"Jethro Tull, Thick As A Brick - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

Thick As A Brick [Gold Disc CD] Track listing 1. Thick As A Brick (Part 1) 2. Thick As A Brick (Part 2) Details Playing time: 43 min. Producer: Ian Anderson, Terry Ellis Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: AAD Album notes While never as high-minded or technically facile as the likes of Yes or ELP, Tull began incorporating complex time changes, sophisticated harmonic structures, and highly developed lyrical themes on THICK AS A BRICK, the realization of the artistic growth begun on AQUALUNG. It is here that Tull finally bursts into full-blown prog-rock mode. While AQUALUNG was a group of discrete compositions united by a theme, THICK AS A BRICK consists of one extended piece that occupies the length of the album. Lyrically, Anderson's intentions are a bit obscure here, but the sophisticated arrangements and virtuoso performances are enough to carry the show. John Evan's piano and organ are at the heart of this complex piece, which moves through an endless succession of tempos, moods, and modes in a manner similar to vintage Genesis or the aforementioned Yes, but with a grittier edge. Most importantly, the whole things flows in a cohesive fashion. THICK AS A BRICK demands close attention, but rewards the same handsomely. Editorial reviews ...their music spins a delicate web of sensitive sounds: sometimes lilting, sometimes soaring to form a brilliant backdrop for the meaningful lyrics and improvisational techniques... "Jimmy Buffet, Son of a Sailor - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

Track listing 1. Son Of A Son Of A Sailor 2. Fool Button 3. Last Line, The 4. Livingston Saturday Night 5. Cheeseburger In Paradise 6. Coast Of Marseilles 7. Cowboy In The Jungle 8. Manana 9. African Friend Details Contributing artists: Janie Fricke, Larry Lee, Steve Goodman Producer: Norbert Putnam Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes Personnel: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Tim Krekel (guitar); Billy Puett (bass flute, recorder); Fingers Taylor (harmonica, organ); Jay Spell (piano); Mike Utley (organ); Harry Dailey (bass); Kenneth Buttery (drums, percussion); Ferrell Morris (percussion, marimba); Norbert Putnam (kalimba); Steve Goodman, Deborah McColl, Penny Nichols, Lea Jane Berinati, Janie Fricke, Ginger Holladay (background vocals). The Muscle Shoals Horns: Harvey Thompson (tenor saxophone); Harrison Calloway, Dennis Good. Originally released on MCA (31091). All tracks have been digitally remastered. The follow-up album to Jimmy Buffett's commercial breakthrough CHANGES IN LATITUDES, CHANGES IN ATTITUDES isn't quite as brash or atmospheric, but it's close enough that nobody seems to mind. The showstopper here, is, of course, the amusing ode to conspicuous consumption that is "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (it's a food that Buffett assures us in the chorus is "worth every damn bit of sacrifice!"). But the torchy Nelson Riddle-ish version of Keith Sykes' broken-heart ballad "Coast of Marseillles" is almost as memorable. "Manana" has one of his best-ever singalong choruses ever, as well as a hilarious reference to comic Steve Martin that you really don't see coming.

"Jimmy Buffett, A White Sport Coat & a Pink Crustacean - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

MFSL 24K GOLD CD - FACTORY SEALED Track listings 1. Great Filling Station Holdup, The 2. Railroad Lady 3. He Went To Paris 4. Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit 5. Cuban Crime Of Passion 6. Why Don't We Get Drunk 7. Peanut Butter Conspiracy 8. They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More 9. I Have Found Me A Home 10. My Lovely Lady 11. Death Of An Unpopular Poet Details Contributing artists: Steve Goodman, Vassar Clements Producer: Don Gant Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: AAD Album notes Full title: A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean. Personnel: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Goodman (acoustic guitar); Reggie Young (electric guitar); Doyle Gresham (pedal steel guitar); Vassar Clements (fiddle); Greg "Fingers" Taylor (harmonica); Mike Utley (piano); Shane Keester (Moog synthesizer); Ed "Lump" Williams (bass); Sammy Creason (drums); Marvin Gardens (maracas); Ferrell Morris (percussion); Don Gant, Buzz Cason, Carol Montgomery, Diane Harris (background vocals). Recorded at Glaser Sound, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Tom McGuane. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. Jimmy Buffett's major label debut (the title takes off from a sappy piece of late '50s teen pop by country singer Marty Robbins) is a bit more folky and laid back than you might expect. There are hints of the rowdier Buffett persona to come, but by and large this is early '70s mellow singer-songwriter stuff, albeit with cleverer than usual lyrics. Highlights include "Death of an Unpopular Poet," a delicately arranged story song about a poet whose posthumous success leads, literally, to the dogs; "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More," a nostalgic remembrance of '40s big-fruit wearer Carmen Miranda; and "My Lovely Lady," an enthusiastic paean to a woman who "can eat her own weight in crabmeat." There's also the immortal "Why Don't We Get Drunk," a song whose next line--"and screw"--raised eyebrows in 1973, although post-Eminem it's less likely to do so.

"Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD - CURRENTLY SOLD OUT"

Diamonds & Rust - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD Track listing 1. Diamonds & Rust 2. Fountain of Sorrow 3. Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer 4. Children and All That Jazz 5. Simple Twist of Fate 6. Blue Sky 7. Hello in There 8. Jesse 9. Winds of the Old Days 10. Dida 11. I Dream Of Jeannie / Danny Boy Details Contributing artists: Hampton Hawes, Joe Sample, Joni Mitchell, Larry Carlton, Larry Knechtel, Tom Scott, Wilton Felder Producer: David Kershenbaum, Joan Baez Personnel includes: Joan Baez (vocals, acoustic guitar, Moog synthesizer, ARP synthesizer); Joni Mitchell (vocals); Larry Carlton (conductor, acoustic & electric guitars); Dean Parks (acoustic & electric guitars); Red Rhodes (pedal steel guitar); Sidney Sharp, William Kurasch, James Getzoff, Carl La Magna, Robert Konrad, Ronald Folsom, Tibor Zelig, William Hymanson, Robert Ostrowsky, Raymond Kelly (violin); Isabelle Daskoff (viola); Jesse Ehrlich (cello); Tom Scott (flute); Hampton Hawes (piano); Larry Knechtel (piano, electric piano); David Paich (piano, electric harpsichord); Joe Sample (electric piano, Hammond organ); Malcolm Cecil (Moog synthesizer, ARP synthesizer, programming); Reinne Press, Wilton Felder (bass); Jim Gordon (drums); Gordo (percussion); Bob Margouleff (programming). Engineers: Rick Ruggieri, Henry Lewy. Principally recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California on January 21-24, 1975. Includes original release liner notes by Bernard Gelb. Joan Baez scored the biggest commercial success of her career with this 1975 album by tapping into the '70s singer-songwriter zeitgeist in the manner of Joni Mitchell's post-BLUE albums. Baez even recruited Mitchell and her then-current band, the L.A. Express, for the fusion-like groove of "Di Da," and salted the other tracks with guest shots by pop-jazzers Tom Scott, Hampton Hawes, and Larry Carlton. Baez also includes covers of Jackson Browne's "Fountain of Sorrow," John Prine's "Hello in There," and Stevie Wonder's "Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer." DIAMONDS AND RUST is perhaps best viewed as Baez's response to Dylan's confessional BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, including two songs directly addressing their '60s romance (the title track and "Winds of the Old Days"). As in the past, Baez also performs a song from Dylan's most recent album, in this case, "Simple Twist of Fate" from the aforementioned record. DIAMONDS AND RUST is an oddity in Joan Baez's career, but it's one of her strongest albums.

Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas between March 1981 and May 1982. Includes liner notes by J.P. Bean. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); Barry Reynolds (vocals, guitar); Robbie Shakespeare (vocals, bass); Jimmy Cliff, Robert Palmer (vocals); Mikey Chung, Adrian Belew (guitar); Wally Badarou (keyboards); Sly Dunbar (drums); Sticky Thompson (percussion). Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. This is a deliberately low-key album by Joe Cocker's standards, but in its slow, simmering way it's nonetheless one of his best. Thanks to a small band anchored by Jamaica's greatest rhythm section--Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass--the basic sound here is spooky and minimalist, with skittering synth and guitar parts that are unerringly simple, but not simplistic. Cocker himself is in excellent voice. The choice of songs splits the difference between the familiar--Jimmy Cliff's magnificent, often covered "Many Rivers to Cross," and "Seven Days," one of Bob Dylan's best rockers--and the unjustly obscure, such as Bill Withers' way sexy "Ruby Lee," and Jimmy Webb's lovely "Just Like Always." Great stuff.

