Walk Upon the Water [*] SHAZAM - Personally, I think Shazam is in competition to be the best British rock album released in the sixties. I'm sure some of you will be offended by that statement, but listen to those six songs in one sitting and tell me you're not impressed. Great music, great vocals, great songs, and a primo psychedelic experience. We start off with a hard rocker, Hello Suzie, and fade into a classic Move ballad, Beautiful Daughter. As the haunting notes of Beautiful Daughter fade away, we hear the footsteps taking us to the neoclassical, brain-spinning Cherry Blossom Clinic. No time to rest after it's orgastic climax, it's onto the Eastern sounds of Fields of People. Then it's back to their early rock roots with the angst-driven Don't Make My Baby Blue. The sequence is topped off with the best version of Tom Paxton's The Last Thing on My Mind ever recorded. Once you've heard it, I defy your mind to think of anything else for the next week. If you're already a Move fan you know what I say is true. If you've stumbled here by accident, have I'll envy you when you hear this audio masterpiece for the first time. Track Listings - CONTAINS A LOT OF BONUS TRACKS NOT LISTED HERE 1. Hello Susie 2. Beautiful Daughter 3. Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited 4. Fields Of People 5. Don'T Take My Baby Blue 6. Last Thing On My Mind LOOKING ON - In the wake of The Move's SHAZAM album, singer Carl Wayne departed & leader Roy Wood recorded a solo album, BOULDERS (which saw release in 1973). When he returned, he invited friend Jeff Lynne (who'd replaced him in The Nightriders / The Idle Race) to join, and the 2 hatched the idea of creating a new band to replace The Move, which would include classical instruments and experimental ideas: The Electric Light Orchestra. LOOKING ON was the first result, though their record company (at least temporarily) nixed the idea of a name-change, purely for "commercial" reasons". This is one WILD album. As much of a major shift as SHAZAM was from earlier Move records, LOOKING ON is an even bigger departure. Both Wood & Lynne, whose earlier sound & styles were quite similar, come across doing & sounding almost completely unlike anything either of them had done before! Loud, heavy, ponderous, explosive, and downright bizarre are a few words that come to mind. This album is NOT an easy "first listen"! There's the ominous "Looking On", the growling-yet-bouncy "Turkish Tram Conductor Blues", the ethereal "What?" and the noisy "When Alice Comes Back To The Farm", with its almost honky-tonk piano. Things get extremely strange on Jeff Lynne's "Open Up Said The World To The Door"-- you have to HEAR this one, you still won't believe it! The one almost "normal" track is "Brontosaurus", a single recorded earlier, and I believe the only song here that includes departed bassist Rick Price. "Feel Too Good" makes for a relentless, hard-driving 9-minute finale. (But watch out for the "surprise" epilogue!) I've long considered this a "flawed experiment"; when they returned for their next outing, MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTRY, everything they were working toward seemed to fall in place! Track Listings - THIS IS THE LP TRACK LISTING BUT THE CD CONTAINS 10 ADDITIONAL BONUS TRACKS NOT LISTED 1. Looking On 2. Turkish Tram Conductor Blues 3. What? 4. When Alice Comes Back to the Farm 5. Open Up Said the World at the Door 6. Brontosaurus 7. Feel Too Good

