums, but Evans led his own orchestra from the '60s until his death in 1988. A true fusion of jazz's free-ranging leanings and Hendrix's psychedelic and blues jams, Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix is a masterstroke for Evans, who was actually supposed to do an album with Hendrix himself. Evans completely revamps classics like "Crosstown Traffic," "Voodoo Chile," and "Little Wing," twisting these tunes in a way that might even blow Hendrix's mind. Rather than turning the session into guitar wank fest, the horn-heavy group (which prominently features saxophonist David Sanborn) really comes up with something different. And although the early synthesizers and production aesthetic makes this sound dated, it should still appeal to a new generation of fans. People have rediscovered producer David Axelrod--Gil Evans is just as skilled at mixing jazz and rock, but he's even further out (as the crazed tuba solo on "Voodoo Chile" attests). 1. Angel 2. "Gil Scott Heron, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"GIL SCOTT HERON - THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED - FACTORY SEALED LIMITED EDTION COLORED VINYL PRESSING Soulful, melodic and biting social commentary circa 1974 is what you'll find on "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Gil Scott-Heron pulls no punches in his assessment of America. This is not some feel good R&B or cartoonish gansta rap. Social protest and commentary are the order on this album. Kind of like the Public Enemy of his day, Gil Scott-Heron stays grounded in the real and the here and now. Musically I'd say that this is insightful and swinging proto hip hop with definite jazz influences. Conga and flute driven funk. Lyrically some of this stuff is funny yet caustic social comment and satire, and some is a bit more seriously political, sad and heartfelt. The song "Lady Day and John Coltrane" celebrates two powerfully emotive and creative musicians. Gil was influenced by The Last Poets with whom he played on his first album (I think), arguably the first rap group, and in turn influenced modern artists such as the Roots. Protest music rarely gets as soulful, funky and emotional as this. I still get as much of a kick from Whitey On The Moon now as I did when I first heard it back in the seventies. The ghetto is crumbling and people don't have enough to eat, and we'll spend millions to put a man on the moon. Talk about getting your priorities straight. Scott-Heron was putting a magnifying glass on black american society and experiences that were largely ignored by white majority America. This is one of Gil Scott-Heron's best works and not for those easily offended. Sometimes the truth hurts. He's out to wake people up, not put them to sleep. Track Listings 1. "Grant Green, Solid LP"SOLID - Grant Green recorded a mountain of LP'S for Blue Note in the 1960s; so many that quite a few were left in the can till after his premature death in 1979. As it turns out quite a lot of the unreleased LP'S count among his best work. In 1964 he twice recorded with a rhythm section of McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw & Elvin Jones & the June session, on which Joe Henderson and James Spaulding were added, yielded Solid. It's a good session, probably the most hard-hitting Green ever recorded, with a typically catholic choice of material by Duke Pearson, George Russell (the very long reading of "Ezz-Thetic"), Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson ("The Kicker", recorded before the famous Horace Silver version), Burt Bacharach ("Wives and Lovers", included as a bonus track but left off the original vinyl), & one Green composition. As with a lot of Green LP'S, the leader doesn't in fact occupy a more prominent position than any of the other players, especially as Green leaves comping duties to Tyner. -- It's rather intriguing, incidentally, how much Green followed not just Coltrane's influence but also Sonny Rollins. Countless Green LP'S include readings of Rollins tunes or Rollins-associated tunes. Rollins' 1954 blues "Solid" is sufficiently basic that one wonders why Green didn't just write his own line & get a little extra cash for a composer credit. Track Listings 1. Minor League 2.