MFSL 24K GOLD CD "Last Copy" Surfing With The Alien [Gold Disc CD] Track listing 1. Surfing With The Alien 2. Ice 9 3. Crushing Day 4. Always With Me, Always With You 5. Satch Boogie 6. Hill Of The Skull 7. Circles 8. Lords Of Karma 9. Midnight 10. Echo Details Producer: Joe Satriani, John Cuniberti Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: DDD Album notes Personnel: Joe Satriani (guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion, drum programming); Jeff Campbell (drums, percussion); Bongo Bob Smith (percussion, drum programming); John Cuniberti (percussion). Recorded at Alpha And Omega Recording and Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Matt Resnicoff. The LED ZEPPELIN IV of instrumental rock albums, 1987's SURFING WITH THE ALIEN cemented Joe Satriani's status as a top-tier virtuoso axe man. Although Satriani (a teacher to such famous students as Steve Vai and Metallica's Kirk Hammett) began getting recognition following his solo debut, NOT OF THIS EARTH, it was this subsequent record that truly sent the guitarist's career into the stratosphere. With the majority of the album performed by Satch himself (including bass, keyboard, and most drum parts), this is an outing that prominently displays his overall musical talent, while keeping the focus on his amazingly deft, blistering leads. The New York-born guitarist also impresses with his eclectic array of styles, ranging from the fierce hard rock of the title track to the delicate pop of "Always with Me, Always with You" to the bold blues of "Satch Boogie." For those curious about the revered shredder, this is a great introduction, and, for aspiring heavy-metal/hard-rock guitarists, SURFING WITH THE ALIEN is absolutely essential. "John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman, ST - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman [Gold Disc CD] Track listing 1. They Say It's Wonderful 2. Dedicated To You 3. My One And Only Love 4. Lush Life 5. You Are Too Beautiful 6. Autumn Serenade Details Contributing artists: Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner Producer: Bob Thiele Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Johnny Hartman (vocals); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 7, 1963. Includes liner notes by A. B. Spellman and Michael Cuscuna. From his formative days with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, through the expansive revelations of his Prestige, Atlantic and Impulse! recordings, John Coltrane revealed many facets of beauty--some full of turbulence, others bathed in serenity. JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN is probably the saxophonist's most graceful, accessible recording in a discography awash in spiritual radiance. When this album was recorded in March of 1963, Coltrane was completing a series of recordings designed to highlight his lyric strengths and the subtle accompaniment skills of his quartet. When the concept of singer was raised, Coltrane reached out to Hartman because the saxophonist considered the crooner's soothing, elegant baritone to be a musical parallel to his own singing sound. The spiritual aura and artistic empathy they achieve on JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN is simply transcendent. Their version of "My One And Only Love" is among the most mesmerizing performances in the history of jazz, as Coltrane's majestic tenor and Garrison's syncopated bass anticipate Hartman's entrance, with his luminous timbre, poetic articulation and hear-a-pin-drop phrasing. Hartman and Tyner turn the opening verse of Strayhorn's "Lush Life" into a theatrical event, setting a bittersweet tone for the ambivalence of the main theme, while their interplay on "You Are Too Beautiful" is tenderness personified. And when the saxophonist finally sidesteps the melody to vigorously expand upon the harmonic and rhythmic implications of the changes to "Autumn Serenade," one realizes that for John Coltrane, beauty was the sum total of his very existance.

"John Coltrane, Ballads - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

Ballads - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD Track listing 1. Say It (Over And Over Again) 2. You Don't Know What Love Is 3. Too Young To Go Steady 4. All Or Nothing At All 5. I Wish I Knew 6. What's New 7. It's Easy To Remember 8. Nancy (With The Laughing Face) Producer: Bob Thiele Distributor: Koch (Distributor USA) Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo John Coltrane Quartet: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison, Reggie Workman (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey between December 21, 1961 and November 13, 1962. During the early '60s, the contentious critical reaction to John Coltrane's music got so over-the-top that some reactionaries branded his work with Eric Dolphy as "anti-jazz." Having already recorded the exploratory AFRICA/BRASS and LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, Coltrane went along with producer Bob Thiele's suggestion that he do an album of BALLADS to silence nay-sayers once and for all. BALLADS, DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE and JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN for a triptych of "traditional" recordings, italicizing the saxophonist's ability to swing in a classic vein, while underscoring his sensitivity as a ballad player. He even managed to impress the moldy fig who penned the original liner notes to BALLADS. From the gentle opening strains of "Say It (Over And Over Again)," the saxophonist imparts all the tender yearning and romantic empathy of a mature, compassionate adult. Given his predilection for technical complexities, Coltrane avoids any hint of emotional grandstanding, allowing only for subtle melodic embellishments. On "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "What's New" he displays a glorious tone, achieving a remarkably human vocal timbre in the upper registers, indulging in more pronounced harmonic variations, as the Tyner-Garrison-Jones rhythm axis subtly shifts gears to accomodate these intricacies. Without straying far from the basic themes or giving in to cheap sentiment, the saxophonist sustains a gorgeous melodic focus throughout BALLADS, marking this recital as another John Coltrane masterpiece. Reviews 4 Stars - Excellent - ...a hard, unfaltering attack and furiously intense, extended improvisations that bordered on free-jazz. BALLADS was a timely reminder of the tenor saxophonist's matchless lyricism and exquisite tone... Q (10/01/1995) 4 Stars - Very Good - ...BALLADS...has always been about the celebration of pitch and melody. The band...hadn't played any of the tunes prior, but its proficiency leaned toward perfection. Down Beat (11/01/1995)