The quintet certainly had their antecedents -- Hawkwind, Roxy Music, and Kraftwerk to name but a few, but still it was the group's 1977 eponymous debut's grandeur (courtesy of producer Eno), wrapped in the ravaged moods and lyrical themes of collapse and decay that transported '70s rock from the bloated pastures of the past to the futuristic dystopias predicted by punk. Epic tales of alienation, disillusion, and disintegration reflected the contemporary holocaust of Britain's collapse, while accurately prophesying the dance through society's cemetery and the graveyards of empires that were to be the Thatcher/Reagan years. "Saturday Night in the City of the Dead," "Wide Boys," "The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned," "Dangerous Rhythm," and "Slip Away" all simultaneously bemoaned and celebrated the destruction of Western culture while swaggering boldly through the wreckage; "I Want to Be a Machine" and "My Sex" warned of and yearned for technology's triumph. And it was these apposites and didactic emotions that so pierced the zeitgeist of the day, and kicked open a whole new world of synthesized music. Dangerous rhythms indeed. ~ Dave Thompson HA! HA! Young Savage (Live) (Bonus Track) - (live) Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo HA!-HA!-HA! is a bruising album, a tsunami of a set that epitomized the fire and fury of its age. Icy to its core, the disc was produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brilliantly captured both the band's urgency and the brittleness of their sound. Like the implosion of gases that ignited the Big Bang, HA!-HA!-HA! hangs in the millisecond before the ensuing explosion, trembling with ferocious tension and fierce anticipation of the coming storm. Much of the set seems frozen in this moment in time and space, lyrically reflected in "Hiroshima Mon Amour," "Man Who Dies Every Day," and "Frozen Ones." Unlike the celebration of destruction that defined their debut set, Ultravox now stood staring aghast into the abyss, with the manic exuberance of "Rockwrock" emerging not as the exhilarating dance through the death of civilization that many listeners assumed, but the band's panicked response to its collapse. And as fear took hold in the Western world, the band battered themselves against its crumbling walls, ravaged by the artificiality of the society rising amongst its ruins. Even decades on, the sheer ferocity of this set continues to impress. SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE - COLLECTORS NOTE: SOME T Track listing 1. Slow Motion 2. I Can't Stay Long 3. Someone Else's Clothes 4. Blue Light 5. Some of Them 6. Quiet Men 7. Dislocation 8. Maximum Acceleration 9. When You Walk Through Me 10. Just For a Moment 11. Cross Fade (Bonus Track) 12. Quiet Men (Bonus Track) Details Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo Album notes With 1978's SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE, Ultravox! left punk behind and single-handedly blue-printed the entire New Romantic movement to come (with a little help from co-producers Conny Planck and Dave Hutchins). Gone was the brittleness of HA!-HA!-HA!, replaced by a rich lushness of sound that would define the forthcoming genre. Shifting from the political to the inter-personal, gone too was the overwhelming sense of looming Armageddon, replaced by more generalized feelings of alienation, "Dislocation," and unease. "Quiet Men" is a Lowry painting brought to life, the chorus of "Slow Motion" a swaying field painted by Renoir, "I Can't Stay Long" a Degas ballet, while "Maximum Acceleration" is as lavish in sound as Botticelli was with paint. The rhythms still remained dangerous, however, and Robin Simon's guitar gives the set a tough edge, but it's the swirling, swooping synths and keyboards that predominate within.

"Judas Priest, Sin After Sin - OBI Mini Replica LP In A CD - Japanese pressing"

Artist: Judas Priest Release Date: Jun 06, 2005 Format: CD Record Label: Sony Music Distribution (USA) UPC: 4571191051653 Genre: Metal Duration: Album or EP Sub-Genre: -- Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Track listing 1. Vissident Aggressor Contributing artists: Simon Phillips Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Mixed Recording mode: Stereo Judas Priest: Robert Halford (vocals); Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing (guitar); Ian Hill (bass). Additional personnel: Simon Phillips (drums, percussion). Princiipally recorded at Ramport Studios, London, England in 1977. Includes liner notes by Judas Priest. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. 24 bit digitally remastered Japanese limited edition features two bonus tracks. CD contains 2 bonus tracks. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Heavy metal neophytes tend to assume that Black Sabbath was the only true heavy metal band of the '70s, but Judas Priest was rocking and riffing with the best of them throughout much of that decade too. In fact, it was such albums as 1977's SIN AFTER SIN that were to heavily influence future thrash metal bands. Arguably, this is Judas Priest's most consistent album. SIN AFTER SIN's metal version of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" has become a Priest classic; likewise the album opener, "Sinner," "Dissident Aggressor," later covered by Slayer, and the surprisingly romantic and low-key "Last Rose of Summer." One of the band's heaviest and most focused works, SIN AFTER SIN leaves most so-called hard rockers of the '70s sounding like the Osmonds.

Twenty-four bit digitally remastered Japanese reissue features a mini LP sleeve replica plus the bonus tracks "Prisoner of Your Eyes" and "Devil's Child (Live)". In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE. Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, etc.), Judas Priest took advantage of the then-developing video medium. MTV put the clip for "You Got Another Thing Coming" in heavy rotation, and the song became one of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems. Other album tracks, such as "The Hellion," "Electric Eye," "(Take These) Chains," "Devil's Child," and the title composition, were all prime metal cuts. With its perfect balance of heavy riffing and melodicism, SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE is considered by many to be among the finest heavy metal albums ever made. Editorial reviews 4 stars out of 5 - ...Represents their commercial peak...Priest finally broke America with this 1982 album... Q (07/01/2001) [I]t remains one of their most successful efforts... Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. 24 bit digitally remastered Japanese limited edition. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. The first real transatlantic breakthrough for Judas Priest came with this most unforgiving of live albums. Playing on their early success in the Far East, Judas Priest recorded a handful of shows in Tokyo on the back of their Hell Bent For Leather album. Their magnanimous success there made for a brutal and excited showing of live favourites that translated as a riotous success with the Japanese. Their inspired cover versions of Joan Baez's "Diamonds And Rust" and Fleetwood Mac's "Green Manalishi," as well as such gruelling standards as "Exciter" and "Ripper" made for a convincing sweatpit of a show. One to raise your hands to. Editorial reviews 3 stars out of 5 - ...The loudest of all...the obligatory Japanese live album... Q (12/01/2001)

