"Getz/Gilberto - MFSL Gold CD"GETZ/GILBERTO - MFSL Factory Sealed Gold CD Two names spring to mind upon hearing the words jazz and samba , namely those of Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. But really one should be thinking of Antonio Carlos Jobim, who, with his composition from 1958 Chega de saudade, first created the type of Brazilian samba that is known today as bossa nova. It was with one of Jobim's songs, Desafinado, that the bossa nova began its triumphant conquest of the USA. In 1962, Stan Getz made the work widely known when he recorded the number, together with Charlie Byrd, on his album Jazz Samba. It was this recording, along with Focus (1961), which was responsible for Getz's definitive comeback in the USA at that same time. Jazz Samba opened the floodgates to a new musical vogue, and although cool jazz had been swept aside by hard bop, the reserved and melancholy touch of Getz's style once again became all the rage. It is really not at all surprising, therefore, that the album Getz/Gilberto, recorded in March 1963 for the Verve label, was a winner right from the very start, bringing together as it did the two godfathers of samba Jobim and Gilberto with their American brother Getz. This music is like a pleasantly warm bath whose water is perfumed with essential oil, or like a mild summer night bathed in golden moonlight. The songs, all of them now classics in their own right, are filled with the joy of life, peace and harmony. Track listing 1. Girl From Ipanema, The 2. Para Machucar Meu Coracao 3. Doralice 4. Corcovado 5. Desafinado 6. So Danco Samba 7. O Grande Amor 8. Vivo Sohando Details Contributing artists: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto Producer: Creed Taylor Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Mixed SPAR Code: n/a Album notes The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat. Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, and the gentle, minimal arrangements and production ensure that GETZ/GILBERTO will never date, age, or tire. It's a perfect album. Editorial reviews ...essential for all serious jazz collections...served as proof that it is possible for music to be both artistically and commercially successful...this relatively sparse setting with the great Getz perfectly fit the music, resulting in a true gem... JazzTimes (11/01/1994) 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) - ...[the] 20-bit digital remastering...gives the breezy Brazilian lilt added warmth... Recorded at Rumbo Studios, Canoga Park, California; Take One Studio, Burbank, California; Can Am Studio, Tarzana, California. Already a legend in its own meagre lifetime, this startling debut shrouded itself in controversy, from its original Robert Williams artwork to Axl Rose's unblinking accounts of LA's underbelly. This mawkish storytelling, combined with a brattish collective swagger and a surprisingly mature approach to their songs, guaranteed Guns N' Roses a speedy notoriety that was to serve their legend brilliantly. From the laconic "Paradise City" to the achingly beautiful "Sweet Child O' Mine," or the furious "Welcome To The Jungle," the record brims with a brutal integrity. An album they could never surpass even if they had stayed together. SKU Number: * |

Four years after becoming an uninvited guest at the party that is the music industry with its seminal debut, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, Guns N' Roses released USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II. Thanks to a reckless approach toward life and music, G N' R was constantly at the center of controversy and the result was that much of it was chronicled on this two-volume project. By this time, original drummer Steven Adler had been dismissed due to alleged drug dependency problems and was replaced by the Cult's Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed was also added as a member. ILLUSION I found Axl Rose ranting on songs about being sued by a neighbor ("Right Next Door to Hell"), dysfunctional relationships ("Back off Bitch"), and a drug overdose ("Coma"). Amid all the spewed bile, G N' R scored three Top 40 hits with a Wings cover ("Live and Let Die"), a piano-driven, Elton John-flavored epic ("November Rain"), and a hard-edged ballad ("Don't Cry"). Celebrity cameos include a then unknown Shannon Hoon, Hanoi Rocks' Mike Monroe, and Alice Cooper, who makes a particularly sinister contribution to "The Garden." Editorial reviews Finally, the baddest boys in rock are back on record--and nearly as confused, abused, defensive and defiant as ever. New York Times (09/15/1991) SKU Number: * |

ILLUSION II lacks the hits of the first volume and also doesn't overflow with as much bile, aside from a couple of exceptions. "Harry Nilsson, Nillson Schmillson - CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK"MFSL 24K Gold CD, Japan 1st Generation Ultradisc Pressing The late Harry Nilsson's creative and commercial peak, this LP showcases the singer/songwriter's lighthearted worldview to best advantage. It remains one of the best, most consistent, and least dated albums from an early-'70s era not known for underplayed, unpretentious subtlety. Here you get strong interpretive singing (how ironic that this tunesmith's biggest hits were covers, such as Badfinger's "Without You"), inventive arranging (the hilarious, marble-mouthed "Coconut"), and distinctive melodicism (check out that lovely paean to the stars, "The Moonbeam Song"). In keeping with the domesticated figure on the cover--complete with housecoat, cigarette, and waiting refrigerator--the mood is laidback and homey, Nilsson's multi-octave voice was never so full of life, and there's a palpable feeling of comfort in both the production and the material. Other LPs (like the John Lennon-produced Pussy Cats and the essential Nilsson Sings Newman) have their moments, but this is where to begin any Nilsson collection. SKU Number: UDCD 541 |

