Thus, the anticipation level was high when rumors of his impending solo album began to circulate at the tail end of the '80s. Rather than release a thowback retro effort to satiate the hearts of fans thirsting after The Band's brand of backwoods roots rock, Robertson stepped firmly into the present day. With the help of producer Daniel Lanios, the album is enveloped with modern textures. Robertson admirably handles the bulk of the vocal chores (keep in mind that he rarely sang a note with the Band). Nonetheless, numerous artists are drawn into the fold to beef up Robertson's effective, but limited, vocal abilities. Peter Gabriel helps transform the beautiful "Fallen Angel" (a moving eulogy to deceased Band member Richard Manuel) into a bona fide hymn that does justice to Manuel's memory. Bono injects heat into the "Sweet Fire of Love" while Robertson growls like a man who's somehow found an extra reserve of energy to lay his claim, once again, as one of the premiere talents of his generation. Sting's double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis's arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"). The songs are a generally varied lot, ranging from a tribute to victims of repression in Argentina ("They Dance Alone") to a tongue-in-cheek, sort-of-reggae tribute to famous eccentric Quentin Crisp ("An Englishman in New York"). The sort-of-funk "We'll Be Together"(originally written for a Japanese beer commercial) is the most upbeat and pop-ish thing here, and was deservedly a hit single, although Sting now disdains it.

By the early 1970s, rock & roll had been around long enough to begin to examine its own past. In the States, this resulted in Sha Na Na, but in Great Britain, where the popular culture of the young was more complex and coded, the Who's QUADROPHENIA was the most powerful example of this nostalgic view. Reviews at the time focused primarily on the obscure psychological aspect of the story--supposedly, the four sides of the original double-album set are meant to examine the four sides of the main character's personality, each one represented by a different member of the Who. However, the most interesting aspect of QUADROPHENIA is its seamy but poetic depiction of London's early-'60s Mod subculture, from which the Who originally sprang. Set during the weekend of a climactic seaside gang fight between the Mods and their archenemies the Rockers, Townshend's story follows Jimmy, the archetypal Mod. The impressionistic songs tell an elliptical tale, but also function on their own as vintage '70s Who at their hard-rock height--the sneering "The Punk and the Godfather," the driving "5:15" and the anthemic, redemptive closer "Love, Reign O'er Me" are among Townshend's finest work. Thelonious Monk's appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival was a turning point of sorts in his career, and from that point on he was a major draw at various jazz festivals. Monk with his quartet appeared for two nights at the Monterey Jazz festival in September of 1963. VOLUME ONE is culled from both of those nights and features three of his originals along with "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" (which marvelously shows Monk's ability to take a gorgeous and familiar melody and make it completely his own). After the '50s Monk's writing was slowing down and he was revisiting his increasingly praised work from the previous two decades. The quartet he kept throughout '60s are perfectly meshed with that work, playing their instruments as if they're each an extension of Monk's heart and mind.