Additional personnel includes: G.E. Smith (guitar); Tom T-Bone Wolk, Mickey Curry, Charlie DeChant. Producers include: Daryl Hall, John Oates. Recorded between 1975 & 1983. This compilation of soul rock duo Hall & Oates big hits includes "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone." The Japense import version comes in a paper sleeve case. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Personnel: Daryl Hall (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, vibraphone); John Oates (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); T-Bone Wolk (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Charles DeChant (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Jimmy Bralower (saxophone, synthesizer); Robbie Kilgore (keyboards); Clive Smith, Wells Christy (synthesizer); Mickey Curry (drums); Jay Burnett, Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Recording information: Electric Lady Studios, New York, NY. Unknown Contributor Roles: G.E. Smith; Charles DeChant; Mickey Curry; T-Bone Wolk. Released at the peak of Hall & Oates' popularity in the early '80s, 1983's Rock 'n Soul, Pt. 1: Greatest Hits effectively chronicles the time when the duo could do no wrong -- namely, the period between 1980's Voices and 1982's H2O, which includes only one other album, 1981's excellent Private Eyes. While this reaches back to their early-'70s work for Atlantic for "She's Gone," the only big hit they had at the label, and also has their two other big hits from that decade, "Sara Smile" and "Rich Girl," the bulk of Rock 'n Soul, Pt. 1 derives from those three albums: "Kiss on My List," "You Make My Dreams," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," "Maneater," and "One on One." That's a long list of singles, but it still misses some terrific singles from this era, including "How Does It Feel to Be Back," "Did It in a Minute," "Family Man," and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" (the latter two were included as bonus tracks on RCA/Legacy's 2006 reissue). As good as those songs may be, Rock 'n Soul, Pt. 1 doesn't necessarily miss them: with the exception of a live version of "Wait for Me" (good, but not essential), this is the cream of the crop of Hall & Oates' best period, and it makes for a tight, excellent listen, and it's bolstered by the sublime "Say It Isn't So" and the good rocker "Adult Education." Latter-day compilations like 2001's Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates and 2004's Ultimate (which was reissued a year later under the title Essential) may cover their entire career in more detail -- and the duo certainly made great music before and after this era -- but as a snapshot of Hall & Oates at their finest, Rock 'n Soul, Pt. 1: Greatest Hits can't be beat. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Editorial reviews [They were] reared on Motown, street-corner doo-wop, and the Sound of Philadelphia....Emotionally undeniable hits... Originally released on AFLI (2300). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Limited-edition Japanese release that is 24-bit digitally remastered and packaged in an LP-style slipcase. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. A big departure from their trademark blue-eyed Philly Soul sound, BEAUTY finds Hall and Oates edging closer and closer to guitar-driven rock. The one big exception here is the title track, a beautiful soul song in their best "She's Gone" style, with a gorgeous string section coda. "Winged Bull," on the other hand, is a droning, quasi Middle Eastern-sounding folk rocker obviously modeled on Led Zep's "Kashmir." Even further afield, "You Must Be Good For Something" is a dissonant bit of proto-New Wave pop, complete with tick-tock rhythm (a la the Cars), while "Bad Habits and Infections," is a prog-rock mini-suite in a style not too dissimilar from Yes.

Sanctuary Details Contributing artists: Bennie Maupin, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Larry Young, Wayne Shorter Producer: Teo Macero Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes Among the most controversial recordings in the history of jazz, BITCHES BREW was Miles Davis' shot across the bow of jazz insularity, a bold statement about jazz's ability to draw upon elements of popular culture, without mitigating its spirit of spontaneous invention. Much as Ornette Coleman's THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME set a new standard for harmonic and melodic freedom a decade before, BITCHES BREW signaled a sea change in jazz. Davis became a lightning rod for jazz's transformation, by mixing the best elements of '60s free jazz with dancing funk rhythms, electric rock textures, blues phrasing and his own breakthroughs in harmony and modality. Davis employed the Electric Flag's Harvey Brooks to double up with upright bassist Dave Holland on the Fender bass, and he is the modal heartbeat of every tune, freeing up the multiple drummers and keyboardists to weave a complex polytonal/polyrhythmic web of volatile chords and colliding rhythms. Joe Zawinul's "Pharaoh's Dance" and Davis' "Bitches Brew" treat their multiple themes in a ritualistic manner, as several strata of voices engage the lead melody in exciting exchanges. "Spanish Key" offers a thrilling sense of tension and release, as the trumpeter navigates a "Sex Machine"-styled vamp with a terse, brilliantly constructed solo, revelling in his new guitar-like phrasing. "John McLaughlin" is Davis' tribute to the innovative guitarist; "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down" is a spooky, visceral melange of funk, blues and third world sources; and Shorter's "Sanctuary" is a moody ballad that builds to a fever pitch. The savage emotional power of BITCHES BREW and Davis' subsequent recordings cries out for a fresh critical reassessment. Editorial reviews Included in Q's Best Jazz Albums of All Time. "Miles Davis, Someday My Prince Will Come - OBI Mini LP Replica In A CD - Japanese