"Herbie Hancock, Man-Child - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"Factory Sealed MFSL 24K GOLD CD with J-Card. Released in 1975, Man-Child was a Top 40 hit for Herbie Hancock which includes an amazing round up of talented musicians like Wayne Shorter and Stevie Wonder. Man-Child is another strong electronic jazz-funk album from Herbie Hancock The opening track "Hang Up Your Hang Ups" with its snappy horn lines and funky guitar is easily the best track here. Herbie has a great solo near the end of the track as well. "The Traitor", with its funky bass line, and "Heartbeat", which has a great hook and more great playing from Herbie, are great as well. "Steppin' In It" is a cool little jam featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica. . A solid album. It's worth checking out just for "Hang Up Your Hang Ups", one of the best from his funk era. "Howlin' Wolf, Real Folks Blues"MFSL 24K GOLD CD. REAL FOLK BLUES is an anthology of sides cut by Howlin' Wolf for Chess Records between 1956 and 1963. Often imitated by such immortals as Jimi Hendrix doing KILLING FLOOR, Canned Heat covering LOUISE, Cream covering SITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD, Yardbirds covering SMOKESTACK LIGHTNING, but never duplicated Howlin' Wolf fused the positive energy of traditional country blues with the overamped explosiveness of modern electric blues. Contributors on this Album include Willie Dixon and Buddy Guy. Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California and The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California. After two mildly successful, vaguely new-wave albums, Bay Area bar band Huey Lewis and the News (several of whose members had backed Elvis Costello on MY AIM IS TRUE) hooked up with mega-selling producer Mike Chapman and released 1983's SPORTS. The album dominated both AM and FM radio throughout 1984, aligning it with THRILLER, PURPLE RAIN, SHE'S SO UNUSUAL, and Madonna's early singles as definitive pop music of its era. SPORTS is genial frat-boy rock at its finest. Singles "The Heart of Rock and Roll," "Heart and Soul," "I Want a New Drug," and "If This is It" comprise half of the album, and these songs have stood up to repeated listens. Hearing SPORTS today, the album still sounds surprisingly fresh, all the more remarkable when one considers how poorly other hits of the day have fared. SKU Number: UDCD 509 |

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - (single version) Details Playing time: 58 min. Distributor: n/a Recording type: Mixed Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: AAD Album notes Iron Butterfly was the American answer to the heavy riff-rock of British groups like Cream and Led Zeppelin, with a touch of Vanilla Fudge's organ-led theatricality and the Doors' mysterioso image. They will forever more be known for the 17-minute title track of this, their second album. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (a poke at singer/organist Doug Ingle's gruff, John Kay-like delivery of "In the Garden of Eden") is built around one of the most memorable riffs of the '60s. It's filled out by long solos from all concerned, especially from drummer Ron Bushy, whose lengthy extemporizing provided the template for Big Rock Drum Solos for decades to come. The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; "Flowers and Beads" in particular is simultaneously a romantic '60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture. Oxygene VI Details Producer: Jean-Michel Jarre Distributor: n/a Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Solo performer: Jean-Michel Jarre (sythesizer, Farfisa organ, Mellotron). Recorded from August to November 1976. Released in 1976, OXYGENE proved to be a massive hit for French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The son of film composer Maurice Jarre, the synthesizer player sought to create warmer sonic textures through the technology of the time, and the result was this pioneering six-part album. OXYGENE's bizarrely creepy cover, featuring a skull underneath the peeled-away surface of the globe, belies the music's lush beauty, though it does point to haunting moments such as "Oxygene III." The record's most recognizable track is the majestic "Oxygene IV," which features percolating synth lines and spare, nearly imperceptible beats. While the album would lead Jarre to international fame, especially in his native France and the rest of Europe, it also proved to be a recording that he struggled to top, even going so far as to release a sequel, OXYGENE 7-13, more than 20 years later. For aficionados of late-'70s electronic acts such as Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, this bold outing is essential. SKU Number: UDCD 613 |

"Jeff Beck, Blow by Blow - Factory Sealed MFSL Gold CD"MFSL 24K GOLD CD. His guitar-slinging contributions to the Yardbirds having dwarfed those of Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Mr. Beck's bad boy spent the next several years playing blues-rock (the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart), soul-rock (the second edition of that band), and leading a power trio. Then, he made this all-instrumental album, which was a huge 1975 success. Produced by George Martin, the nine-song session finds Beck fronting a keyboards-bass-drums outfit, augmented by some tastefully unobtrusive string arrangements. Powerful jazz-rock fusion with a touch of funk, WIRED is Beck's follow-up to the popular BLOW BY BLOW. Hunting Girl 5. Ring Out, Solstice Bells 6. Velvet Green 7. Whistler, The 8. Pibroch (Cap in Hand) 9. Fire at Midnight Album notes Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, flute, whistles); Martin Barre (electric guitar, lute); John Evans, David Palmer (keyboards); Barriemore Barlow (marimba, glockenspiel, drums, bells, nakers, tabor); John Glascock (bass, background vocals). In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing combination of art-rock and British folk-rock. Elaborate synthesizer fanfares mix with delicate acoustic guitar tapestries, complex arrangements and odd time signatures. SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of THICK AS A BRICK, the storytelling style of AQUALUNG and the courtly, medieval air of MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY. Editorial reviews 4 stars out of 5 - ...There's no doubting the band's ability to combine awesomely complex time signatures and effete fife-tabor-mandolin-and-bells effects while rocking out... People often forget that Tull started out as a forward-looking blues-rock unit not dissimilar to contemporaries like Cream and Led Zeppelin. While the blues influence is heard most clearly on the debut THIS WAS, its successor STAND UP still shows some of those traces. Tracks like "A New Day Yesterday" and "Nothing Is Easy" are the prime examples of this hard-hitting, bluesy riff-rock approach. Elsewhere, though, the boys begin to show some of the folk, jazz, and classical influences that would soon make them a leading exponent of progressive rock. "Bouree" is a flute-led instrumental track that combines Ian Anderson's improvisations with melodic bass work that's alternately jazzy and classical-influenced. The melancholy folk-rock feel of "Look Into the Sun" makes for an emotionally affecting, introspective ballad. The light-hearted "Fat Man" incorporates folk influences with an Eastern-sounding balalaika melody. STAND UP is a portrait of a band in transition, on its way to bigger things, but it's still eminently enjoyable. SKU Number: * |
