DATE WITH ELVIS - In 1959, at the time when RCA launched this record on the market, the label's shinning rock star was out of the country doing his military service in Germany. In order to comfort all his fans during his forced absence, the record bosses produced an album with a smartly uniformed Elvis on the cover, smiling widely to let his faithful followers know that he'd be back soon. There was a special calendar, too, so that his fans could count off the days until his return. This marketing ploy was extremely successful. The record became a highly desirable collector's item and even years later illegal dollars still flowed from pirate copies. The RCA producers kept mum about when and where the tracks were recorded. But who cares about that when listening to Elvis giving the "blue grass" classic "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" his unmistakable, rockabilly sound? The other titles, all of them performed by a well-proven ensemble of rock 'n' roll musicians, are filled with the honest, powerful language of the young - or from today's viewpoint, old - Elvis. Its three members had each woodshedded in some of Britain's most innovative bands, and by the time they joined forces in 1970, they were virtuosos on their respective instruments-Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on guitar, and Carl Palmer on drums. From the beginning, ELP's recording displayed these musical chops on epic-length composition inspired by such classical masters as Mussorgsky, Prokoflev, and Aaron Copland. The bands' spectacular concerts were the stuff of legend, employing lights, sets, and effects on a scale never before seen in rock. ELP racked up millions in sales through the 1970s, and their dozen-plus albums virtually defined progressive rock. Brain Salad Surgery is surely the trio's finest hour. TRILOGY Trilogy" was the third album from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the British Progressive (nee Classical) Rock group and it is certainly interesting in retrospect to consider those first three albums as a set. On their self-entitled debut album, ELP offered a balance between tracks featuring synthesizer overkill by keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson and the melodic compositions of guitarist Greg Lake, wherein Emerson turned in his organ for a piano. Their second album, "Tarkus," went in the first direction, with the Tarkus Suite representing their best effort along those lines. "Trilogy," represents the other direction of ELP, one which I personally favor. The two parts of "The Endless Enigma" are bridged by a "Fugue," that shows ELP's interest in pursuing classical musical forms, as does the final track, "Abaddon's Bolero." "The Sheriff" is one of those cute ditties the group tended to indulge in a bit too much, while "Hoedown" from Aaron Copeland's "Rodeo" is one of their better direct adaptations of a classical work. "Trilogy" and "From the Beginning" highlight the instrumentality of the group in a clearer, cleaner style. All in all, the high points on "Trilogy" are not as strong as on their debut album, but this certainly got ELP back on track for my money.
