Perhaps one of the greatest British song writers, poets and man about style to never get truly discovered in the states. These two albums have some different styles and sounds but thats what made the Jam soooo good. Just about every song on these is great. "Thats Entertainment" has been copied by a few artists but the original on Sound Affects is heads above the others. Sandwiched between them was KINKS-SIZED and, amazingly, all three were released in one furious year, 1965. The band started out under the spell of the same bluesy American rock & roll that fueled both the Merseybeat bands as well as their grittier counterparts (most notably the Rolling Stones). However, mixed in with the Chuck Berry covers were some astoundingly confident originals by Ray Davies--from "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of the Night" to the softer approaches broached on "Something Better Beginning," "Don't Ever Change" and "So Long." And if that weren't enough, younger brother Dave Davies' big fisted guitar chords worked in tandem with the rhythm section of Pete Quaife and Mick Avory, making The Kinks one of the finest rock & roll bands to jump out of any decade. Instead of casting aspersions on socio-political ills, Townshend was casting glances askance at current musical trends ("Sister Disco") and his own occupation ("Guitar and Pen"). Entwistle's bass still rumbles melodically through the tunes in the grand style, and Daltrey's wounded-beast roar is at its most impassioned on such songs as "Had Enough." The end of an era was just around the corner, but the band blazed away regardless, making WHO ARE YOU the last must-have Who album.

While both THE WHO SELL OUT and TOMMY have their passionate devotees, WHO'S NEXT is the Who's masterpiece. Originally, Pete Townshend intended these songs for an even larger-scale project than TOMMY, a massive multimedia extravaganza called LIFEHOUSE that the songwriter eventually abandoned. Townshend was initially keen to keep at least the basic structure of the story for the Who's next record, but associate producer Glyn Johns convinced him that a straightforward single disc of the project's best songs would make a stronger album. Wise counsel indeed, because WHO'S NEXT is by far the group's most focused and powerful effort. Bracketed by "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," two classic rock epics that did more to advance the cause of synthesizers in mainstream rock than Kraftwerk's entire career, this album is basically flawless, ranging in mood from the heartbreaking "The Song Is Over" to John Entwistle's bitterly funny "My Wife." Monk with his quartet appeared for two nights at the Monterey Jazz festival in September of 1963. VOLUME ONE is culled from both of those nights and features three of his originals along with "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" (which marvelously shows Monk's ability to take a gorgeous and familiar melody and make it completely his own). After the '50s Monk's writing was slowing down and he was revisiting his increasingly praised work from the previous two decades. The quartet he kept throughout '60s are perfectly meshed with that work, playing their instruments as if they're each an extension of Monk's heart and mind. Thelonious Monk's appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival was a turning point of sorts in his career, and from that point on he was a major draw at various jazz festivals. Opening with Monk's own "Light Blue," the quartet also visits "Criss Cross," "Epistrophy," and "Bright Mississippi." Along with the standard "Sweet And Lovely," this set offers everything that was magical about this quartet and that makes this music absolutely timeless and hard to label as anything other than "Monk's music." This music is richly human, embracing a full emotional spectrum from warmly comical to melancholy.

"Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything"MFSL 24K GOLD CD This 1972 Release, originally on Bearsville Records, was engineered by Todd Rundgren with a little help from his friends, Rick Derringer, Billy Mundi, Moogy Klingman, Amos Garrett, Busy Maugh and Gene Dinewiddie (both from the Butterfield Blues Band), the Hunt Brothers (Soupy's boys from Tin Machine), Rick Vito, Jim Horn and the Brecker Brothers. The Set contains many selections that have survived the decades, from radio perennial "Hello, It's Me" and "I Saw The Light" to a most recent cover of "Slut" by the latest version of Alex Chilton's Big Star. No "Sweeter Memories" will leave you more "Breathless" than the 25 song Rundgren classic. When I first listened to this Collection, "I Saw the Light" in fact "Little Red Lights" when "I Went to the Mirror" and saw the image of "Wolf Man Jack." "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" but the "Dust in the Wind" was "One More Day" before "The Night the Carousel Burned Down" and you left me in the "Cold Morning Light."