Artist: Miles Davis Release Date: Oct 06, 2006 Format: CD Record Label: Sony BMG UPC: 4547366026597 Genre: Jazz Duration: Album or EP Sub-Genre: Trumpet Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Detailed item info Track listing 1. Someday My Prince Will Come 2. Old Folks 3. Pfrancing 4. Drad-Dog 5. Teo 6. I Thought About You Details Contributing artists: Hank Mobley, Jimmy Cobb, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Wynton Kelly Producer: Teo Macero Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Mixed Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Hank Mobley, John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on March 7, 20 & 21, 1961. Originally released on Columbia (8456). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Eddie Henderson. Digitally remastered by Teo Macero (CBS Records Studio, New York). This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. Recorded shortly after the blistering IN PERSON, FRIDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK, SAN FRANCISCO, VOLUMES 1 & 2 (but released first), SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME captures Miles Davis and his second great rhythm section at the peak of their collective interplay. By March 1961, the rhythm team of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb had attained a finger snapping level of relaxation and swing that was equal parts grits and grace (check out their soulful blues vamp on "Pfrancing"). They had become so attuned to each other during their tenure with Miles that they left in tandem to form the Wynton Kelly Trio--forcing Miles to search for new conscripts, precipitating his boldest period of exploration. Miles' had a penchant for turning offbeat standards and show tunes into personal jazz classics, and certainly few songs have come to be as closely identified with an artist as "Someday My Prince Will Come." From the rhythm section's evocation of a clock striking midnight and Kelly's big band-styled comping, through Miles' famous muted rendition of the theme and the contrasting tenor styles of laid-back Hank Mobley and a testifying John Coltrane, this is a defining moment in the history of jazz and the pop song form. The title tune tends to overshadow the understated power of Miles' muted horn on such exceptional ballad performances as "Old Folks," "I Thought About You" and the trumpeter's own "Drad-Dog." But it's "Teo," an extra funky, Spanish flavored vamp (shades of "It Ain't Necessarily So") that elicits the most heat from each improviser, particularly Mr. Coltrane, only months away from his own epic Iberian "Ole."