"John Coltrane, Blue Train MFSL Sealed Gold CD - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"

Blue Train [Gold Disc] - J-Card Track listing 1. Blue Train 2. Moment's Notice 3. Locomotion 4. I'm Old Fashioned 5. Lazy Bird Details Playing time: 42 min. Contributing artists: Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew, Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones Producer: Alfred Lion Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: AAD Album notes Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Kenny Drew (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on September 15, 1957. Originally released on Blue Note (81577). Includes liner notes by Robert Levin and Bob Blumenthal. With 1957's BLUE TRAIN, John Coltrane not only firmly established his own voice on the tenor saxophone, but also proved his abilities as a bandleader and composer. The musicians on BLUE TRAIN, hand-picked by Coltrane himself, play superbly, not only as individuals, but also as a cohesive unit--a rare occurence in an era where "all-star" ensembles would come together for one session, then disband just as quickly. Nineteen-year-old trumpeter Lee Morgan spins bop lines in a warm tone, belying his age with his extraordinary playing, while drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Paul Chambers keep BLUE TRAIN running with impressive agility. Two of Coltrane's compositions here, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird," contain the seeds of harmonic exploration to be found in his later work. At this stage of his career, Trane was still occupied with blowing over increasingly challenging chord changes. His unique tone could be warm and sweet or sharp and insistent, but is always amazingly expressive. Throughout this revered album, Coltrane packs more emotion into one phrase than most arists are capable of in a whole tune.

"John Coltrane, Giant Steps - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"

JOHN COLTRANE - GIANT STEPS - This MFSL 24-Karat Gold SEALED WITH J-CARD CD is a piece of musical audiophile history of this classic recording. Released in January 1960, John Coltrane's first album devoted entirely to his own compositions confirmed his towering command of tenor saxophone and his emerging power as a composer. Apprenticeships with Dizzy, Miles, and Monk had helped focus his furious, expansive solos, and his stamina and underlying sense of harmonic adventure brought Coltrane, at 33, to a new cusp--the polytonal "sheets of sound" that distinguished his marathon solos were offset by interludes of subtle, concise lyricism, embodied here in the tender "Naima." That classic ballad is a calm refuge from the ecstatic, high-speed runs that spark the set's up-tempo climaxes, which begin with the opening title song, itself a cornerstone of modern jazz composition. This exemplary reissue benefits from eight alternate takes of the original album's seven stellar tracks, excellent re-mastering of the original tapes, and an expanded annotation. -- Tracks include: Giant Steps 2. Cousin Mary 3. Countdown 4. Spiral 5. Syeeda's Song Flute 6. Naima 7. Mr. P.C. 8. Giant Steps [Alternate Take] 9. Naima [Alternate Take] 10. Cousin Mary [Alternate Take] 11. Recorded at Russian Hill Recording Studios, San Francisco; the Plant, Sausalito, California; Leon Heywood Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by John Bitzer. When popular culture embraced John Lee, purists turned up their noses. They should have been pleased that the world's greatest living Delta bluesman was going to make some money before he turned up his toes. Teaming up with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Canned Heat (not for the first time) and others, lent Hooker's blues a contemporary gloss. It took the album to the upper reaches of the album charts around the world, brought him a number of Grammy awards and a new career in advertising. The blues is not only a healer, it drinks brandy and wears jeans. The Santana guitar solo on the title track is breathtaking and Hooker is the coolest senior citizen in the world.

"John Lennon, Double Fantasy - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"

MFSL 24K GOLD CD. Strange as it seems now, the last album Lennon released in his lifetime was intended as a comeback, or rather as a parting wave at retirement. "Watching the Wheels" and "Beautiful Boy" celebrate the joys he found outside of The Beatles, and "(Just Like) Starting Over" is about rejoining the pop world - Lennon rarely sounded happier.