Liner Note Authors: Robert Palmer; Nat Hentoff. Editorial reviews Included in Q's list of The Best Jazz Albums of All Time. Q (04/01/1999) 5 Stars - Indispensable - Widely considered the greatest album in jazz history, Miles Davis' 1959 masterpiece is a collection of exquisitely melodic and deceptively simple modern jazz... Q (03/01/1995) Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century Vibe (12/01/1999) ...The absolutely beautiful Coltrane solo on the `Flamenco Sketches' alternate is alone worth the price....The restoration of the sound to the correct pitch makes enough of a difference to recommend repurchasing this classic even without the jazz track of the year aboard... JazzTimes (08/01/1997) This is a remarkable album. Using very simple but effective devices, Miles has constructed an album of extreme beauty and sensitivity. This is not to say that this LP is a simple one--far from it. What is remarkable is that the men have done so much with the stark, skeltal material. Down Beat (01/01/1959) Ranked #13 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time - This painterly masterpiece is one of the most important, influential and popular albums in jazz... Rolling Stone (12/11/2003) [T]he music draws you in with seductively gentle restraint. It's a recording with a pristine elegance. Paste 4.5 stars out of 5 -- Its ageless cool now seems intertwined with its backstory: Just months after making the album, Davis and most of his sidemen would spin off in different directions, founding entire schools of jazz. I Don't Wanna Be Kissed (By Anyone But You) Contributing artists: Art Taylor, Gil Evans, Jimmie Cleveland, Jimmy Cleveland, Lee Konitz, Paul Chambers, Taft Jordan, Willie Ruff, Wynton Kelly Producer: George Avakian Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Mixed Personnel: Miles Davis (flugelhorn); Gil Evans (arranger, conductor); Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Taft Jordan, Ernie Royal, Bernie Glow, John Carisi, Louis Mucci (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Frank Rehak, Joe Bennett (trombone); Tom Mitchell (bass trombone); Willie Ruff, Tony Miranda, Jimmy Buffington (French horn); Bill Barber (tuba); Romeo Penque (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe); Sid Cooper, Eddie Caine (flute, clarinet); Danny Bank (bass clarinet); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at the Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York between May 6 and August 22, 1957. This is a specially imported limited edition 20-bit digital remaster from Japan. Miles Davis was part of a circle of musicians drawn to arranger Gil Evans' charts for Claude Thornhill's Orchestra--his lovely palette of woodwinds and deep brass, his way of voicing chords and accenting rhythms. Beginning with their innovative collaboration on BIRTH OF THE COOL, they created a luminous body of work, as Gil Evans played Billy Strayhorn to Miles' Duke Ellington. Beginning with MILES AHEAD, and continuing through works such as PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN, AT CARNEGIE HALL and QUIET NIGHTS they cultivated a cool attitude that defined jazz in popular consciousness. This is the second CD release of MILES AHEAD (look for the Legacy logo), and this edition returns to the original mono master takes, proceeding as one uninterrupted work--a concerto for flugelhorn soloist and mixed brass, woodwinds and rhythm. The jaunty brass counterpoint and contrary motion of "Springsville" launches Miles in full flight, descending into the gossamer Iberian shadings of "The Maids Of Cadiz." Shadowed by flutes, French horns and a dancing tuba, Miles celebrates Brubeck's lovely anthem "The Duke" with spacious lyric grace. The gorgeous soft chords of "My Ship" and the burnished deep brass of the title tune suggest how completely Evans transformed big band voicings (much as Ellington did), while the introspective manner in which Miles phrases suggests Billie Holiday. Evans' meandering "Blues For Pablo," which alternates between blues and flamenco-styled themes and the swinging stop time of Ahmad Jamal's "New Rhumba" form the emotional centerpiece of this otherwordly recital, concluding with a bracing brass cry so typical of earlier dance bands. Editorial reviews 4 1/2 Stars - Very Good Plus - ...a remarkably flexible set of scores, written with a suppleness, fluidity, and skill that should immediately bring Gil Evans to the front rank of contemporary jazz writers and long due...The handling of the brass, with its muttering, spouting, rolling figures is a thing of liveliness that grows with each hearing.... "Miles Davis, E.S.P. - OBI Mini LP Replica In A CD - Japanese"

Artist: Miles Davis Release Date: Oct 27, 2006 Format: CD Record Label: Sony Music Distribution (USA) UPC: 4547366026689 Genre: Jazz Duration: Album or EP Sub-Genre: Trumpet Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Track listing 1. E.S.P. 2. Eighty-One 3. Little One 4. R.J. 5. Agitation 6. Iris 7. Mood Playing time: 48 min. Contributing artists: Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Tony Williams (drums). Producer: Irving Townshend. Reissue producer: Mike Berniker. Recorded at Columbia Studios, Los Angeles, California from January 20-22, 1965. Originally released on Columbia (9150). Includes liner notes by Bob Belden. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technologyby Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). As Miles Davis' music evolved in the early '60s, he worked through aspects of his old repertoire, show tunes and the music of Gil Evans with a series of transitional bands, whose members dated from the late '50s on up. As he gradually assembled his dream band, the music began to take on a more modernist perspective, but it wasn't until he added saxophonist Wayne Shorter that this quintet finally gelled. E.S.P. marks the beginning of the quintet's collective evolution toward a new brand of modernism: freely inflected, with plenty of room for collective interplay, but still deeply rooted in chordal harmony and swing. After working with Hank Mobley, George Coleman and Sam Rivers, Miles finally got his man when Wayne Shorter left the Jazz Messengers to begin a five year stint with the trumpeter in 1964. The moody impressionistic chords Shorter penned to open "Iris" signal a new texture and harmonic palette for Miles' band, and his serpentine melodic invention, as epitomized by the title cut, acted as a creative catalyst for the entire band. Shorter went on to become the band's de facto musical director, but on E.S.P. Davis, Hancock and Carter all make significant contributions. "Eighty-One" presages Miles' growing interest in funky, blues-based materials, while "Agitation" features an evocative intro by 19-year old Tony Williams, already moving beyond simple choruses into layers of meter and texture, and followed by Davis, Shorter and Hancock's own jittery coiled solos. Editorial reviews 4 Stars - Very Good - ...E.S.P. marks the emergence of this band's unabashed impressionism with originals, the lovely, melancholic Little One, Iris, and Mood taking the balladic treatment to new heights... "Miles Davis, In Europe - OBI Miini LP Replica In A CD - Japanese"

Miles Davis Release Date: Oct 06, 2006 Format: CD Record Label: Sony BMG UPC: 4547366026634 Genre: Jazz Duration: Album or EP Sub-Genre: Trumpet Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Track listing 1. Introduction - (studio) 2. Autumn Leaves - (studio) 3. Milestones - (studio) 4. Joshua - (studio) 5. All of You - (studio) 6. Walkin - (studio) Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Live Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a The legendary jazz trumpeter's 1964 release was recorded at the Festival Mondial in France, and features some of the greatest names in the genre: tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. Japanese DSD remastered reissue is packaged in a mini-LP sleeve. MILES DAVIS IN EUROPE, recorded live in France during 1963, is one of the first indications of the direction trumpeter Miles Davis would take through the rest of the '60s and early '70s. Compared to MY FUNNY VALENTINE, on which the group's free bebop aesthetic was more thoroughly defined, IN EUROPE finds the quintet bridging the modal bop of Davis's late-'50s sound with an edgier, more expressionistic style. The lynchpin of these changes was the band's new rhythm section, comprised of bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock, and 17-year-old drummer Tony Williams. Hancock builds on the lyricism of Bill Evans (another Davis alum), yet introduces an extremely spare chordal technique that gives the music a free-floating, spacious feel. The blistering cross-rhythms of Carter and Williams propel breakneck takes on "Milestones" and "Joshua," and add intriguing complexity to the ballads "All of You" and "I Thought About You." Saxophonist George Coleman is a formidable player with a light, fleet-fingered, and harmonically inventive approach. Davis balances his famed soft, poetic sound with a bolder attack, exploring an energized, vigorous style that would continue to grow through the decade.

"Miles Davis, Nefertiti - OBI Mini LP Replica in A CD - Japanese"

Artist: Miles Davis Release Date: Oct 27, 2006 Format: CD Record Label: Sony BMG UPC: 4547366026702 Genre: Jazz Duration: Album or EP Sub-Genre: Trumpet Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Track listing 1. Nefertiti 2. Fall 3. Hand Jive 4. Madness 5. Riot 6. Pinocchio Contributing artists: Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Tony Williams (drums). Producers: Teo Macero, Howard Roberts. Reissue producers: Michael Cuscuna, Bob Belden. Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on between June 7 and July 19, 1967. Originally released on Columbia (9594). Includes liner notes by Bob Belden. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). NEFERTITI represents the final "straight-ahead" offering by Miles Davis' legendary '60s quintet, the culmination of a creative arc which began with E.S.P.. On four subsequent albums--MILES IN THE SKY, FILLES DE KILIMANJARO, IN A SILENT WAY and BITCHES BREW--Davis forged a fresh creative arc in which he allowed elements of electronics, blues, funk and rock to intermingle with his own post-modernist sensibility to launch the jazz-rock fusion era. NEFERTITI was the fruition of all Davis' experiments in free form, bebop, cool and modal jazz. Davis's signature as an improviser and musical editor is writ large on each composition, particularly in the provocative use of space. On Shorter's famous title tune, the trumpet and tenor saxophone shadow each other's line in a deliberately inexact manner, almost like a form of silkscreening, as Hancock's piano tolls away suggestively and Tony Williams drops percussive grenades all over the canvas--as if the drums were the lead voice (and don't think they aren't). Shorter's floating melody on "Fall" and his boppish figures on "Pinocchio" have also become essential elements of the modern jazz lexicon, and listen to how bassist Carter and Williams suspend, subdivide and generally subert the traditional 4/4 swing pulse on the later. Williams' "Hand Jive" and Hancock's "Madness" offer cubist shards of melody as the take off point for more resounding swing interplay with Carter and Williams, while the pithy "Riot" redefines Afro-Cuban in a decidedly modern manner. NEFERTITI is a mysterious, meliflouous, enduring classic. Editorial reviews 5 Stars - Excellent - ...Acoustic jazz couldn't go far after this masterpiece... Q (01/01/1992) 4.5 stars out of 5 -- Offset by Hancock's staggered lines, drummer Tony Williams' cymbal taps during `Fall' reel you into the song in a mesmerizing manner... Down Beat

"Miles Davis, Milestones - OBI Mini LP Replica In A CD"

Artist: Miles Davis Release Date: Oct 06, 2006 Format: CD Record Label: Sony Music Distribution (USA) UPC: 4547366026559 Genre: Jazz Duration: Album or EP Special Attributes: Import, Remastered, Special Edition Track listing 1. Dr. Jekyll 2. Sid's Ahead 3. Two Bass Hit 4. Miles 5. Billy Boy 6. Straight, No Chaser Contributing artists: Bud Powell, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, J.J. Johnson, John Coltrane, John Lewis, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Lucky Thompson, Max Roach, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Red Garland Producer: Teo Macero Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Mixed This CD is a compilation of early Miles Davis tracks and is NOT the Columbia album called MILESTONES released in 1958. Personnel includes: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Bud Powell, John Lewis (piano); Max Roach (drums). Recorded between 1945 and 1947. The title does not refer to the trumpeter's composition from his first recording date but is an acknowledgement of this session's visceral impact. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane had left the trumpeter in the spring of 1957 to join Thelonious Monk for his engagement at New York's Five Spot, and was replaced by a rising star on alto saxophone, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. When he returned, Davis had a formidable three-horn front line to go with "The Rhythm Section." MILESTONES is a bracing rhythmic tonic, coming after the refined ballad moods and lush orchestral pastels of MILES AHEAD. And from the furious, adults-only hyper-drive of the opening "Dr. Jekyll" (with its thrilling tenor/alto battle and daredevil drum breaks), through a dazzling Dizzy Gillespie/John Lewis bebop anthem ("Two Bass Hit") to the bright dancing groove of "Straight, No Chaser," MILESTONES is an epic historical event--even by Miles' standards. The slow, bluesy "Sid's Ahead" first appeared as "Weirdo" on Miles' March 1954 Blue Note session, and offers tantalizing portraits of the horns. Coltrane attacks his line like a blues guitarist, in short bursts of vocal cries and loping syncopated tangents; Miles comes out jabbing, slow and purposeful, feinting and fading behind the beat with lovely long tones and bends; Cannonball comes out all agitated and excitable, with little quicksilver runs and sing-songy asides (such as "Skip to my lou my darling"). Pianist Red Garland's famous feature on the traditional "Billy Boy" highlights his mastery of a two handed orchestral style, his brilliant use of space in blues phrasing, and his interplay with the driving young Paul Chambers (with his enormous beat and impeccable bow work) and the fiery Philly Joe Jones (whose complex melodic variations transcend the technical limitations of the drums).

Comes with sleeves similar to Vinyl LPs, Cardboard packaging like an ORIGINAL LP. Actual miniaturized version of the 12" LP in 4" CD version. ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! Japanese Limited Edition Issue of the Album Classic in a Deluxe, Miniaturized LP Sleeve Replica of the Original Vinyl Album Artwork After the massive success of 1981's "4" and it's subsequent tour, Foreigner took a couple of years off before returning in 1984 with "Agent Provocateur." Although it didn't do the business that "4" did (and how could it have?), "Agent Provocateur" was still a big hit album for the band, and it finally gave them their long sought-after #1 single in the form of "I Want To Know What Love Is." With the exception of that beautiful ballad plus a few others, "Provocateur" has an even more rocking feel to it than it's legendary predecessor, with Mick Jones' scorching guitar and Lou Gramm's full-throttle lead vocals at the forefront. Ah, but Foreigner wouldn't be Foreigner without their trademark keyboards or the band's fine sense of melody, which "Provocateur" has both of in great abundance, too. Once again, Foreigner rock the house in great style on songs like "Tooth And Nail," "Growing Up The Hard Way," "Reaction To Action," "Stranger In My Own House," and "She's Too Tough." And the softer, keyboard-led stuff is wonderful too---"I Want To Know What Love Is" is an instant Foreigner classic, and "That Was Yesterday" (a Top 20 hit), "A Love In Vain," "Down On Love," and "Two Different Worlds" are also great songs. Powerful rockers and ballads throughout, excellent production work, and electrifying performances from the band, not only Jones & Gramm but also bassist Rick Wills and drummer Dennis Elliott. From end to end, "Agent Provocateur" is a solid Foreigner album 1. Tooth and Nail 2. That Was Yesterday 3. I Want to Know What Love Is 4. Growing Up the Hard Way 5. Reaction to Action 6. Stranger in My Own House 7. A Love in Vain 8. Down on Love 9. Two Different Worlds 10. She's Too Tough

Essentially the work of ex-Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones and singer Lou Gramm, Foreigner understood what it took to deliver loud, guitar-driven rock to FM radio. Their hooks were evident from the get-go with "Cold As Ice" and "Feels Like the First Time" and only grew stronger over time with "Jukebox Hero" and "Hot Blooded." By the time of "Waiting for a Girl Like You," Foreigner were beginning to lean harder on adult-contemporary pop, which sent them in another direction. 1. Cold as Ice 2. Double Vision 3. Head Games 4. If Toto's musical advantage was that, since its members continued to play on many of the successful records made in L.A., its own music was popular almost by definition, its disadvantage was that it made little attempt to seek an individual musical signature -- a particular style, say, or a distinctive singer (Bobby Kimball was not it) who could make its records immediately identifiable. "Hold the Line" had been a big hit, but who did it? Boston? Foreigner? As a result, Toto was less well positioned than most to come off a big debut album with the follow-up, and Hydra was unusually dependent on its leadoff single, "99." Maybe it was a tribute to the female lead on the old Get Smart TV show, but many listeners didn't get a song with a chorus that went, "Oh, 99, I love you," and the single stalled in the bottom half of the Top 40. The album went gold on momentum, but the songs, however well-played, simply were not distinctive enough to consolidate the success Toto had achieved with its debut album. ~ William Ruhlmann

WHAT WERE ONCE VICES ARE NOW HABITS, the follow-up to the Doobies' massive commercial breakthrough, THE CAPTAIN AND ME, boasts one of the great album titles in rock history. The album also features a strong bunch of songs in the same stylistic vein as its immediate predecessors. The big hit here, of course, is "Black Water," an infectious piece of jazzy folk rock with a killer a cappella gospel-chorus section. "Song to See You Through" is the Doobies' version of a '60s soul ballad, with the Memphis Horns adding a deep, Southern-fried feel. "Eyes of Silver" lopes along on a guitar-driven "Listen to the Music" groove, while "Down in the Track" is a straight-ahead, mid-tempo blues rocker with a cameo appearance by New Orleans piano legend James Booker. Best of all is the lovely "Another Park, Another Sunday," whose folk-style guitars and harmonies give country-rock contemporaries like the Eagles a good run for their money. Though not as consistent and essential as THE CAPTAIN AND ME, WHAT WERE ONCE VICES still has plenty to offer, capturing the band at the crest of their early-'70s peak.

"Bad Company, Rough Diamonds - OBI Mini LP Replica In A CD - Japanese"

Artist: Bad Company Release Date: Mar 12, 2007 Format: CD Record Label: Warner Elektra Atlantic Corp. Nuthin' on the TV 4. Painted Face 5. Ballad of the Band 6. Cross Country Boy 7. Old Mexico 8. Downhill Ryder 9. Recetrack Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Recorded at Ridge Farm Studios, Dorking, Surrey, England in April 1981. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen. After five albums in as many years, massive worldwide success, and frequent global touring, Bad Company wrapped up the '70s nearly exhausted. Singer Paul Rodgers insisted that the band take some time off to re-energize before hitting the studio again, a decision that proved professionally disastrous for the band. Three years slipped by, virtually an eternity, before Bad Company released ROUGH DIAMONDS in 1981. Perhaps it was the new decade, the onset of new wave icons propelled by the unstoppable rise of the then burgeoning MTV, or simply the fact that the album wasn't up to the band's previous standards. Whatever the reasons, Bad Company was viewed as an anachronism and the album quietly dropped out of sight. Rodgers soon left the band, thus ending Bad Company's original line up. It's a bit of a shame, as there are rewarding moments on ROUGH DIAMONDS, notably the slinky "Untie the Knot," which perhaps prophetically details Rodgers' dissatisfaction with a relationship from which he wishes to escape. The funky "Downhill Ryder" is a telling reminder that even when not firing on all cylinders, Bad Company is a force to be reckoned with.

Master of Ceremony Playing time: 45 min. Producer: Bad Company Distributor: MSI Music Distribution Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Recorded at Le Chateau Studios, Herouville, France in July & August, 1976. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Bad Company had seriously began to wane from critical favor with the release of BURNIN' SKY. Congratulated for the no-frills approach on their debut, Bad Company was subsequently taken to task for sticking with the dynamic that made them a great band in the first place! While nearly every other supergroup in rock history (excepting the Traveling Wilburys) succumbed quickly to the inviting airs of self-importance, Bad Company consistently fueled itself on boiling its blues-based rock down to its barest elements. The title track alone is a potent reminder of the band's stripped down power and Rodgers' considerable vocal prowess. Even at his most passionate, Rodgers never gives in to histrionics or superfluous emoting. With a simple kick drum and snare pushing him, Rodgers rides over the insinuating two-chord riff in full rock & roll glory.
